The company claims to have produced the most advanced robotics “comprehensive, integrated” platform geared towards robotics. The company appears to have out done offerings by rival chip firms Nvidia, & Intel by developing – true to form – a smaller device, with better connectivity capabilities.

As the name suggests, the platform is aimed at being the heart of the next generation of machines; autonomous devices that relay information back to the operator, in real time. Qualcomm have done a ton of work – in the past four years – to gain as much robotics industry recognition as possible, with Dev Singh as the Senior Director of Business Development & and GM of Robotics, UAVs & Intelligent Machines at Qualcomm.

Technical Specs

The Qualcomm Robotics RB5 platform became available in June of this year, as an improvement on their previous robotics chip; the RB3. The QRB5165 processor is what powers the RB5, integrating an Octa Core Qualcomm Kryo 858 Central Processing Unit, the in-house produced Adreno 650 GPU, along with multiple compute, audio, and sensor DSP’s. The System also comes packed with Qualcomm’s Hexagon Tensor Accelerator.

The RB5 platform is equipped to support up to 7 cameras, all working simultaneously. The platform is good for indoor and outdoor lighting, allowing for simultaneous localization and mapping, autonomous navigation and the identification of objects, among other functions, an autonomous unit would need to perform.

Qualcomm, who spend over $5 billion a year on research and development, have clearly barred no holds in the design of the RB5. The firm has stuck their 5th generation patented AI engine into the platform, which delivers 15 Terra Operations per second (the previous platform only delivered 3 TOP’s), enabling machines to run heavy AI and Deep Learning processes. With 4G, as well as 5G connectivity enabled, the RB5 could easily help usher in a new wave of IOT oriented machines.

Alan Turing, inventor of the first basic computer, once posited that a machine could only truly be intelligent when it can’t be distinguished from a human. Owing to recent developments in AI, that moment could be at hand. Now, we are beginning to wonder whether or not an artificial intelligence could develop self awareness, a consciousness, so to speak.

If machines can outthink humans, then machines could think, plan, frame purposes for decisions, offer insight based on experience and memory in conversations, and have relationships. An interesting theory, but is it possible?

With enough advancement in neuroscience and our understanding of the human brain, one could simulate the functions of the human brain. It is important, however, to remember that even if one maps out the entire human brain and creates a digital simulation of its inner workings, one cannot reproduce the brain itself. A series of ones and zeros does not, a mind, make.

There are two schools of thought on the matter, some experts in the field believe it is only a matter of mapping the brain and understanding the function of neural networks, then developing a digital simulation.

Experts believe that AI in its current form, cannot achieve the functions of the mind, that is to have a subject perspective and be self aware. They term it ‘Weak AI’ and reckon it would take a ‘Strong AI’ to achieve true consciousness. Current AI could simulate and probably outperform the computational functions of the brain, calculation and pattern recognition, but not have a personal opinion.

So an AI instigated apocalypse may not be on the cards for humanity as Elon Musk and Steven Hawking have warned. Instead humanity stands to have AI complement and augment how we interact with the world around us and govern our lives. What Is Deep Learning?

Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that dates as far back as the 1950s. How Does It Work?

Deep learning algorithms are trained on one data set and then taking what the program has learned and applied it to another set of data. This makes deep learning agents better suited to tasks like identifying images and audio.

Though photo manipulation has been around since the 19th century, the introduction and rapid advancement of digital video technology – would in turn – fuel the development of video manipulation.

So What Exactly Are DeepFakes?

DeepFake videos are -as they have come to be known in their more sinister form- are very well crafted, fake, videos of people saying and/or doing things that are uncharacteristic or would otherwise discredit them. In most instances, these DeepFakes have shown up in the form of celebrities (mostly female) in pornographic videos. However, manipulated videos of politicians have also surfaced.

According to AI firm Deeptrace, there were no less than 15 000 DeepFakes circulating the internet by September 2019. This number represents a near two fold increase over a nine month period.

How Do They Work?

DeepFakes use a form of machine learning known as deep learning to produce astonishingly believable images, sounds and videos of events that never happened.

The first step is to feed a great number of images of people through an AI algorithm known as an encoder. The encoder will then filter through the images to pinpoint and learn the physical similarities and differences between two people, to break them down to only their common features.

The next step involves the use of another AI algorithm called a decoder. This AI is used to recover the now broken down and compressed images from the first AI. This AI is also fed data on the two individuals’ faces in order to complete its task. Due to the fact that more than one individual’s face was used, two decoders would have to be used. One specifically trained for each individual.

To superimpose one subject’s face over the other’s, you simply run the encoded images through the opposite decoder. And that is how the most basic DeepFakes are made.

The more advanced and harder to spot DeepFake videos use a GAN (Generative Adversarial Network). This works by putting two algorithms up against each other. The first is the generator, which is trained to create a synthetic image of whoever is being faked. The second is the discriminator, which is trained to scrutinise images made by the generator. This process is then repeated until the generator produces realistic copies.

How Is This a Danger?
