Today, the smartphone is an integral part of the lives of many people around the world. We are at the start of a technological revolution. The revolution so rapid in advancement and a universal adoption that nothing like it has ever been seen on the face of this earth.
Mobile technology is the worlds fastest growing industry after all, but with growth this fast – question must be asked: „Are things starting to get a bit stagnant?“ I actually think the smartphone industry is just getting warmed up and many innovations await us. So, the big question is where is this all going? And what is there in store for the future?
First Generation of foldable phones
I remember in early 2010. when people were talking about the flexible phones that can change their shape depending on what you want to use it for. Although it is nice to dream, the reality is – a phone is one of the most complex mass-produced consumer products in history. A typical phone includes highly integrated circuits, a wide array of sensors and processors and not to mention a battery that would explode if you were to puncture it. For a phone that changes shape to happen, the manufacturing methods of the internals would have to be radically and fundamentally changed – until then – the truly free form phone is still applied dream. That being said, Samsung has revealed their first foldable phone – Samsung Fold. Several reviewers of the device reported the phone screen is breaking and for those reasons Samsung had to postpone the launch of the device.
Future is already here. Seeing a folding phone from a distance is a flash of confusion, a cognitive dissonance. Just doesn’t seem possible that a screen can do that and while holding it in your own hands should convince you that it’s a reality, it’s somehow just easier to believe that your senses are lying to you. But it is happening, foldable phones are real, and if the mobile industry is going this direction – it will change smartphones as we know them.
When you get a foldable phone, you actually get 2. devices merged into one. You have a one-handed smartphone and a two-handed tablet bundled into one mobile device.
Zero Bezel Phones
This is easy to imagine. We’ve all thought about it and that is zero bezel phones. So, the most recent phones come out with the very thin bezels but there are bezels. They are there. In probably a few years from now, I think we’ll be starting to see phones that do not have bezels at all, they are all just screened and that should be pretty cool. Samsung is working on technology where they will put the speaker on the glass.
Weeks-Long Battery Life
Future phones will have amazing battery life by today’s standards. You know it is going to happen, but probably not in any time soon, I think it is going to be a new generation of battery. I also think the future phones won’t have power outlets at all – all because of wireless charging technology that is already taking over.
