Director Eli Roth says the Borderlands movie "belonged to nobody," blaming a risk-averse studio and a family-friendly push for a $110M film that made $33M.

The Borderlands movie is back in the conversation for all the wrong reasons, and this time it’s the director doing the talking. Eli Roth, the horror filmmaker behind Hostel and Cabin Fever, has offered a blunt post-mortem on the 2024 adaptation, admitting it never found an identity. “You got something that belonged to nobody,” he said — a rare bit of candor about a project that cost a fortune and pleased almost no one. For anyone who studies how game franchises make the leap to the screen, it’s a case study in what goes wrong when a bold property gets sanded down.

A $110 Million Swing That Missed

The numbers tell the story fast. The Borderlands film carried a budget somewhere between $110 and $120 million and pulled in roughly $33 million at the box office — the kind of gap that ends careers and franchises. It arrived to brutal reviews and thin crowds, an outcome all the more surprising given the source material’s chaotic, blood-soaked charm and a stacked cast. When a movie costs nine figures and earns back a fraction of it, the autopsy tends to be long and public, and Roth seems ready to give one.

When ‘Appeal to Everybody’ Means Nobody

Roth’s core complaint is a familiar one in adaptation land: the film tried to please everyone and connected with no one. He describes a Borderlands built for gamers that couldn’t deliver the violence those gamers wanted, because studio pressure toward a family-friendlier rating clipped its wings. “It’s not a kids’ movie, but it’s trying to appeal to everybody,” he explained. His bigger point cuts deeper — as budgets balloon, studios grow more risk-averse, and a punk-rock property gets steadily less punk. That instinct to de-risk a $120 million bet is exactly how you end up with something that belongs to nobody.

The Video Game Movie Curse Isn’t Dead Yet

Borderlands’ faceplant matters because the industry had convinced itself the game-to-film curse was broken. Recent hits proved adaptations can work — but only when they commit to a clear tone instead of chasing the widest possible audience. That’s the tension every studio now faces, and it’s why upcoming swings like Zach Cregger’s horror-forward Resident Evil and Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40K series are worth watching. The winners keep picking a lane; Borderlands, by Roth’s own account, never did.

Roth’s honesty is refreshing, and it doubles as free advice for the next filmmaker handed a beloved game IP: protect the vision, or watch it dissolve into something no one asked for. The movie may have belonged to nobody, but the lesson belongs to everybody making the next one.

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil trailer reveals a bloody, darkly funny reboot aiming to finally break gaming's long-running movie curse.

The full trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil dropped this week, and it looks like the studio finally hired the right person for the job. Cregger built his reputation on Barbarian and Weapons, two of the smartest, most unsettling horror movies of the last few years. Now the studio is handing him one of gaming’s biggest horror franchises, and the footage suggests he is not softening his style one bit. For an industry that has spent two decades watching game-to-movie projects flop, that is a genuinely interesting bet.

The new footage centers on a medical courier named Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, who gets sent into a Raccoon City hospital just as a viral outbreak turns the building into a slaughterhouse. A cast of Umbrella scientists rounds things out, clearly knowing more than they are letting on. It is dirty, claustrophobic, and mean in the way Cregger’s other films are mean, with jolts of pitch-black humor cutting through the dread. The film is reportedly shot for IMAX and slated for a fall 2026 release, which tells you the studio is not treating this as a discount horror project.

A Trailer That Leans Into Dread Instead of Fan Service

What stands out about this trailer is what it does not do. There is no wink at the camera, no rapid-fire nod to every fan-favorite monster from the games. Instead, Cregger builds tension the way he did in Barbarian: slow reveals, disorienting hallway geometry, and characters who make the wrong call at exactly the wrong moment. The hospital setting also does real work. It swaps the franchise’s familiar Umbrella labs and zombie-choked streets for a more grounded, procedural nightmare, where an ordinary delivery job spirals into a fight for survival.

The darkly comedic edge matters too. Cregger has built a career on horror that makes audiences laugh right before it makes them scream, and that balance is visible in the trailer’s editing. It is a tone that has worked for him twice already, and it is a smarter fit for Resident Evil than pure grim seriousness. The games themselves have always had a streak of campy self-awareness buried inside the terror, and this trailer seems to understand that better than most of its predecessors did.

Resident Evil’s Long, Bumpy Road Through Hollywood

Game-to-movie adaptations have one of the worst track records in the industry, and Resident Evil is a case study in why. The Paul W.S. Anderson series that ran from 2002 to 2016 turned into a major commercial success across six films, but critics largely tore it apart for straying from the source material and leaning on action-movie clichés instead of survival horror. A 2021 attempt to reboot the franchise closer to the games, Welcome to Raccoon City, fizzled with critics and at the box office alike, proving that fan-service faithfulness alone does not guarantee a good movie either.

That history is the backdrop every studio executive is thinking about when a new game adaptation gets greenlit. For years, the genre’s reputation was so shaky that talented directors avoided it entirely. It took recent hits built around genuine directorial vision — the same instinct that made a series like Arcane click — to prove the format could work. Cregger’s Resident Evil is the latest test of that theory, and arguably the highest-stakes one yet given the franchise’s size and its messy cinematic history.

Why the Studio Bet a Bigger Budget on an Auteur Instead of a Formula

The business story here is as interesting as the horror story. Resident Evil had long lived at a genre label built for smaller, cheaper productions. This time the project moved to a flagship banner, unlocking a larger budget after a reported bidding war among major studios. Console-side production muscle is behind it too, putting the platform holder directly behind its own franchise on the big screen for the first time.

That is a meaningful signal. Studios do not hand a bigger budget and a flagship label to a filmmaker just because he is popular. They do it because Barbarian and Weapons proved Cregger can deliver original, critically respected horror that also performs at the box office. Betting on a proven auteur, rather than chasing a formula or overcorrecting toward strict game accuracy, is the studio’s answer to a franchise that has struggled to satisfy both critics and fans in the same movie. If it works, expect every studio sitting on a dormant game IP to start calling horror directors instead of action journeymen.

Resident Evil Village: Winters’ Expansion Review

The trailer alone will not settle whether Cregger cracks the code that has eluded Resident Evil for over twenty years, but it is the most promising signal the franchise has sent in a long time. A hospital under siege, a cast built for character work instead of just body count, and a studio willing to spend real money on directorial vision all point toward a movie made with intent rather than obligation. The release date will tell us whether that intent translated into box office results, but for now, the bet looks smart on paper.

Christopher Nolan delivers extraordinary landscapes, brutal spectacle and ambitious mythological filmmaking in The Odyssey.

Warning: This review contains spoilers.

I wanted to love Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Nolan is one of my favourite directors, and there are very few filmmakers left who can turn a cinema release into a genuine global event. The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar and Oppenheimer all show what happens when ambitious ideas, technical innovation and unforgettable performances end up in the same film.

That is exactly why The Odyssey is such a frustrating experience.

This is not an incompetent film. It is not visually ordinary, technically lazy or creatively safe, and Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic is full of breathtaking landscapes, powerful sound design, brutal battle sequences and moments of genuine cinematic scale. But I still did not particularly like it. The craftsmanship is visible in practically every frame, yet the emotional connection is missing — Nolan has built the physical shape of an epic without consistently delivering its soul.

Most critics strongly disagree with me. As of July 19, 2026, The Odyssey holds a 95% critics’ score and a 97% verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Metacritic reports an 89 Metascore — although its user score is a far more divided 5.0 out of 10. That gap reflects my own reaction. I can recognise the achievement without accepting that it is a masterpiece.

For me, the movie contains too many creative misses, and the largest of them is the casting.

The Odyssey — official trailer

Nolan Still Knows How to Create a Cinematic Event

Before getting into what went wrong, it is only fair to acknowledge what works — and visually, The Odyssey is frequently fantastic.

The islands, coastlines, cliffs, caves and endless stretches of sea are photographed with enormous confidence. Nolan understands that the environment cannot simply function as a backdrop here. The sea has to feel like an unpredictable force separating Odysseus from his kingdom, his family and his former identity, and it does. The landscapes often communicate more than the dialogue.

There are moments when the scale becomes genuinely overwhelming. Ships look fragile against open water, men seem insignificant beneath cliffs and storms, and the natural world feels ancient, hostile and completely indifferent to whether Odysseus survives. That side of the movie works beautifully.

Nolan also succeeds in creating the feeling of a story being told rather than simply displayed. The narration, abrupt breaks, voices and transitions occasionally produce an atmosphere closer to ancient theatre or oral storytelling than to a modern blockbuster, and at its best the film feels like a legend being spoken across generations.

I enjoyed the rhythm Nolan was reaching for, too. The movie refuses to rush through every destination like a conventional action film. It wants you to feel the exhaustion, the repetition and the psychological weight of a journey that appears to have no end. The intention is clear and often admirable — the execution is less consistent.

The Pace Works — Until It Does Not

I appreciate deliberate filmmaking, and I do not need every historical epic to move at the speed of a superhero movie. The slower passages give the landscapes and the mythology space to breathe, and Nolan clearly wants the audience to understand that returning home is not just a geographical problem for Odysseus. It is a slow struggle to hold on to his identity after war, loss, temptation and years of uncertainty.

Eventually, though, the pacing becomes uneven. Some conversations run well past their dramatic purpose while several of Odysseus’s most famous adventures feel strangely compressed, and the film spends a lot of time preparing us for emotional moments that never completely arrive. There are scenes that could have been cut without losing anything, sitting right next to parts of the journey that should have felt dangerous and unforgettable but pass in minutes.

Nolan is clearly building the whole movie around the final return to Ithaca. I understand that decision, but the journey cannot exist only to serve the ending — every encounter should change Odysseus and deepen our understanding of the man coming home. Instead, some episodes feel like spectacular stops on an expensive cinematic itinerary. We see that Odysseus has travelled far. We do not always feel what the journey has taken from him.

The Cyclops Sequence Is Almost Perfect

The encounter with Polyphemus is one of the strongest sections of the movie. The cave is dark, oppressive and genuinely frightening, and Nolan uses confinement brilliantly, building tension out of space, sound and uncertainty. For a while the film stops feeling like a celebrity-filled Hollywood production and starts feeling like a primal myth.

The sequence also captures the qualities that should define Odysseus: intelligence, deception, courage and dangerous pride. He does not survive through strength alone — he studies the situation, manipulates his enemy and uses language as a weapon. That is the Odysseus I wanted to see for the entire film.

Unfortunately, the design of the Cyclops itself is a letdown. Polyphemus never has the grotesque, unnatural presence such an iconic creature demands. His face looks designed rather than discovered, and the visual effects never quite match the physical atmosphere Nolan creates inside the cave. The surrounding scene is convincing; the creature at its centre is not. It is one of several moments where Nolan’s practical filmmaking builds something powerful, only for a digital element to weaken it.

The Film’s Biggest Problem Is Its Cast

The cast of The Odyssey is filled with talented actors. That does not mean they are right for these roles.

This is the central problem with the movie. Nolan appears to have assembled a list of major contemporary stars without always asking whether each of them could disappear into the ancient world he was building, and too frequently I stayed aware of the celebrity instead of the character.

I did not see Odysseus — I saw Matt Damon. I did not see Telemachus — I saw Tom Holland. I did not see Athena — I saw Zendaya. That distance between actor and character kept breaking my immersion.

The official ensemble includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Samantha Morton as Circe, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus and Elliot Page as Sinon. I like nearly all of these actors. The problem is not talent — it is credibility, chemistry, physical presence and whether they feel like they belong to the same mythological world. Too many of them do not.

Matt Damon Is Good, but He Is Not a Great Odysseus

Matt Damon clearly committed himself to this role. The physical preparation is visible — he looks weathered, capable and believable as a man who has spent years fighting, travelling and surviving — and he handles the tactical and physical side of the part professionally.

But Odysseus needs more than competence. He is a king, warrior, husband, father, strategist, liar, survivor and deeply flawed hero, brilliant and arrogant, tender and cruel, loyal and unfaithful, carrying the psychological damage of war while remaining dangerous enough to reclaim a kingdom. That contradiction demands extraordinary emotional depth, and while Damon communicates intelligence and exhaustion, I rarely felt the internal storm underneath. The performance is technically accurate without ever becoming emotionally unforgettable.

There were moments when I could not stop seeing Will Hunting wearing ancient Greek armour. That may sound unfair, because Damon is far more versatile than one role, but the familiarity of his screen persona works against him here. Odysseus should feel larger than life while remaining painfully human. Damon gives us the human part; he rarely becomes legendary.

I kept thinking about actors Nolan has directed before. Christian Bale could have brought a darker, more unpredictable intensity, and Matthew McConaughey proved in Interstellar that he can carry enormous emotional pain while staying physically convincing as a leading man. Either might have given the role more danger, desperation and gravity. Damon is not bad — he is simply not the Odysseus this movie required.

Penelope and Telemachus Feel Like a Modern Family Drama

The relationship between Penelope and Telemachus should be the emotional foundation of The Odyssey, because the journey only matters if we believe in the family waiting at the end of it. Unfortunately, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland never convinced me as mother and son.

Their scenes feel strangely hollow. I never sensed the accumulated grief, uncertainty and pressure of a royal family that has survived roughly twenty years without its king. Penelope should be holding a kingdom together while resisting the men trying to replace her husband; Telemachus should be a young prince forced into adulthood in the shadow of a father he barely remembers. That relationship should be full of love, frustration, resentment, fear and desperation. Instead, several scenes play like a contemporary teenage family drama.

Holland is talented, but his energy, expressions and unmistakably modern screen personality make it hard to accept him as an ancient prince slowly growing into authority. Hathaway carries more dramatic weight, yet the chemistry between them never clicks. And because their scenes matter so much to the structure, the weakness bleeds into everything else. The eventual return to Ithaca should land with overwhelming emotional force. It does not. Nolan builds toward the reunion as though it will destroy the audience, but the relationships have not been developed strongly enough to earn it.

Zendaya Does Not Have the Required Gravitas as Athena

Zendaya’s casting as Athena does not work for me — and this has nothing to do with her race.

Athena is the daughter of Zeus, the goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare. She should radiate authority, intelligence and divine distance, and when she enters a scene, mortals should seem smaller around her. Zendaya is talented and charismatic, but she feels too youthful and too contemporary for this interpretation. I never felt I was watching an ancient goddess who understands human conflict from a perspective mortals cannot reach; I felt I was watching a major modern celebrity performing a mythological supporting role.

Athena does not need to shout or physically dominate anyone. Her power should come from control, certainty and the quiet suggestion that she already knows how everything ends. That authority is missing here, and a more mature performer — or simply one capable of projecting greater severity and timelessness — would have strengthened every scene involving the gods. The problem is presence, not ethnicity.

Robert Pattinson Is Entertaining but Not Dangerous Enough

Robert Pattinson is one of the more enjoyable performers in the movie. As Antinous he brings instability, arrogance and a genuinely unpleasant energy to the Ithaca storyline, and he knows how to make the smallest gesture feel uncomfortable. He is never boring.

Still, I expected Antinous to feel more dangerous. He should be an infection inside Odysseus’s home — a man so confident in the king’s absence that he already behaves as if Ithaca belongs to him. Pattinson delivers the entitlement and the cruelty, but not enough political or physical menace. He is interesting rather than terrifying. It remains one of the stronger casting choices, but another actor might have made the threat feel more immediate.

Agamemnon Works Better Than Menelaus

The scenes involving Agamemnon are brutal and visually effective. Even when the character is not shown clearly, there is a physical credibility to him — he looks like he belongs to a world of war, kings and Greek mythology, and those sequences briefly give the film the heavier atmosphere it otherwise lacks.

Jon Bernthal as Menelaus is less convincing. Bernthal is a strong actor with real screen intensity, and he has been excellent in roles built on modern violence and emotional volatility, but I never fully accepted him as the king of Sparta. The performance feels like Jon Bernthal placed inside a historical production rather than a character emerging naturally from it. Again, that is not an attack on his ability — it is a question of fit.

Charlize Theron Is the Best Casting Decision

Charlize Theron as Calypso is easily one of the film’s strongest choices. Calypso has to embody beauty, comfort, temptation, affection and imprisonment all at once — she offers Odysseus an escape from suffering that would cost him his home, his family and his human identity — and Theron has exactly the maturity, beauty and screen authority the character demands.

She can seem compassionate and dangerous in the same breath, and she is entirely believable as someone who could persuade an exhausted traveller to stay on her island and forget the world outside it. Her scenes carry the mythological presence several other sections lack, and even when the writing slows down, Theron herself stays compelling. Honestly, I would probably eat the lotus flower and stay on that island too.

Circe Is Another Missed Opportunity

Samantha Morton plays Circe, the witch-goddess who transforms Odysseus’s men and becomes his lover in Homer’s poem. Morton is a respected performer, but this version of Circe never has enough mystery, danger or seductive power. The encounter should feel transformative — Odysseus is walking into the territory of someone who can change the physical nature of the men around her — yet the sequence feels oddly restrained.

The adaptation also drastically reduces the time Odysseus spends with her. In Homer’s poem he stays for a year; the film moves him along far more quickly, and Calypso is similarly softened and romanticised compared with the original story. Those changes are not automatically wrong, but they strip away some of the moral and emotional complexity of the journey.

John Leguizamo Needed More Age and Weight

John Leguizamo is a good actor, and parts of his Eumaeus work, but I do not think he was the right choice. Eumaeus is defined by endurance and loyalty — a man who stayed faithful to Odysseus while the kingdom crumbled and a new generation grew up without its king. The role needs someone who looks deeply weathered by time.

Leguizamo performs the material well enough, but he never projects the age, patience and accumulated wisdom I imagined. An older performer with a heavier physical and emotional presence could have made Eumaeus feel like a living link between the old Ithaca and the kingdom Odysseus finally returns to. It is another case of a good actor who does not fully fit the role.

Elliot Page Never Convinces as Sinon

Elliot Page plays Sinon, the Greek soldier tied to the Trojan Horse strategy — and my criticism of this casting has nothing to do with Page being transgender. Page simply does not convince me as a Greek warrior.

The role calls for military credibility, cunning and the confidence to walk into an enemy city and manipulate it during the final stage of a brutal war, and I never felt sufficient physical danger or warrior presence in the performance. Page’s recognisably contemporary screen identity makes it even harder to disappear into the period.

This is the same standard I apply to Holland, Zendaya, Damon and everyone else in the ensemble. The question is never whether an actor deserves to be in a major production — it is whether the actor makes us believe the character. In this case, I did not.

Diversity Is Not the Real Issue — Coherent World-Building Is

The ethnically diverse casting will inevitably become one of the most debated parts of this film, so let me be precise about my problem. It is not that people of different races appear in a mythological story. Ancient Mediterranean societies were connected through trade, migration, conquest and slavery, and The Odyssey is mythology, not documentary footage — filmmakers have enormous room for interpretation.

The real issue is visual and cultural coherence. The cast often feels assembled from modern celebrity culture rather than drawn from one believable cinematic civilisation. Nolan presents a deliberately contemporary, ethnically varied ensemble, but the screenplay and the world-building do not always integrate those choices into a unified vision — so the casting strategy itself becomes visible. Instead of disappearing into ancient Greece, I kept noticing the modern production decisions behind it. That is what damages the immersion.

A filmmaker can reinterpret mythology in practically any direction, but the world has to stay internally consistent. The audience needs to believe these characters share a history, a culture and a civilisation. Here, many members of the ensemble look like they belong to different movies.

Troy and 300 Created More Convincing Ancient Worlds

Neither Troy nor 300 is historically accurate. 300 is deliberately exaggerated, stylised and adapted from a graphic novel, while Troy rewrites major parts of Homeric mythology and compresses a decade-long war into something far simpler. Yet both films build internally coherent worlds.

Brad Pitt’s Achilles, Eric Bana’s Hector, Peter O’Toole’s Priam and Sean Bean’s Odysseus all feel physically and dramatically suited to the interpretation Troy created. The cast of 300 commits completely to its heightened visual language — the performances, bodies, costumes, dialogue and cinematography all belong to the same brutal fantasy. Those films understood that historical and mythological cinema lives or dies on screen presence: the performer has to look capable of existing inside the legendary world, even when that world is historically wrong.

Nolan’s production is technically more sophisticated and visually more naturalistic, but his cast rarely achieves the same unity. Prestige and celebrity cannot replace credibility.

Nolan’s Nonlinear Structure Is Faithful in Spirit but Uneven in Practice

One criticism of this film deserves pushback, so let me make it clearly: Homer’s Odyssey is not told in chronological order either. The poem begins in the middle of the story, and Odysseus’s earlier adventures — the Lotus-Eaters, the Cyclops, Circe — are recounted by Odysseus himself to the Phaeacians, with Books 9 to 12 forming one long embedded narrative covering the previous ten years. Nolan’s nonlinear approach makes sense and is faithful to the spirit of Homer.

The problem is not that the movie tells events out of order. The problem is that the reordering does not always create the emotional or dramatic momentum we expect from Nolan. In Memento, The Prestige and Oppenheimer, structure changes how we understand the characters — information arrives exactly when it can transform the meaning of what came before. In The Odyssey, the structure sometimes feels merely decorative. The fragments, narration and time shifts build atmosphere, but they do not consistently deepen the characters, and some sequences end up disconnected from the emotional journey. The structure is intelligent; the dramatic accumulation is weaker.

A Spectacular Production With Too Many Creative Misses

There is no question that The Odyssey should be seen on the biggest screen you can find. The scale, the landscapes, the sound and the physical filmmaking deserve it, and Nolan remains one of the few directors who can make a blockbuster feel handcrafted rather than assembled by committee.

But technical achievement cannot replace emotional conviction. The family relationships do not work. Too many cast members do not fit their roles. The screenplay races through some of the most interesting adventures while stretching scenes that add little emotional weight. The Cyclops sequence is brilliantly staged but undermined by its creature design; Circe lacks danger; Athena lacks authority; Telemachus feels too modern; and Odysseus never fully becomes the legendary king the story demands. The result is a movie I can admire frame by frame while disliking as a complete experience.

Final Verdict: Is The Odyssey Worth Watching?

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is worth seeing for its cinematography, its landscapes, its sound design and its moments of enormous theatrical scale. It is not one of Nolan’s best films.

I understand what he was reaching for — a fusion of Homeric storytelling, ancient theatrical atmosphere, nonlinear structure and modern IMAX spectacle — and there are moments when all of it aligns and the film genuinely becomes epic. But those moments are surrounded by too many mistakes. The cast is full of talented performers who feel wrong for their characters, the emotional relationships cannot carry the weight placed on them, and the screenplay lacks the dramatic depth a story about war, family, identity and twenty years of suffering demands.

Nolan’s greatest films balance technical ambition with human emotion. Interstellar makes cosmic scale intensely personal. The Dark Knight matches every major character with an actor capable of defining the role. The Prestige turns rivalry into psychological destruction. Oppenheimer makes history feel like an immediate moral crisis. The Odyssey gives us the images of an epic without consistently giving us the emotional force of one.

I wanted to watch Odysseus fight desperately to return to Penelope and Telemachus. Too often, I watched Matt Damon trying to carry an ensemble that never became a believable family or civilisation. This is an ambitious, beautiful, technically exceptional film — and a major disappointment.

Final rating: 7/10

A magnificent-looking journey that never fully convinces us why returning home matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey a good movie?

It is technically impressive and visually exceptional, but its casting, uneven pacing and limited emotional depth prevent it from becoming a truly great film.

Is Matt Damon good as Odysseus?

Matt Damon gives a committed and physically convincing performance, but he lacks some of the emotional darkness, authority and mythological presence the character requires.

Is The Odyssey faithful to Homer?

The movie retains the central journey, major characters and nonlinear storytelling approach of Homer’s poem, but it alters, shortens or removes several relationships and episodes.

Who gives the best performance in The Odyssey?

Charlize Theron is one of the strongest casting choices as Calypso. Robert Pattinson is also entertaining as Antinous, although the character could have been more threatening.

Why is this review rated 7 out of 10?

The cinematography, natural scenery, narrative ambition and several major sequences are excellent. However, widespread miscasting, weak family chemistry, inconsistent pacing and limited emotional impact significantly weaken the complete film.

When Mojang initially released Minecraft many years ago, it’s safe to say that no one could have predicted its astounding popularity. Moreover, nobody could have foreseen the eventual development of a Minecraft movie. However, on February 27, 2014, Mojang Studios announced the production of a Minecraft movie, leaving fans of the game eagerly awaiting its release.

It has now been eight long years since that momentous day, and fans are still left wondering about the movie’s status. So, what exactly is happening with the Minecraft movie, and will it ever see the light of day?

Delayed production of the Minecraft Movie

First and foremost, let’s address the significant delay the movie has experienced. Originally, the studio scheduled the movie for release in 2019. However, as we all know, things don’t always go as planned in the world of filmmaking. Movies are notoriously challenging to create, often leading to delays spanning months or, in some cases, even years.

Initially, the Minecraft movie was under the direction of Shawn Levy, renowned for his primary role as the producer of Stranger Things. However, he and his core writing team soon departed from the project. That led to the replacement of Rob McElhenney, the creator of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. With Rob taking the helm, production gained momentum, and the studio even felt confident enough to announce a release year.

Unfortunately, the film encountered a slew of persistent issues. A lot of the Key writers, artists, actors, and producers stepped down and the studio had to replace them. Eventually, Rob McElhenney stepped away from the project, resulting in its indefinite suspension in 2018.

Subsequently, the studio didn’t keep the movie on hold for too long. By 2019, a new team stepped in, and they announced that the film would hit theaters in 2022. Fans across the globe were thrilled, anticipating a bright future for the Minecraft movie. However, as fate would have it, 2020 arrived, bringing with it the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. It wreaked havoc on virtually every industry, including entertainment. Production on nearly every major motion picture ground to a halt, and for a massive project like the Minecraft movie, this delay was almost fatal.

Minecraft movie Storyline

Now, let’s delve into the speculation and rumors surrounding the Minecraft movie’s storyline. The main game, Minecraft, lacks a concrete narrative, presenting both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it offers writers and directors creative freedom, but on the other, it raises concerns about the movie becoming generic and uninspired without source material to guide them.

What we can reasonably expect are the character designs. Alongside the iconic blocky visuals of Minecraft, we are likely to see popular Minecraft skins translated into characters. Minecraft’s hallmark feature is the ability to customize your character’s appearance. Throughout the game’s history, many players have created and shared their own skins.

Most think that the Ender Dragon, the game’s final boss, will play an antagonist role in the movie. Furthermore, we can anticipate appearances by Minecraft’s signature adversaries, such as the Creeper and the Enderman.

Current team working on the movie

As for the current production team, the studio has assembled a full crew to work on the project. Jared Hess, known for directing films like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, is currently the latest director and he took the position in April 2022.

While rumors suggest that Jason Momoa is going to star in the film, there is limited information regarding other voice actors. Nevertheless, many fans have been speculating that several popular Minecraft YouTubers may star as voice actors in the movie. It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened. The same approach happened in the production of Minecraft: Story Mode, a Telltale-produced spinoff game.

Release Date and Final Thoughts

Following over a decade of development and a series of changes in writers and directors, the Minecraft movie has finally received an official release date. According to Deadline, the movie will hit theaters worldwide on April 4, 2025.

Following over a decade of development and a series of changes in writers and directors, the Minecraft movie has finally received an official release date. According to Deadline, the movie is set to hit theaters worldwide on April 4, 2025. This release date is a significant shift from the initial plan, as previously announced by the Minecraft staff, which had slated the movie for a 2022 release.

The journey of the Minecraft movie has been a long and winding one, filled with delays and changes. However, with an official release date now in place for April 4, 2025, fans can finally look forward to seeing their beloved world come to life on the big screen. The anticipation and excitement surrounding the film are sure to continue to build.

The Avatar franchise, created by director James Cameron, has been one of the most highly-anticipated film series since the release of the first movie in 2009. The film broke box office records and won three Academy Awards, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Over a decade later, the franchise has returned with four highly-anticipated sequels.

Background Information

The original Avatar film, set on the fictional planet Pandora, followed a Marine named Jake Sully in a battle between the Na’vi and a mining corporation. The ground-breaking use of motion capture and 3-D technology enabled it to become a box office juggernaut. With the sequels set to continue the story of Jake Sully and his relationship with the Na’vi people, fans are awaiting the return to Pandora.

Development of the Sequels

In the years following the release of the first Avatar film, James Cameron announced his plans for four sequels. The first sequel was planned for release in 2014, but due to the desire to perfect the realistic visuals, the release date was pushed forward multiple times.

Despite the delays- Cameron and his team have been working hard on the sequels. They are taking the time to perfect the technology, to build an even more immersive world for audiences to experience.

Avatar the Way of Water Plot

Avatar: The Way of Water is the second sequel and it came to cinemas in December of 2022. The plot takes place years after the events of the first film. The story still follows Jake Sully. Now he is fully integrated into the Na’vi culture and becomes a leader in their war against the human military. Along with his wife Neytiri and other Navi warriors, Jake fights the humans to protect Pandora’s oceans and the creatures that live within them. They are forced into war when humans attempt to extract a valuable mineral from the ocean floor. The film also further explores Na’vi’s spiritual connection to Pandora and the impact of humans’ actions on the environment.

Avatar 3 Information

The 3rd installment to the Avatar Film series (set to release in December of 2024) will reveal the other 15 Navi populations. Cameron has announced that the fire Navi will be a crucial part of the plot line of Avatar 3. Known as the “ash people”, Director Cameron revealed that the fire Navi wouldn’t be as friendly as the Metkayina. We speculate that there will be a sort of Pandoran War between each clan. This would be a fresh change for the franchise, which could end up bearing very positive feedback from fans.

Possible Plotlines of the Upcoming Avatar Sequels:

One possible plot line is a continuation of the conflict between the humans and the Na’vi, with Jake Sully, caught in the middle. The sequel could explore the political and military tension as the humans and the Na’vi continue to battle for control of the planet’s valuable resources. Meaning it could include further exploration of the corporation’s evil intentions to exploit the resources of Pandora.

Another possible plot line is the exploration of Pandora’s diverse and unique ecology. The sequel could take fans deeper into other rainforests, mountains, and oceans of Pandora, introducing new tribes, and ecosystems.
The upcoming sequels could focus on the sacred Tree of Souls and explore the powerful bond Na’vi have with it. Furthermore, the sequel could showcase the beauty and wonder of Pandora’s natural world and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

Concluding thoughts

Although director James Cameron delayed the release of Avatar sequels for nearly a decade, we got to see how much effort they put into every little detail of the movie. We hope to see this continue into the next set of films in the Avatar franchise.

After being declared as being the biggest hit of 2022 so far, it’s no surprise that The Batman is getting a sequel. Grossing over $752 million, Warner would naturally want to continue Robert Pattinson’s Batman saga. Although not much has been announced about the upcoming sequel, there are a few points worth mentioning.

Warner has a lot to live up to. The first movie was nearly 3 hours long. Filled with intense groundbreaking action scenes and depth of story while looking into the corruption of the dark city of Gotham. It will be hard to one-up The Batman (2022). Adding a sidekick (Robin) would do just that. If that does happen (and it is executed well), there is nothing stopping Robert Pattinson’s Batman from being one of the best. So here is everything we know so far about The Batman (2022)’s sequel.

Possible plot points of The Batman sequel

The Batman (2022) only scratched the surface of the immense corruption that takes place in Gotham city. Therefore it’s safe to assume that we will see an even deeper side to the corruption that Batman has to face. This is a lot different from the other crime-fighting scenarios. Instead of simply defeating the next “bad guy” the hero is met with, he has to fight the messed-up system. Robert Pattinson’s Batman definitely tackles a lot more politics than the other Batmen’s. People don’t seem to hate it as it’s already the highest-grossing movie in 2022.

That being said, surely we’ll see more of the Penguin in the sequel. You would imagine that the sequel would be based around the Joker and the Riddler as the ending of The Batman clearly hinted at it. Sadly, director Matt Reeves announced that the Joker and the Riddler will be explored deeper in the upcoming HBO Max show based on the Arkham-Asylum.

Possible characters

Obviously, Robert Pattinson will be playing Batman in the sequel (hopefully, otherwise it would make it quite strange). More excitingly, it may not be a reach to say that we can hope to see Robin on the screen once again. How else would DC make this Batman stand out from the others? Most other plausible answers are less likely and this type of corruption-fighting requires a trusty sidekick. It’s not confirmed but it seems very possible, maybe DC is finally willing to use their trump card to try and keep up with the previous Batmen sagas.

Closing thoughts

We don’t know any definite facts about the sequel to The Batman (2022). However, we also know some things are more possible than others. Director Reeves said that the sequel will definitely come out in the next 5 years. This may seem like a long time but they promised other content surrounding Gotham.
Section 1:

A criminal gang robs Gotham City Bank and kills each other over money splitting, and eventually, all the money goes to the Joker (Heath Ledger). Batman (Christine Bell), Harvey Dent District Attorney (Aaron Eckhart), and Lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman) form an alliance to rid Gotham City of organized crime.

Bruce Wayne believes that despite Dent as Gotham’s protector, he can retire from being Batman and start a normal life with Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

Sal Maroni, Gamble, and Chechnya, who are leading the criminals, hold a meeting in which Lao, a Chinese accountant who hid the criminals’ money, talks to them via video conference. The Joker enters the meeting and offers to kill Batman in exchange for half the money.

The crowd rejects the offer, and Gamble sets a prize for the Joker. The Joker finds and kills Gamble, and as a result, the leaders of the criminals decide to accept the Joker’s offer.

Section 2:

Batman arrests Lao in Hong Kong and allows Dent to arrest all the criminals. The Joker threatens to kill people unless Batman reveals his true identity and threatens to kill Police Commissioner Jillian B. Loeb (Colin McFarlane) and the judge.

The Joker tries to kill Mayor Anthony Garcia, but Gordon sacrifices himself to stop the assassination. Dent realizes that Rachel is the Joker’s next target. Bruce Wayne decides to reveal his secret identity to prevent further murders, but before he can take action, Dent announces to the Joker that he is Batman.

Gordon arrests the Joker and promotes Dent to Commissar while the Joker kidnaps Dent. Batman saves Dent from the Joker, and Batman returns to save Batman.

Section 3:

Rachel and Dent are escorted home with bodyguards, but Gordon later learns that they have never been home. Batman interrogates the Joker and the Joker tells him that he has imprisoned them in two different places with explosives and that Batman can only save one of them.

Batman goes to rescue Rachel while Gordon tries to save Dent. He enters the building but realizes that the Joker has sent him to Dent. Both buildings explode, Rachel is killed but Dent is only injured and loses half of her face.

The Joker escapes with Lao to take him instead of the money, the Joker burns his share of the money and kills Lao and Chechen.

Coleman finds out that Bruce Wayne is Batman and threatens to release the information. The Joker dislikes his intervention and threatens to destroy the hospital unless he is killed within an hour.

All the hospitals have been evacuated and Gordon is leaving to secure the race. The Joker convinces Dent to seek revenge for Rachel’s death by posing as a nurse in a hospital ward.

Section 4:

The Joker claims that the city of Gotham will be under his control until the end of the night, filling two ships with explosives: a warship and a ship carrying prisoners.

Batman, with the help of Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), finds the Joker using a sonar device that spies all over the city. Batman arrests the Joker after a fight, but before police arrive to arrest the Joker, he says Gotham citizens will lose hope when they see Dent’s real face.

Harvey Dent is trying to kill Gordon’s son, claiming that Gordon’s negligence caused Rachel to die. Gordon and Batman go to the building where Rachel was killed and find Harvey Dent trying to kill Gordon’s son. Batman eventually kills Dent and rescues Gordon’s son, but asks him to keep Dent’s heroic character.

Gordon cuts off a signal from a police-built device to communicate with Batman, Fox boosts the sonar, and Alfred (Michael Kane) burns a letter from Rachel telling Wayne he’s going to marry Harvey Dent.

Dark Knight Movie Review

The Dark Knight is a sequel to Batman Begins, which depicts Batman confronting the Joker, the most important criminal among Batman’s enemies. In this film, in addition to focusing on the Batman-Joker-Dent triangle, we find that the important point is the city of Gotham itself, a restless city that may face good or bad.

Heath Ledger plays the Joker in a fantastic way. Despite his grin drawn with lipstick, there are obviously two horrible sores in the corner of his mouth, and the cracked, layered white makeup of his face makes his tears even more apparent.

This film portrays the Joker as a superhero. He tries to lead the people of Gotham to crime; Find Batman or bear my wrath, kill others or kill yourself. He is a ruthless psychic who celebrates in times of chaos and is not afraid of pain and death.

Dark Knight Movie Sales

The Dark Knight movie was made with a budget of $185 million.

The film’s sales were $534.9 million in North America and $469.7 million in other countries, totaling $1 billion worldwide. The film had $199.7 million in sales at the opening of the weekend.

The Dark Knight is the world’s 43rd highest-grossing film, the 2008 bestseller, and the fourth highest-grossing film in history, grossing more than $1 billion.

In order to increase film sales to more than $1 billion as well as increase the chances of receiving Academy Awards, Warner Bros. re-released the film on January 23, 2009, and finally crossed the $1 billion mark in February 2009.

Dark Knight Movie Achievements

We have explored the topic of who the most powerful characters in comic books are, with an article discussing the 6 most powerful characters in the DC Universe, as well as the 6 most powerful cosmic characters in the Marvel Omniverse. This time we’d like to dive deeper, and see who the strongest character in all mediums of popular culture is (this covers Anime, comics, and Games.)

Our list is populated with characters spanning various titles, and universes. They may differ in shape, size, power, and medium of presentation. Some are animated, some belong in comic book frames, others exist (so, to speak) as playable video game characters. However, they all possess power enough to alter reality.

10. The Mask

The Mask – a green jade mask of obscure origin. Apparently stolen from a remote tribe by an unnamed explorer during a ritual in honor of the object. Inhabited by a nameless entity that needs a host to do its thing. It has been worn by various individuals and has drawn out a darker side in its hosts.

The mask grants the wearer reality-warping powers that are pretty cartoon-like. The mask enables the wearer the ability to alter their shape, size, and produce weapons from thin air. The Mask’s powers seem to only be limited by the wearer’s imagination.

The only reason the Mask isn’t number one is that no wearer has ever tested the relic’s limits. Potential-wise, it may have the world-breaking ability. A drawback to the item is that it is incredibly evil.

9. Broly (Dragon Ball Universe)

When the topic of the strongest Super Saiyan in the DragonBall universe comes up, Goku – the protagonist of the Dragon Ball narrative – is usually the first on everyone’s list. There is, however, another vegetable-themed member of the extraterrestrial ape race, Broly (a play on Broccoli,) whose power is so great that he may rival the most powerful being yet to be revealed, Beerus.

The Character’s appearance in the DragonBall series has mostly been restricted to movies and OVA’s. Broly’s appearance and origin story have also been reworked since first seeing the light of day, back in 1993.

Broly, in his current iteration, is more mild-mannered, and naive from growing up on a remote planet. He and his father, Paragus, were banished there by Vegeta’s father. Though he is, generally, a gentle giant, the Legendary super sayian is prone to fits of rage – states in which he cannot control his immense power.

He has bested, both Goku, and Vegeta. As well as all most known surviving members of the Saiyan race. It has always taken a concerted effort, and a bit of luck, to defeat him.

8. Asura (Asura’s Wrath)

The lead character in the gaming title, Asura’s Wrath, Asura ‘exists’ in a fictional realm, that is very Dragon-Ball-meets-God-Of-War. Asura is a rage-powered deity who reigns, along with seven other Cyborg-like gods over a Hindu/Buddhist/Sci-Fi-themed world.

As with God of War, Asura’s journey begins with a betrayal by his fellow gods which see him raging through the millennia to enact revenge. The character can draw power from mantra without the aid of a conduit, which other members of the pantheon thought is impossible.

Aided by rage, the fellow goes to fight his way in a duel with the creator of the universe. Whom he dispatches, rip apart the fabric of space and time in the process.

7. Saitama (One Punch Man)

Saitama (One Punch Man)

Though not a deity, Saitama, better known as One Punch Man, possesses the ability to knock an opponent into the next world with a single punch. He claims to have grown that strong from a strict workout routine.

However, there appears to be more to the character’s strength as he has walked away from blasts that would have disintegrated a regular human being, and withstood shots from powerful extraterrestrial beings. Saitama spends his time frustrated by the fact that all his challengers end up underwhelming him.

As a result, he has never used his full potential. Which suggests that he has near-limitless potential.

6. Kratos (God of War)

Kratos is the main character of the God of War series of games. The ‘Ghost of Sparta’ – following a betrayal at the hands of the Greek god of War – Aries, Kratos kills a deity and takes its place in the pantheon.

In subsequent games, Kratos goes on to take on and defeat the entire pantheon. Even going as far as killing Zeus. He doesn’t stop there, the parents of the gods, the Titans, eventually also get a taste of the new gold of war’s rage.

5. The Hulk

Representing the comic book sphere, Marvel’s green rage beast, The Hulk is so powerful it has taken out literal gods. The Hulk, in its ultimate form, is powerful enough to break worlds.

The product of scientist Bruce Banner’s broken psyche, the Hulk is a Gamma-powered personification of the man’s rage. He has single-handedly taken out all the superheroes on Marvel Earth. The Beyonder has even declared the Hulk’s power potentially limitless.

4. Arceus (Pokemon)

The first legendary Pokemon, Arceus, is said to be the reason any Pokemon exists at all. He possesses an assortment of powers, and can apparently bring forth life in addition to creating whole worlds. That’s legitimately powerful.

3. The Presence

The DC Universe’s version of the Judaic God, The Presence is a powerful being with an obscure plan. The Presence is an omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent being. The reason time dawned in the first place – DC time, that is.

The first position ought to be a tie, however, what sets the top 3 most powerful entities in fictional existence, is their weaknesses. The Presence, unlike his counterparts, can be harmed, and even killed (though he returns.)

2. One-Above-All

The One-Above-All is the being behind the Marvel Omniverse. This cosmic entity is the most powerful being in all of Marvel’s creation. Unlike his DC counterpart, he is a benevolent being; as opposed to the helicopter-parenting style observed by the Presence.

What also sets the two entities apart is the fact that, although they are similar beings, omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent, One-Above-All has no known weaknesses. He is yet to be harmed or murdered, although Thanos did manage to absorb him once.

1. Dr. Manhattan

5

Not a god, but a man with god-like abilities. Named after the Manhattan project, DC character Dr. Manhattan (Jonathan Osterman) had a run-in with radiation, which killed him. However, he managed to put himself back together as a being of energy, with god-like abilities.

He’s hyper-intelligent, able to control time, manipulate matter at a subatomic level, and have the ability to perceive the past, present, and future, all at the same time. This guy takes the number one spot because he’s unharmable. In fact, he even reversed and altered his timeline to his existence.

We decided to take into consideration all characters across all fiction universes. However, if you think that there are stronger heroes or beings that we excluded from the list – please let us know.

As a kid, I read a lot of DC comics especially Batman. The Joker character wasn’t so interesting to me as other villains until I watched the Batman movie directed by Tim Burton.

Still today I think that Jack Nicholson role in that movie was the best portrait of Comic Villan of all time.

Heath Ledger did a great performance in The Dark Knight movie as well, but a portrait of Joker was too dark for me.

Yesterday DC released the first trailer of the JOKER – the first real standalone villain movie.

In the trailer, we see a glimpse of how the villain got his start – or at least a glimpse of one origin story.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as Arthur, a troubled man who develops into an obsessive criminal. The trailer mostly shows Arthur without makeup, and the scenes where he’s in makeup seem to take place before he’s wholly committed to the Joker shtick.

Just at the end of the trailer we can see him fully transformed to Joker as we know – the iconic clown villain.

What to Expect from Joker Movie

The Joker film has been in the works since 2017. Announced in the wake of 2016’s Suicide Squad, which saw Jared Leto playing a psychopathic gangster take on the iconic villain.

Honestly, for me, there wasn’t DC movie since The Dark Movie directed by Christopher Nolan. All lately DC movies were good, but not brilliant ones.

I think that Joaquin Phoenix is a brilliant actor and perfect for this role. Phoenix said himself that the movie does not feel like a superhero film and instead is more of a character study.

They announced that Joker is supposed to feel like a Martin Scorsese film, it makes sense that Robert De Niro has been cast in one of the lead roles.

Joker will hit theatres on October 4th, 2019.
