Big Walk 4166, 1899 Puzzle Solution: Crack the Code

If you and your friends have hit a wall in Big Walk, the odds are good that a string of digits is to blame. House House’s co-op wilderness adventure loves a cryptic aside, and the “4166, 1899” number puzzle is the one clogging up group chats right now. It looks like a passcode. It is actually a set of map coordinates, and once you know that, the whole thing untangles fast. Here is the clean version, minus the twenty minutes of aimless wandering.

This is a genuinely clever bit of design, and it is worth understanding why it works rather than just brute-forcing it — that is the difference between finishing the puzzle and being able to help the next player who gets stuck.

First, You Have to Unlock the Map Room

The 4166, 1899 puzzle cannot be solved until you have opened the island’s map room, so do that first. You unlock it by completing the red tower — place the five nubbins (the little collectible MacGuffins the game scatters around the tower’s puzzles) into the console on its roof. Slotting all five rewards you with a key, and that key opens a room right next to your session’s spawn point.

Inside is the payoff: a huge three-dimensional map laid out across the floor. That map is the decoder for every coordinate the game throws at you, this one included. If your run hasn’t reached the map room yet, the numbers will mean nothing — finish the red tower and come back.

Reading 4166 and 1899 as Coordinates

Here is the trick the game never spells out: the numbers are a longitude-and-latitude pair, and you only need the first two digits of each. “4166” points you to longitude line 41 — the numbered lines running up the sides of the floor map. “1899” points you to latitude line 18 — the numbered lines along the top and bottom edges.

Trace 41 across and 18 down, and the grid square where they intersect is your target. On the island itself, that square sits to the east and south of the starter hub — the south-central stretch of the map. Mark it mentally (or drop a teammate on the map room to call it out) before you head back outside.

Finding the Hidden Button on the Island

Now go to that south-central grid square and start hunting for a button — but slow down, because it is deliberately camouflaged. It is tucked into the side of a rock cluster and blends into the terrain, so sprinting past it is the single most common reason players think the puzzle is bugged. Walk the rocks carefully and check them from multiple angles.

This is where Big Walk‘s co-op hook kicks in. The button is a hold, not a toggle: one player has to stay on it while a second player returns to the locked MacGuffin box back at the tower. With the button held down, that box springs open, and your teammate can grab the reward — completing the puzzle for the whole group.

The Bottom Line

Treat “4166, 1899” as coordinates, not a code, and the puzzle stops being intimidating: unlock the map room via the red tower, read 41 and 18 off the floor map, then send one player to hold the camouflaged button in the south-central rocks while another claims the prize. It is a tidy little lesson in how House House hides depth behind a friendly surface — and a reminder that the best co-op puzzles are the ones that force two people to actually talk to each other.
