When he first appeared in the Dark Nights: Metal comic books, he was part of a larger existential threat to the entire DC universe. Since then, we have seen his footprints in all DC titles. He was even featured directly in front of his original DC counterpart in his exclusive series.

Now, in this article, we are going to take a look at the history of the character “Batman Who Laughs” and find out his role in the DC universe.

Who is “Batman Who Laughs”?

The character “Batman Who Laughs” was introduced in 2017. in comic number one of “Dark Days: The Casting” by Scott Snyder and Greg Campolo. He is a terrifying shape of Bruce Wayne in one of the many Dark Multiverse worlds.

In Earth-22, the Joker successfully identifies Batman and kills Gordon. He also caused many children to be orphaned by the horrific attacks on Gotham. Batman then clashes with the Joker. This battle ends with the death of the Joker. When the Joker dies, the poison leaves his body and enters the body of the Dark Knight.

When this poison penetrates Bruce Wayne’s body, it distracts his mind and soul. Under the influence of this poison, Bruce finds a Joker-like temperament and has an infinite desire to kill. He brutally kills all his allies (including most of the Batman family and members of the Justice League group) before they know what has happened to him.

He even corrupts his son Damian and several of Gotham’s new orphans.

Dark Nights: Metal

In this crossover, “Batman Who Laughs ” leads the Dark Knights (other evil versions of Bruce Wayne, who have changed to look like members of the Justice League). In the Dark Multiverse, he quickly defeats the original DC Batman and Superman and takes control of Gotham City. He then uses the legendary metals of the DC world, such as Nth Metal, to build his headquarters on Mount Challengers.

In this comic, we first see the complete reign of Batman’s greatest enemies. But then batman who laughs fans are systematically defeated by their Justice League counterparts, while Batman and Superman return to DC. Bruce decides to enlist the help of the Joker. The two make peace with each other for a while to thwart the plans of this villain.

After defeating the villain, Batman takes him as a security prisoner under the supervision of the Justice League headquarters in Washington D.C.

Year of the Villain

Despite the Joker’s warnings, Lex Luthor decided to use the character “Batman Who Laughs” to carry out his evil plans. He wanted to defeat the members of the Justice League group forever. When the evil Batman finds a new opportunity for revenge, he decides to bring different injuries to Bruce and his relatives. Batman also has to take different measures to confront him. But batman who laughs corrupts Commissioner Gordon and uses poison to turn him into one of his allies. The villain’s plans do not end here. He continues to corrupt characters such as Billy Batson (Shazam) and Donna Troy with the poison of the Dark Multiverse.

“Batman Who Laughs” does not stop trying to form his Justice League group. To achieve his goals, he constantly corrupts other familiar faces and adds them to his group.

This villain shows what a terrible thing he can do if Batman breaks his moral rules in the DC world and approaches the Joker character.

The Full Story of The Film

Section 1:

A criminal gang robs Gotham City Bank and kills each other over money splitting, and eventually, all the money goes to the Joker (Heath Ledger). Batman (Christine Bell), Harvey Dent District Attorney (Aaron Eckhart), and Lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman) form an alliance to rid Gotham City of organized crime.

Bruce Wayne believes that despite Dent as Gotham’s protector, he can retire from being Batman and start a normal life with Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

Sal Maroni, Gamble, and Chechnya, who are leading the criminals, hold a meeting in which Lao, a Chinese accountant who hid the criminals’ money, talks to them via video conference. The Joker enters the meeting and offers to kill Batman in exchange for half the money.

The crowd rejects the offer, and Gamble sets a prize for the Joker. The Joker finds and kills Gamble, and as a result, the leaders of the criminals decide to accept the Joker’s offer.

Section 2:

Batman arrests Lao in Hong Kong and allows Dent to arrest all the criminals. The Joker threatens to kill people unless Batman reveals his true identity and threatens to kill Police Commissioner Jillian B. Loeb (Colin McFarlane) and the judge.

The Joker tries to kill Mayor Anthony Garcia, but Gordon sacrifices himself to stop the assassination. Dent realizes that Rachel is the Joker’s next target. Bruce Wayne decides to reveal his secret identity to prevent further murders, but before he can take action, Dent announces to the Joker that he is Batman.

Gordon arrests the Joker and promotes Dent to Commissar while the Joker kidnaps Dent. Batman saves Dent from the Joker, and Batman returns to save Batman.

Section 3:

Rachel and Dent are escorted home with bodyguards, but Gordon later learns that they have never been home. Batman interrogates the Joker and the Joker tells him that he has imprisoned them in two different places with explosives and that Batman can only save one of them.

Batman goes to rescue Rachel while Gordon tries to save Dent. He enters the building but realizes that the Joker has sent him to Dent. Both buildings explode, Rachel is killed but Dent is only injured and loses half of her face.

The Joker escapes with Lao to take him instead of the money, the Joker burns his share of the money and kills Lao and Chechen.

Coleman finds out that Bruce Wayne is Batman and threatens to release the information. The Joker dislikes his intervention and threatens to destroy the hospital unless he is killed within an hour.

All the hospitals have been evacuated and Gordon is leaving to secure the race. The Joker convinces Dent to seek revenge for Rachel’s death by posing as a nurse in a hospital ward.

Section 4:

The Joker claims that the city of Gotham will be under his control until the end of the night, filling two ships with explosives: a warship and a ship carrying prisoners.

Batman, with the help of Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), finds the Joker using a sonar device that spies all over the city. Batman arrests the Joker after a fight, but before police arrive to arrest the Joker, he says Gotham citizens will lose hope when they see Dent’s real face.

Harvey Dent is trying to kill Gordon’s son, claiming that Gordon’s negligence caused Rachel to die. Gordon and Batman go to the building where Rachel was killed and find Harvey Dent trying to kill Gordon’s son. Batman eventually kills Dent and rescues Gordon’s son, but asks him to keep Dent’s heroic character.

Gordon cuts off a signal from a police-built device to communicate with Batman, Fox boosts the sonar, and Alfred (Michael Kane) burns a letter from Rachel telling Wayne he’s going to marry Harvey Dent.

Dark Knight Movie Review

The Dark Knight is a sequel to Batman Begins, which depicts Batman confronting the Joker, the most important criminal among Batman’s enemies. In this film, in addition to focusing on the Batman-Joker-Dent triangle, we find that the important point is the city of Gotham itself, a restless city that may face good or bad.

Heath Ledger plays the Joker in a fantastic way. Despite his grin drawn with lipstick, there are obviously two horrible sores in the corner of his mouth, and the cracked, layered white makeup of his face makes his tears even more apparent.

This film portrays the Joker as a superhero. He tries to lead the people of Gotham to crime; Find Batman or bear my wrath, kill others or kill yourself. He is a ruthless psychic who celebrates in times of chaos and is not afraid of pain and death.

Dark Knight Movie Sales

The Dark Knight movie was made with a budget of $185 million.

The film’s sales were $534.9 million in North America and $469.7 million in other countries, totaling $1 billion worldwide. The film had $199.7 million in sales at the opening of the weekend.

The Dark Knight is the world’s 43rd highest-grossing film, the 2008 bestseller, and the fourth highest-grossing film in history, grossing more than $1 billion.

In order to increase film sales to more than $1 billion as well as increase the chances of receiving Academy Awards, Warner Bros. re-released the film on January 23, 2009, and finally crossed the $1 billion mark in February 2009.

Still today I think that Jack Nicholson role in that movie was the best portrait of Comic Villan of all time.

Heath Ledger did a great performance in The Dark Knight movie as well, but a portrait of Joker was too dark for me.

Yesterday DC released the first trailer of the JOKER – the first real standalone villain movie.

In the trailer, we see a glimpse of how the villain got his start – or at least a glimpse of one origin story.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as Arthur, a troubled man who develops into an obsessive criminal. The trailer mostly shows Arthur without makeup, and the scenes where he’s in makeup seem to take place before he’s wholly committed to the Joker shtick.

Just at the end of the trailer we can see him fully transformed to Joker as we know – the iconic clown villain.

What to Expect from Joker Movie

The Joker film has been in the works since 2017. Announced in the wake of 2016’s Suicide Squad, which saw Jared Leto playing a psychopathic gangster take on the iconic villain.

Honestly, for me, there wasn’t DC movie since The Dark Movie directed by Christopher Nolan. All lately DC movies were good, but not brilliant ones.

I think that Joaquin Phoenix is a brilliant actor and perfect for this role. Phoenix said himself that the movie does not feel like a superhero film and instead is more of a character study.

They announced that Joker is supposed to feel like a Martin Scorsese film, it makes sense that Robert De Niro has been cast in one of the lead roles.

Joker will hit theatres on October 4th, 2019.
