Abilities

His signature ability is called Dizzy. When you use FIRE, it sends it floating in the air and shoots blinding plasma blasts at enemies. Multiple enemies can be simultaneously hit by this ability but will turn into a globule upon expiring. Enemies can force Dizzy into a globule by shooting it down. It will stay in globule form for 20 seconds before disappearing. During these 20 seconds, Gekko can retrieve the ability for reuse after a cool down of 10 seconds.

One of his normal abilities is Moshpit. Moshpit is a molly ability. He throws Moshpit using the same mechanics Kay/o uses to throw his molly. Gekko’s molly detonates after hitting the floor, dealing quick ticks of damage over a short time. The detonation consists of the inner radius, dealing maximum damage, and the outer radius, dealing less damage. The windup time before detonating lasts three seconds to let enemies escape before taking damage. The inner radius does 150 damage, and the outer does 75 damage. This molly also inflicts reduced damage to allies.

His final ability is Wingman, arguably the most special ability in Valorant. When you FIRE using Wingman, he will run forward, searching for enemies. If the Wingman hits a wall, he will bounce off and continue on another path. Once locating an enemy, it will follow them. Once close enough, it will stop and clap its hands- concussing any enemies in front.
Using ALT FIRE targeting a planted or spike will send the Wingman to defuse it. If used when possessing the spike, Wingman will go onto the site and plant for you. After defusing or planting, Wingman will expire, causing it to turn into a globule. Enemies can also shoot Wingman to prevent him from planting/defusing the spike.

Ultimate of Gekko

Finally, Gekko’s ultimate ability is Thrash. You need to obtain seven ult points to use Thrash. Once equipping the ability, using FIRE will connect Gekko will gain remote control of the ability. Thrash always moves forward- you can only steer and jump while controlling it. Upon activation, Thrash will launch forward and explode. The explosion will detain anyone in the radius (including Gekko and any allies). Enemies can shoot and force Thrash into a globule before it activates.

Brimstone

One of the five original Valorant agents, Brimstone is an American controller. A controller is generally used to set up smokes for the team and provide cover. Brimstone is a popular choice among smokers because he can use up to three smoke clouds from his ability: “Sky Smoke”. He has two additional supporting utilities: “Incendiary” (which is a Molotov) and “Stim Beacon” (which is a beacon that grants players extra speed, faster fire rate, and faster reload). His ultimate power (a power that can be used once in a while after obtaining a certain number of Ult Points through combat or picking them up) is called “Orbital Strike”. Orbital Strike is a massive laser beam that shoots down from the sky, harming everyone inside and obscuring vision.

Sova

Sova is the initiator of the original five. An initiator does what the name suggests- they initiate attacks on site and are used to locate enemies. Sova is a Russian archer with an essential ability named “Recon Bolt”. Recon Bolts send waves in all directions around themselves, marking every enemy hit by them. He also has the “Owl Drone”, a drone he can control and use to tag enemies. His other utility is a “Shock Bolt” that spawns an orb of electricity wherever it lands, dealing some damage. His Ultimate, “Hunter’s Fury”, is a massive bow that shoots a laser beam through walls that can reach far distances. He can shoot three beams with one usage. Each beam deals 80 damage, meaning two shots can kill a fully armored enemy.

Sage

Sage is the sentinel of the original five agents. A sentinel primarily focuses on holding down sites and preventing enemy flank plays. Sage’s primary ability, “Healing Orb”, is a heal that completely heals any allies back to 100 health. However, she can only heal herself by 30 health. Her other two abilities are “Barrier Orb” (A wall that has 800 health) and “Slow Orb” (An orb that spawns in ice on the floor it hits that slows down anyone on it).

Phoenix

Phoenix is British and is one of the two original duelists in Valorant. A duelist’s role is to take the front lines in fights and get the most kills. Phoenix’s primary ability is his Molotov named “Hot Hands”. He can use Hot Hands to molly enemies or to heal himself. Another ability of his is “Blaze”, a wall that blocks vision and burns anyone that touches it. He can use his wall to heal himself as well. His last utility is “Curveball”, a flash that he can throw to the left or right, blinding any players looking in its direction.

Jett

Jett is the other Duelist in the original five. She comes from South Korea, and her abilities are movement oriented. Her “Tailwind” lets her dash in whichever direction she is moving. “Updraft” is another one of her movement abilities. Updraft allows her to launch up into the sky. Her last ability is called “Cloudburst”, a ball of smoke that lasts five seconds. Jett’s Ultimate, “Blade Storm”, lets her equip five super accurate knives. If Jett kills an enemy by throwing individual knives, she recharges all five knives. Right-clicking will throw all five at once. However, a right-click kill will not recharge her ability.

Viper

Viper is an American Chemist. She plays the role of controller. Her signature ability- “Toxic Screen”, is a long wall of toxic cloud that obstructs vision and poisons enemies who touch it. The other two abilities are “Snake Bite” (a poisonous Molly that deals fast damage as well as making them vulnerable) and “Poison Cloud”, Which is a ball of toxic cloud that temporarily decreases the health of enemies inside. Her Ultimate is an enlarged version of her Poison Cloud. She releases a large poisonous cloud that can sometimes encase an entire site. Enemies’ health who are in it will lose all but one HP.

Omen

Omen is the only agent whose identity is unknown. He is a mysterious controller. His primary ability- “Dark Cover,” provides a ball of shadow to obscure vision. Omen’s “Shrouded Step” enables him to teleport anywhere in a small area around himself. His “Paranoia” is a unique blinding ability that goes through walls and inflicts near-sightedness on anyone hit. “From the Shadows” is his Ultimate ability; it lets him teleport anywhere onto the map. He can cancel the teleportation once using it. Enemies can also force Omen to cancel his Ultimate by killing his shadow before he fully teleports.

Killjoy

Killjoy, a German mechanical genius, is one of the most popular sentinels. Her abilities are all things she designed herself. “Turret” is her signature ability. It spawns a small sentry gun that automatically shoots any enemies it sees. Killjoy has a Molly ability, “Nanoswarm”, which she can throw without activating. She can remotely activate her Nanoswarm from anywhere on the map. Her last ability is “Alarm Bot”, which alerts her whenever a player steps near it. Killjoy’s Ultimate ability is what makes her so popular. “Lockdown” spawns a semi-sphere bubble that covers an entire site. After placing it down, enemies have 13 seconds to get out of the area. If they’re caught inside after windup time, they become detained.

Cypher

Cypher is a Sentinel. Hailing from Morocco, he is a very useful agent for gathering information and defense. His signature ability- “Spycam”, is a camera he places on walls that he can remotely access and use to shoot enemies with a tracking dart. Cypher’s “Tripwire” is a digital wire spanning two vertical surfaces. Cypher gets notified whenever it gets broken or whenever someone passes it. His last normal ability is “Cyber Cage”: once it’s thrown, he can activate it to provide a visual cover.

Reyna

Reyna is Duelist hailing from Mexico. Her primary abilities are “Devour” and “Dismiss”, which she can only use after killing or assisting in killing an enemy. Reyna can either heal from the kill (Devour) or turn invisible and invincible for a few seconds using the soul (Dismiss). Her other ability is “Leer”, an eye that she can place through walls. It near-sights enemies in front of it. Her Ultimate is “Empress”, which increases her fire rate and reload speed. While using her Ultimate, she automatically heals after every kill without using the ability.

Raze

Raze is a Brazilian Duelist. Her Signature Ability- “Paint Shells” Is a grenade that spews out five smaller grenades upon detonation. “Paint Shells” automatically recharges upon killing two enemies in one round. She also has a “Boom Bot”, a robot that travels on a straight path and bounces off walls. Once sighting an enemy, it will track them and explode once close enough. Raze also has two “Blast Packs”; she uses these to bounce high into the air and can stack both uses to gain extra height. Her Ultimate ability: “Showstopper” is a giant paint bazooka that kills anyone in its explosion radius.

Breach

Hailing from Sweden, Breach is a bionic initiator. His primary ability, “Fault Line”, causes a long striped quake that concusses enemies. Breach also has a flash ability called “Flashpoint”, which he can use to flash people behind objects/walls. His last ability is “After Shock”, which shoots three beams of energy through walls, each tick dealing 60 damage. His Ultimate is an enlarged version of his “Fault Line” ability. It sends a large quake that can cover an entire site. Players caught in it are knocked into the air and get concussed.

Skye

Skye is an initiator from Australia. She is most useful at gathering intel and supporting the team. Her signature ability- “Guiding Light”, is a bird that follows the player’s cursor after use. Pressing the equip button again will cause the bird to explode, blinding anyone in front of it. Her “Regrowth” ability heals teammates in a radius around her. It can heal 100 HP. Her last ability is called “Trailblazer”, a small Tasmanian tiger figure she can remotely control after use and bite enemies to concuss them and deal 30 damage. Her Ultimate: “Seekers” spawns in three floating plants that seek enemies and blind if not killed.

Yoru

Yoru is a duelist who hails from Japan. His main ability- “Gatecrash”, is a tether that he can right-click to place or left-click to send forward. Upon pressing the equip button again, he teleports to the tether instantly. His other abilities are “Fakeout” (a fake clone that blinds enemies once damaged) and “Blindside” (a flash ability that flashes everyone after bouncing on a surface once). His Ultimate ability: “Dimensional Drift”, lets him become invisible to enemies for 12 seconds. While invisible, Yoru can still use his abilities. To come out of the Ultimate early, you can press the equip button again.

Astra

Astra is a Ghanaian controller. Her signature ability is “Stars”, which must be pre-placed on the map in her Astral Form. Once placed, she can use these stars during rounds to either smoke, pull in enemies, or damage players near it. Her Ultimate ability, “Cosmic Divide”, places an infinitely high purple wall that spans the entire map. Cosmic Divide’s wall blocks bullets, but players can walk through.

Kay/o

Kay/o is a unique initiator. We do not know much about him except that he comes from a future timeline. His main ability, “Zero/point”, is a throwing knife that detects and suppresses any enemies in its radius. His “Frag/ment” is a normal Molly ability. He also has a flash ability called “Flash/drive”. His Ultimate- “NULL/cmd” sends waves of suppression from Kay/o. He also gains a battle stim effect while using his Ultimate. If he dies after activating his Ultimate ability, a teammate can revive him. Enemies can prevent this by shooting his downed body.

Chamber

Chamber is a French sentinel. His main ability is “Rendezvous”, a box he places which he can use to teleport back. The other two abilities are “Trademark” (a camera on the floor that slows down enemies which get located by it) and “Headhunter” (a Deagle-like gun he can purchase bullets for at the beginning of each round). His Ultimate: “Tour De Force” is a sniper rifle that kills players in one shot. Chamber gets five rounds of ammunition along with the sniper rifle.

Neon

Neon is a duelist hailing from the Philippines. Her main attribute is her speed which lets her run faster than all other agents. Her primary ability is “High Gear”, which she can use to speed up. However, she cannot shoot while running using “High Gear”. Her other abilities are “Fast Lane” (a pair of blue walls that block players’ vision) and “Relay Bolt” (two bolts that she shoots that concuss anyone who gets hit). Her Ultimate- “Overdrive”, lets her shoot a powerful laser beam from her finger. Neon can use her Ultimate until her “High Gear” runs out.

Fade

Fade is a Turkish initiator. She is best for gathering intel on enemies. Her signature ability is “Haunt”, an eye that locates and marks any enemies in its radius. The other two abilities are “Prowler” (a floating mouth that sights enemies that it bites) and “Seize” (a ball that places a radius of which enemies cannot leave if trapped inside. Players also get deafened when inside the “Seize” radius. Fade’s Ultimate power is “Night Fall”, a pulse of darkness that goes through walls. Any enemy caught in it will get marked as well as deafened.

Harbor

Hailing from India, Harbor is the latest controller in Valorant. All his powers are water-based. His signature ability is “High Tide”, a tall and long wall that blocks vision and slows anyone who passes through it. He also has “Cove”, a small bubble that absorbs 500 damage. His final normal ability is “Cascade”, a medium-sized water wall that pushes forward. “Cascade” can be stopped by pressing the same equip button. Harbor’s Ultimate Ability is “Reckoning”, a large circle on the floor that locates and concusses any players standing in the radius.

How Aimlab works?

The game starts off by giving you a few practice rounds and determining your level based on the outcomes of these games. Then, it lets you practice by giving you increasingly challenging matches. Valorant’s settings 

You can boost your fps by a reasonable amount most of the time just by turning down your graphics settings (Note that this is mostly for players who get below 100 fps). If your game already runs anywhere above that: turning down settings won’t increase the fps a significant amount because your system can run the game smoothly with the higher settings already. However, do keep in mind that turning off certain settings such as the shadows may jeopardize your gameplay as you will no longer see your opponents’ shadows. Turning off or lowering most other aesthetic settings will increase your fps but make will make your game lose the crisp quality it had. Another thing that may be limiting your fps is the “limit fps” setting. Be sure to turn this off to get the highest fps. 

That was the simple manner of boosting your fps. If that wasn’t good enough for your needs, there is also another way to increase your fps- and that is to optimize the way your computer runs Valorant. 

PC Optimisation for higher fps in Valorant

Now there is a tough pill to be swallowed here. If your PC is simply not good enough to run Valorant effectively, no amount of optimization can really enhance the fps. Make sure your PC has at least the minimum requirements to run the game. These are listed below:

• Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz / AMD Athlon 200GE
• RAM: 4 GB
• OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
• GPU: Intel HD 4000 / Radeon R5 20
• VRAM- 1000 MB

If you have these or anything better than these, your PC should be able to run Valorant. However, it will run very poorly. The recommended specs are as follows- 

• Processor: Intel Core i3-4150 3.5GHz / AMD FX-6100
• RAM: 4 GB
• OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
• GPU: GeForce GT 730 / Radeon R7 240
• VRAM: 1000 MB

Your PC should be able to run the game decently well if you have the specs above or anything better. If your PC does not meet the requirements, it’s time to upgrade to something better. If it does, great! Now we can move on and talk about how you can optimize your PC while playing Valorant. The first thing to make sure of is to close any unnecessary applications that may be running in the background. Having lots of applications running at the same time can significantly drag your performance down. There are also some ways to optimize the way your PC runs the game by changing some settings. 

For NVIDIA users:

1. Search for “adjust image settings” under the 3D Settings category 
2. Click on the “Use my preference emphasizing”, move the slider to performance and click apply.

Some more steps you can take to improve fps are:

1. Go into “manage 3D settings”
2. Click “program settings” and add settings for Valorant
3. Configure these settings- 

• Antistrophic Filtering – Off
• Antialiasing – Off
• Refresh Rate – Controlled by Program
• Energy Mode – Maximum Performance
• Low Latency Mode – On
• Multi-Frame Sampled  AA – Off
• Vertical V-Sync – Off
• Pre-Rendered Frames – 1

1. Ensure that your drivers are up to date for Valorant by going into G-Force Experience

For Windows users:

1. Launch Valorant and open “Task Manager”
2. Click “Details” in the tab section and search for “Valorant-Win64-shipping.exe and right-click on it, click “Set-Priority” and set it to “High”
3. Redo steps 1 and 2, but this time search for “Valorant.exe” and set the priority to High. (Note that you will have to do this every time you reopen Valorant.

Crosshair:

Two, relatively new, online multiplayer shooter titles have taken the gaming industry by a storm of late. Riot’s VALORANT and Respawn’s Apex Legends are the two popular contemporary action shooters. The debate has begun to spring up in online forums, as to which may be the better game. We checked it out!

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is an online multiplayer battle royale gaming title coming from the same people who brought us the Titan Fall series of games. Developed by Respawn Entertainment, the game pits players against one another in a 3-on-3 deathmatch where teams must outlast opposing squads to win.

Based on TitanFall, though it is a different game, Apex legends has players go up against each other in control of any of 18 (currently) precast characters. Players have access to purchasable skins and weapons which will differentiate their character from another, but that’s beside the point.

Players take part in the action as one of 30 2-person, or 20 3-person teams. Teams are airdropped onto a map where the team leader chooses where the team lands. Once teams are on the ground, they search for supplies, weapons, ammo, and armor. Then they search for teams to battle.

The play area gets smaller as the game progresses, forcing teams into combat situations. Any player who remains outside of the play area long enough takes damage to the point where they can die. The team with the most players alive at the end of play are crowned match winners.

VALORANT

VALORANT on the other hand is an online multiplayer first-person hero shooter that, though having a futuristic theme, is very similar, in gameplay, to counter-Strike or Overwatch. The Riot Games title challenges players to fight more strategically than its fast-paced counterpart.

Pitting players against each other in 5-against-5 battles. Using weapons and special abilities, users strategically navigate through maps to complete objectives. Similar to Counter-Strike, VALORANT features a bomb planting mission, where an attacking team must duke it out against a defending team, to plant and detonate an explosive device known as a Spike.

Players get a wider assortment of weapons (along with customizable skins) on VALORANT, from submachine guns to pistols, to machine guns, to shotguns, they will find that they are spoiled for choice, in terms of which weapons and strategies to go with.

Like other tactical shooters, matches consist of Rounds, and the team with the most rounds won, at the end of the play, gets the overall victory. There are different modes of play, in which different challenges are set out for opposing teams. Spike Rush mode – for instance, is a bomb-planting challenge such as one might find on Counter-Strike.

The game features an Unrated gaming mode, Spike Rush (aforementioned,) a Competitive mode which ranks players on performance, A Deathmatch (free-for-all) mode, and a mode called escalation, which is similar to the Gun Game mode available in Counter-Strike, and Call of Duty: Black Ops.

A lot of competitive players seek help from Valorant coaching to quickly climb through the ranks especially when compared to a fast-paced game like Apex Legends where a more tactical mind is required.

So is Apex Legends or VALORANT the best?

Well, that depends entirely on what the gamer is after. If one has an appetite for a fast-paced survival action, then Apex Legends would be the game to go for. If one is after a more tactical gaming experience, where the wrong step could jeopardize the whole team, then VALORANT is the better game.

Either way, both games are brilliant and deliver enough of their own unique appeal to have players alternating between the two of them, depending on the mood, without ever having to pick a favourite. Apex’s Legend’s shrinking battleground mechanism offers hair-raising moments, while VALORANT has one in perpetual suspense in anticipation of the next enemy encounter.

CSGO, which has seen a number of iterations through the years, is the favorite online shooter title of a number of avid gaming fans. This is evidenced by the fact that the game enjoys a strong esports following and it is one of the top esports titles in the world. Valorant has been touted as the game that has the potential to unseat CSGO as the top first-person shooter.

With Valorant increasingly gaining user’s momentum, talk of it eventually usurping CSGO as the go-to FPS exports title. We threw together a comparison of the two games to see which comes out ahead in this fan-created feud.

Updates of CSGO and Valorant

Seeing as gameplay between the titles is quite similar we looked at things that gamers would find essential to sustained game enjoyment. Regular updates are rather key to the effect.

Valorant has been quite consistent with updates since its release in June. The game’s developer releases small updates to clear bugs and other issues on a fortnightly basis, whereas CSGO updates are a bit more sporadic. This is to be expected, however, as Valorant is a far younger game than CSGO is, and naturally requires more patching up.

Content  between CSGO and Valorant

CSGO seems to win this category as it fosters a more open content environment, enabling players to create and sell their own weapon skins, maps, and other content. Valorant, on the other hand, keeps content creation and sale exclusively in the hands of the company, which many patrons may find restrictive. That having been said (or written, rather,) for some players it’s about the action.

ESports

CSGO has been at it for over 20 years, so they’re a lot more well-heeled in this arena. The game hosts ESEA, and FPL tournaments, so players, whether in teams or in solo play, are never without something to do.

Valorant, being fairly new, doesn’t have as big an esports game plan set up yet. They have introduced something novel though, filling the export gap with a host of small cup tournaments – to keep things lively.

By The Numbers?

As of June, of this year, Valorant was clocking in at about 14 million players per year, a lot stronger than the 3 million players it logged when it had just been released. Still, this is a far cry from CSGO’s 27 million monthly active player average. So by recent numbers, CSGO is still the more popular of the two titles.

That is not to say it will stay that way, as Valorant has gained a large following in a short amount of time. The tables could still turn in Valorant’s favor, as a new age of gaming continues to take root in gaming culture.

Blizzard and its Past

Blizzard came into being as a videogame company named Silicon Synapse. The game developer/publisher started out creating game ports for other studios. It wasn’t until 1993, that the firm started working on its own titles, Rock n’ Roll Racing and The Lost Vikings, following a change of the company’s name to Chaos Studios.

After being acquired and sold off several times, by larger firms, the firm, in 1996, acquired Condor Games, which had been working on a new gaming title. The merger of the two-game studios spawned what is now Blizzard Entertainment, with the game that Condor had been developing becoming the newly formed firm’s initial offering. That game was Diablo.

Blizzard in the recent years

Blizzard traditionally isn’t a company that churns out new titles every year. Instead, they prefer to work on expanding their existing line of titles with expansions and new versions. This changed however, when the company split from Vivendi in 2014 when the company that brought the world the Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo franchises released Hearthstone, a collectible card game.

The following year in 2015, Blizzard released another title, Heroes of the Storm, a casual multiplayer, online brawler title meant to compete, directly, with rival firm, Riot’s League of Legends. The year after that, they capped their three year run of new title releases with Overwatch, a game that would go-on to become a competitor to – Riot developed – genre-mate, VALORANT.

The company’s public image has taken quite a knock in recent years, in light of controversial decisions, and claims of poor exports management. Blizzard, who’s title were once esports favourites has seen it’s patronage number shrink, in recent years, as a result.

Riot games past and starting point

Founded in 2006, Los Angeles-based Riot games spent the first 10 years of its life dedicated to a single game, League of Legends. The League creator was founded on the notion that a company could be successful through long term monetization – a business model based on Asian gaming titles, who’s stables issue on a free-to-play basis, but offer in-game purchases.

Although League of Legends was a popular title, after a decade of annual updates to the globally-played game, Riot announced a number of multiplayer titles. In 2019, the studio released a League of Legends spinoff title for mobile (iOS and Android,) Teamfight Tactics, an auto-battler that served as Riot’s initial foray into other competitive markets.

A month after the release of Teamfight Tactics, Riot published their first stand-alone title since League, Legends of Runeterra. This title turned out to be a collectible card game, similar to Blizzard’s Hearthstone. Legends of Runeterra, however, was designed to be more accessible.

Competitiveness of Blizzard and Riot Games

Then came an online shooter from Riot Games that would be a direct competitor to Blizzard’s Overwatch, VALORANT. Though being claimed, by critics, to be a copy of Overwatch, VALORANT is very much its own game. Despite also being futuristically themed, and players having special abilities (among other similarities) VALORANT is more similar to CounterStrike, or Rainbow Six; complete with the fact that there’s almost no coming back from a headshot.

Closing thoughts

The two companies represent two separate generations in gaming culture. Blizzard appears to have assumed the old-guard position, struggling to translate it’s past successes into a new generation of gamers, while Riot, on the other hand, seems to understand the current age of gaming better. Riot’s titles are more mobile-friendly than Blizzard’s. Being the younger of the two firms, Riot seems to have learned from Blizzard’s follies, and is capitalizing on opportunities that the Warcraft creator is missing.

Apex Legends Mobile announced in April of this year the game becoming open for regional beta-testing (beginning with the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and recently, Hong Kong). In May of 2021, it is making its slow creep onto mobile. The online multiplayer Battle Royale shooter developed by Respawn Entertainment, and published by Electronic Arts (EA) is slated to see full-scale release in 2022. It will also support cross-platform play.

Apex Legends Gameplay

Based on Respawn Entertainment’s Mech-Battle title, Titanfall, Apex Legends is more Battle Royale oriented. Instead of piloting Mechanical Amours, players take control of one of 18 precast characters. Each of them possesses their own unique abilities (Legends,) and weaknesses. You can customize characters through found or bought cosmetic changes.

The premise of the game is rather uncomplicated. Players take each other on in teams of three, in a format similar to other shooters; Counterstrike, and Valorant, for instance. General Apex Legends matches (in their current format,) feature 20 squads. Those squads consist of three players, each. Players then enter a match by joining teams, or being randomly matched by the game’s system. After which they’re airdropped onto a location of the playing map.

Where, on the map, the team lands is up to a single player, who assumes the role of “jumpmaster”. Though, you can deviate from the intended landing trajectory. Apex Legends’ gameplay is set up so that no two members on a squad can play as the same character, which keeps the game dynamic.

Once players land on the playing map, they search for weapons and other useful equipment. They ‘scavenge’ through crates and buildings, stacking their inventory, while also keeping watch for rival crews.

What makes this game different?

The game allows similar movement to other titles in the shooter genre. However, it also features additional movement options derived from various versions of Apex Legends, Titanfall. Said movement options enable players to slide down inclined surfaces, climb over low obstacles, as well as zip-line across wide areas to shorten travel time. Allowing players to employ a diverse set of strategies during play, while using the game’s non-verbal “ping” based communication system.

The playable area on the in-game map gradually shrinks as the match continues. It shrinks around a randomly selected point, a process aimed at forcing players into encounters. Any player remaining outside the “safe zone” will incur damage. Being unable to get back into the safe zone will result in a player dying.

Death isn’t the absolute end during Apex Legends gameplay, though there are some time-sensitive conditions. When someone makes you incapacitated (Knocked Down), squad members can revive you. A player who is killed can be brought back into the action. Only if said player’s teammates retrieve the Respawn Banner that appears at the spot where the player has died. With a given time limit, of course.

Currently, in its 10th season, the game introduces new characters, weapons, and gameplay additions. The previous season of the games introduced the ‘Arena’ gameplay mode. It has players team up in a 3 vs 3 match, over a period of rounds.

Team’s with a 2 or 3 point lead are crowned the winners of the given match. Should a match go to a 9th round – meaning teams are evenly matched.

Seasons?

Like Valorant, Apex Legends calls its updates Seasons. Each season is usually accompanied by the introduction of a new playable character, weapons, cosmetic upgrades, new gameplay changes, and events, as well as alterations to playing maps. The latest (at time of writing) Season came with the introduction of a character known as Seer, along with the Rampage LMG weapon, among other gameplay augmentations.

Public Support

Taking a page from musical artist Beyonce’s playbook – also hoping to avoid negative backlash from Titanfall loyalists – Respawn, and publisher, EA opted to go for a surprise release. Only having 100 internet influencers tease the game during half-time of the Super Bowl, a day before its official release, the publisher created a lot of hype for the online shooter.

Critics received the title rather favorably, with many going as far as claiming it to be a worthy challenger to Fortnite’s dominance over the Battle-Royale genre. Though players decried the absence of some of Titanfall’s in-game mechanics, they praised the title’s gameplay, as well as called its non-verbal communication system innovative.

Us sports Egaming-oriented Channel has broadcasted its live tournament. As of April of this year, Statistics report Apex Legends to have over 100 million registered users, with EA reporting that the title adds 8 -10 million players a week.

The game broke records at release, registering over a million players within the first 8 hours of release, and going on to clear $92 million in revenue – across all platforms – within the initial month of release. This set a record as the highest sum for a newly released battle-royale game within the first month of release.

Being Riot Games’ first shot taken at the fps scene, Valorant made its appearance through a creatively executed partnership with Twitch that handed out beta access selectively, and has since then grown into a smash hit among gamers.

 However, Valorant does not rely on strategic marketing alone to impress players. Instead, Riot’s formula was to make the game play itself the primary focus. The theory behind what Riot calls “Competitive Integratity” is that if one wants to create a game to be enjoyed for years to come, focussing characters and maps may not have the same impact as focussing on the actual experience of playing – as maps and the like can always come in at a later stage.

The approach that Riot Games use with Valorant’s game play is all about making the player feel fully responsible for any mistakes that cause losses, not cheating, or balance issues that can be blamed on Riot Games. This is great because it works both ways, players are responsible for making the decisions that win matches – not an advantage created by asymmetry to how the map was designed. Of course people can buy Valorant accounts, however the competitive balance within the game is still there compared to other games in the FPS niche.

The Actual Gameplay

 At its core, Valorant’s gameplay is a page taken straight out of Counter Strike’s book. Players go against each other in teams of 5. With bomb planting as  one team’s objective, while the other is tasked with eliminating the other team or defusing it.

As familiar as all this sounds to Counter Strike players, Valorant is a completely different offering to the former as Riot Games’ creativity adds an extra layer of strategic playing by adding a special abilities element to Valorant.

With special ops and terrorists having been replaced by 11 characters with unique special abilities – known simply as Agents, players must be sure to choose an Agent who’s abilities will complement those chosen by other players in their team. The fact that you cannot switch agents until a match is entirely over makes this choice that little bit more important.

Each Agent character comes with their own signature ability. This is standard and will be replaced every round. Agents also have an ultimate ability and two other abilities they can use during matches. The former is earned by accumulating kills, while the later two must be purchased at the beginning of each round.

In much the same manner as Counter Strike, weapons are purchased at the beginning of each round. As for the weapons themselves, one has to get a little used to how they work – harsh recoil and a lot of spray – before getting the best of what Valorant has to offer.

The aforementioned spray is at its worst when players are moving, so most engagements on Valorant mean coming to a complete halt – where the best aim and quickest trigger finger decides who the winner is. These pauses end amazingly quickly, in case you were wondering.

At this point in time, Valorant only has five maps available for players to choose from. Thankfully, there’s more than enough in it’s gameplay that it takes a while to fully notice this. Getting to know these maps is advised, as it is always helpful when trying to anticipate enemies movements – the fact that you only have 4 to learn makes this easier.

Conclusion

Though Valorant is totally void of a storyline, the tangible focus on the gameplay sets this game apart. As simple as Riot’s recipe is, it’s a winning combination.
