One of the minds behind a beloved indie shooter is about to drop something very different, and momentum junkies should be paying attention. Vholume, a self-described “melancholic first-person parkour adventure,” lands on Steam on August 21 — just two weeks out. If you’ve ever lost hours to Mirror’s Edge, Hot Lava, or a well-built surf map, this is the indie release to bookmark.

The pedigree is the hook. Vholume comes from Léonard Lemaitre, one of the two brothers who created Straftat, the scrappy arena FPS that a lot of players (and the developers themselves) crowned as one of 2024’s best shooters. This time he’s part of a three-person team trading twitch gunfights for pure movement — and betting that flow, not firepower, can carry a whole game.

Movement First, in a Crumbling Brutalist City

Vholume drops you into a dystopian megacity choked by oppressive bureaucracy, then hands you the tools to slip through the cracks. You’ll wall-run, slide, and leap across overgrown, brutalist “jungle gyms,” hunting shortcuts and clean lines through environments designed to be read at speed. The aesthetic — cold concrete softened by creeping greenery — gives the traversal a melancholy weight that sets it apart from arcade-bright rivals. It’s parkour as quiet rebellion against a grey system, and that framing does real work.

Race Your Friends — or Their Ghosts

The feature likely to give Vholume legs is its multiplayer. You can race friends in real time or compete against their recorded ghosts, turning every route into a leaderboard puzzle. That’s the same replayability engine that keeps speedrun and surf communities alive for years, and it’s a smart, low-overhead way for a tiny team to build a sticky player base. A movement game succeeds or fails on how good it feels to shave a half-second off your best line, and ghost racing turns that obsession into a social loop.

Why This Indie Bet Is Worth Watching

There’s a business story tucked inside Vholume, too. A three-person studio pivoting from a proven FPS hit to a niche parkour game is a calculated risk — smaller addressable audience, but a passionate one that’s been underserved since Mirror’s Edge redefined first-person movement. A free demo is already available, which is exactly the right move: let the feel sell the game before launch. For indie developers, it’s a clean playbook — build on your reputation, pick a genre with loyal fans and little competition, and prove the core loop early. It’s the same instinct that drives standout indie shooters like Luna Abyss.

Whether Vholume becomes a cult favorite or a breakout will come down to level design and how deep that ghost-racing hook goes. But a movement-focused adventure from a developer with a track record for great game feel is a low-risk add to any wishlist. Mark August 21, and try the demo before then.
