Jagex just dropped the announcement a quarter-century of players has been quietly waiting for: RuneScape 4 is real. Revealed at the studio’s annual RuneFest convention, the working-titled sequel is a brand-new, full-fledged MMO built in Unreal Engine — and in a twist nobody saw coming, it grew out of a planned expansion for the survival spin-off RuneScape: Dragonwilds. It is still early in development, but the ambition is unmistakable, and for a franchise that has become a reliable revenue engine, this is the biggest swing Jagex has taken in years.

The pitch is simple on paper: bring the world of Gielinor into modern technology while keeping the depth, freedom, and community-led spirit that have defined RuneScape for 25 years.

From a Dragonwilds Expansion to a Full Sequel

The origin story is the most interesting part. RuneScape 4 reportedly started life as an expansion for Dragonwilds, the studio’s survival game. But playtesters kept circling back to the same request — they wanted a more traditional, MMO-style take on that setting and art style. Jagex listened, and a side project quietly ballooned into a standalone sequel. That is a rare example of a publisher letting player feedback redraw the roadmap rather than forcing content into a box it had already built.

There is a scheduling cost to that decision. The original Dragonwilds expansion was targeting 2027, but scaling it up into a full new game has almost certainly pushed that window back. Fans should treat RuneScape 4 as a long-term project, not a next-year release.

Unreal Engine and the Weight of 25 Years

Moving to Unreal Engine is the headline technical shift, and it is a pragmatic one. A modern, widely-adopted engine makes it far easier to hire experienced developers, ship across platforms, and deliver the visual leap players expect from a numbered sequel. The harder challenge is cultural: RuneScape’s magic has never been its graphics. It is the open-ended progression, the player-driven economy, and the community in-jokes built over two decades. Jagex has to modernize the look without sanding off the quirks that made Gielinor feel like home.

It also has to avoid cannibalizing itself. RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape both still command loyal, paying audiences, and a third live MMO under the same roof is a delicate balancing act for any studio’s business model.

RuneFest Confirmed Jagex Is Playing Offense

RuneScape 4 did not arrive alone. RuneFest also brought word of a RuneScape animated series in partnership with Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White, the launch of RuneScape Reignited on December 2, and a fresh roadmap for Old School RuneScape. Taken together, that is a studio expanding its oldest IP in every direction at once — new games, new media, new content — rather than coasting on nostalgia.

For entrepreneurs and anyone watching the games business, it is a textbook franchise play: protect the cash-cow live services, grow the brand beyond the client, and plant a flag on a modern-engine sequel that keeps the next generation of players inside the ecosystem. RuneScape 4 is years away, but the strategy behind it is already paying attention.
