Fan’s favorite actor, Henry Cavill, who shared their enthusiasm about Witcher has quit his role. With many rumors flying around, we are here to explain why:

Henry Cavill and the Witcher

The Netflix series “The Witcher” introduced us to our roving monster killer Geralt of Rivia in 2019. Henry Cavill, who portrayed this character, with white hair and strong golden eyes, had a wonderful demeanor. The actor was also a huge admirer of the books and video games. So, when he was cast in the series, his wish came true.

Cavill once acknowledged that this isn’t really a job to him, but rather the realization of his childhood dreams. Even his stunning co-star Freya Allan referred to him as “the Witcher’s encyclopedia.” When you enter something full of joy and hope, what can go wrong? Unfortunately, after the third season that will air in the summer of 2023, Henry will no longer play the role of Geralt. Instead, Liam Hemsworth will take on the reigns.

What Cavill had to say

Henry Cavill’s exit from the series, which made headlines, devastated The Witcher fans’ hearts. He convinced the audience that he was made for the character of Geralt of Rivia because of his intense passion for the story and the game. The 39-year-old celebrity used Instagram to share the information with his followers.

Some news to share from The Continent… My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.

Fans speculations about Henry quitting as the Witcher

The first speculation that was flying around was that Henry quit in order to star in the new Superman movie. Although, we don’t think that’s the case. Over the years, Cavill managed to fit in many other projects while filming the Witcher. Just recently, we saw Enola Holmes 2 premiere on the small screens. So, what happened then?

We, as well as a good portion of other fans, believe Netflix is here to blame. In an interview long back, Cavill said as long as the showrunners stay faithful to the source material, he will be more than happy to portray Geralt. The first season of the Witcher was somewhat similar to the books, excluding the bad casting. However, the second season was a disaster. A completely new storyline, more bad casting, and ruining the Yennefer character have probably pushed Cavill over the edge. Along with that, we got some sneak peeks into next season’s castings… And they’re terrible once again.

New Geralt of Rivia

The White Wolf will now be played by Liam Hemsworth. Cavill expressed his delight to see Hemsworth playing this intriguing role and announced that the Australian actor will take over the fourth season. However, fans aren’t too happy about this. A lot of them could only imagine Henry in this role and this change will be a problem for them. A good portion even said that they will no longer be watching the Witcher and expressed their grief and anger at Netflix. One product of that anger is this petition that was signed over 200000 times

How many more shows will Netflix ruin?

The Sandman finally appears on screens. Fans of Neil Gaiman’s legendary fantasy-horror comic book have been anticipating this day for roughly three decades. The comic book series lasted from 1989 to 1996, cracked the New York Times best-seller list, and inspired a vast array of spinoffs and sequels. They originally intended it to be a film. After that, it lingered in development hell as Hollywood continued to adapt other Gaiman books. Those include Coraline, Stardust, and How to Interact with Women at Parties. American Gods, Lucifer, and Good omens even appeared on screens. However, a number of Gaiman’s brilliant adaptations continued to fall short due to poor screenplays and creative disagreements.

The 10-episode Sandman series is now available on Netflix thanks to a contract negotiated by Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer (Foundation), and showrunner Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman). The show ended up being well worth the wait. Of course, though, certain people will never be happy. This is undoubtedly one of the best small-screen comic adaptations ever created. For that, we can thank clever acting, solid writing, and breathtakingly creepy noir-meets-horror production design that makes judicious use of digital effects.

What’s the story of Sandman about?

Dream (a touchingly vulnerable Tom Sturridge, most recently seen in HBO’s Irma Vep) is introduced to us in both the comic books and the television series on what must be the worst day of his everlasting life. In order to capture Death in an orb and make her follow their commands, members of an occult organization assembled in an English manor in 1916. Dream is the Endless they arrest instead because he has entered the waking world in search of a “rogue nightmare”. The nightmare is Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook), who amuses himself by wreaking havoc among humanity. So, Dream endures a torturous century in his cell. He is unable to give gifts to his captor for his release.

You threatened, cajoled and pleaded for gifts are neither mankind’s to receive nor mine to give. You had no thought for the harm you have brought to your world…

Lord, what fools these mortals be.

All of this basically serves as a prelude to Dream’s escape and return to his collapsing kingdom. He must reclaim three looted items which will help him reconstruct it. His aids are the most devoted deputy, dream librarian Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), and chirpy raven sidekick Matthew (voiced by Patton Oswalt). The first six episodes, which largely follow Preludes and Nocturnes, the first book of the comics, will literally take him through the gates of hell and back to Earth.

What this adaptation of Sandman has done right?

Casting!!!

This project has always required excellent casting, and Netflix’s The Sandman does not disappoint. Finding actors that resemble comic book characters the most isn’t always the best option. David Bowie’s big-haired, late-’60s folk singer phase was famously depicted to resemble Lucifer Morningstar, the mythical fallen angel who rules over hell. Here, the role is filled by the statuesque Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones, who, despite being a woman, perfectly captures Lucifer’s charming smugness. A very knowledgeable and peaceful interpretation of Death, who consoles the recently deceased and leads them on a route to the hereafter, is provided by Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

Bonus points go to whoever had the brilliant idea to portray John Cameron Mitchell, the creator of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, as the proprietor of a drag cabaret in Florida. In the midst of all the strangeness, Dream serves as something of a straight guy, yet Sturridge has just the right amount of baby face and scowl. It makes sense that he got the role above 200 other performers for the part.

Also, we must not forget Charles Dance (Tywin in GOT) once again plays the role of a ruthless father.

Masters of CGI

Theoretically, it should be simpler than ever to make a CGI-heavy genre program seem nice. However, even studios with enormous pockets of Marvel have had repeated failures in this area. Gary Steele, the production designer for Outlander, uses visual effects far more skillfully in The Sandman. In Dream’s realm, hell, and other supernatural locations, there are numerous landscapes that are obviously computer-created. For the most part, these parts appear purposefully animated, like incredibly detailed renditions of comic book art. While the waking world resembles our planet quite closely. This includes a greater density of bars, fast-food restaurants, and gloomy alleys.

Closing thoughts about the Sandman Netflix show

This first season has done everything that was expected of it. Clever writing, faithfulness to the original content, amazing CGI, and wonderful casting have all led to people being delighted with watching the show. Hopefully, in its progress, Sandman will only get better and better.

Arcane: League of Legends is an action/adventure tv show that was released in November of 2021. It was created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee for Netflix. Since its release, Arcane has become one of the most-watched shows with 72 million views. Pretty impressive, considering the show is a spin-off of a videogame. Along with League of Legends players, Arcane brought in a lot of fans that have never played the game before. So, what’s so special about the show?

How it all started

Well, the start was certainly the game itself. League of Legends is a widely popular MOBA videogame with an active esports community. In the gaming world, League has often been the punching bag of many jokes, especially regarding its fanbase. However, there is one thing no one could ever deny, League of Legends had amazing trailers. Watching the Worlds trailers made everyone excited to play. For forever basically, everyone was telling LoL to make their own show just like the trailers. Guess what? That’s exactly what they did.

What made Arcane stand out in a sea of televised videogame adaptations

Other than being a great show, Arcane really fixed the single mistake that most videogame adaptations have, and according to websites like BoostRoyal.de, the hit show brought many new players to the game. With Arcane, you do not need to know a single thing about League in order to enjoy the show. Most adaptations come with a mindset that you are familiar with all of the lore and all of the characters. Sadly, shows and films like that often flop. It was certainly true for the World of Warcraft movie. Even players who have played a game for years aren’t familiar enough with the story to enjoy the game. So, why does this happening? No one knows.

Plot of Arcane

Most tv shows usually have that one plotline sentence that makes the viewer interested. Well, that’s not the case with Arcane. Once you arrive in Piltover, you will feel as if that world has existed before and it will continue on existing after the show. We, as the viewer, follow different characters and their different lives that were influenced by the environment around them.

With that in mind, Arcane is quite similar to Game of Thrones. It’s not a never-seen innovative story that makes everyone’s jaws drop. It just does what it does masterfully.

Character-driven drama

The game developer’s and artist’s job when creating new characters for any videogame is to make the characters stand out from the ones inside their own game and the ones in other games. We have to say that Riot games does this masterfully. With over 100 champions, it must have been a hard task to make everyone not only look different but have a different personality as well.

This amazing variety also transferred to Arcane. We got to see many champions and their own backstories. However, along with them, there’s an entire cast of characters that aren’t in the actual game. What’s even more amazing is that there is no clear distinction between them. If you haven’t played League before, we are sure you won’t be able to tell the difference sometimes.

Along with these other positives, there’s even more! Oftentimes characters in media turn into cliche archetypes. However, that isn’t the case with Arcane. The makers of the show did a wonderful job at humanizing each character and making them feel as if they are real people.

Animation and Music in Arcane

They must have had a massive budget because the art and the animation are breathtaking. Riot certainly set the bar with their amazing cinematics, but they took it even further with Arcane. From just normal scenes to action-packed madness, this shows animation won’t leave you aloof. What’s also amazing is the music and honestly, the entire production.

Finishing thoughts

There’s unmatched attention to detail when it comes to Arcane. Everything was handled so beautifully and carefully. That includes characters, writing, animation, music, and production. They’ve certainly outdone themselves and it is safe to say that YES Arcane is worth watching!

Set in a world not too dissimilar to Europe during the middle ages, The Seven Deadly Sins anime is derived from a fantasy manga of the same name. Apart from the stand-out name, there are a number of reasons why you might want to watch it. There is something charming about a group of disbanded magical knights fighting to clear their names.

The main plot of Seven Deadly Sins

As it stands, the series plays out over five seasons and there are two films. So, there’s a lot of content for those who are interested in what has become one of the most popular anime series on Netflix. The story follows the life of Meliodas. He is the leader of a group of disavowed knights known for being framed for trying to plot a coup.

Known as The Seven Deadly Sins, our band of heroes is on a mission to liberate the kingdom of Liones from The Holy Knights. The knights are adversaries who started a rebellion and framed them in order to seize control of the kingdom of Britannia.

What are The Seven Deadly Sins?

Each one of the Deadly Sins carries a beast marking with a name that is symbolic of the crimes they were convicted of. However, they once dominated the kingdom of Brittania as the most powerful unit of the Holy Knights.

Characters and their sins

The main character Meliodas – bears the sin of wrath and is marked with a dragon.

Diane is marked by a serpent and carries its sin of envy. Then there’s Ban, who is marked by a Fox and carries the sin of greed. King carries the Grizzly’s sin of sloth while Gowther bares the goat’s sin of lust. Merlin, the most powerful mage in the kingdom, carries the Boar’s sin of gluttony. Lastly, Escanor bears Lion’s sin of pride.

Being that The Seven Deadly Sins is a series where the magic takes center stage, it should not be surprising that many of the characters in the series are in fact millennia old. Take Meliodas as an example; though he may not look the part, he has been alive for more than 3000 years.

As for the ages of the other Deadly Sins, Diane is far younger than Meliodas at 750 years. Ban has a more relatable age of 34. Gowther and King have also been alive for very long for over thousands of years. It is expected that a grand mage like Merlin will have many years behind him. That is exactly what we get here as he is also well experienced at 3000+ years old.

Closing

As noted above, The Seven Deadly Sins manga has been around for a while and as a result, has branched out to many films apart from the already numerous episodes. So it might be a good idea for viewers who are new to the series to get acquainted with it in chronological order, picking out a random episode may only result in confusion.

One cannot list a bunch of classic animé series without mentioning Cowboy Bebop. The groundbreaking Japanese animated series is so iconic that fans had mixed feelings about Netflix’s live-action adaptation.

One of the best animé series to come out of the ’90s, Cowboy Bebop – more than 20 years since it was first released – is still regarded as a groundbreaking anime television series. The series, especially the English dubbed version, is still regarded as an iconic series, and a great introduction to animé, in general.

The series follows the exploits of a crew of bounty hunters aboard a spacecraft, called the Bebop. The protagonists of this tale, Spike, Jet Black, and Faye each have a past they wish they could shake, in a series that explores loneliness and other existential issues.

The series, which saw great commercial – as well as, critical – success when it was first released in ’98 has captured the imagination for more than two decades. The cult classic recently had a live-action adaptation created by the streaming giant, Netflix. It has met with mixed responses but does speak to the anime series’ enduring appeal.

So What’s Cowboy Bebop?

Not everybody reading this post will be aware of what Cowboy Bebop is all about, so we ought to backtrack a tad and offer more information. Cowboy Bebop science fiction, western, film noir-inspired mash-up of an animé series that kind of cut its path in terms of genre.

The series first saw the light of day in 1998 and was created by an anime production studio, Sunrise. Shinichirō Watanabe was the director behind the series, while the series’ soundtrack was the creative contribution of composer Yoko Kanno.

Cowboy Bebop is set in the year 2071, in a world where humanity no longer lives on Earth, but is dispersed across the Solar System. One can imagine what a logistical nightmare law enforcement would be in that sort of reality, so the powers that reinstated the Bounty Hunter system.

Characters

The series follows the crew of a small rickety spacecraft known as the Bebop. Spike, Jet, Faye Valentine, Ed, and data dog, Ein. The team of bounty hunters each have a unique past, Spike Spiegel is a former hitman for the Red Dragon criminal organization. He has a rough history with a character named Julia.

Jet Black is a former police officer, while Faye – who joins the crew – is a con artist with amnesia. Ed is an eccentric girl with a talent for hacking, while Ein is a genetically-engineered Pembroke Welsh Corgi with human-level intelligence.

Story of Cowboy Bebop

The main story arc follows Spike’s bitter love triangle, between himself, the bombshell Julia, and ambitious gangster Vicious. However, the show allows one a glimpse into the pasts of the other characters. The circumstances behind Jet’s departure from law enforcement, Faye’s history as a young lady from the earth, cryogenically frozen to save her life. Even Ed’s weird meanderings.

The show explores several existential issues, with hunger being one of them. The series often sees the crew getting into a mishap that drains their funds, and they find themselves – quite often – having to go without essentials; food, vital ship parts, fuel.

Most of the tale’,s focus, however, is given to Spike’s former gang life. He and Julia fell in love while he was a hitman for the Red Dragon crime syndicate. Except she was the girlfriend of a former friend, Vicious. They had planned to escape the gang life to be together but Vicious found out about the affair and blackmailed Julia into killing Spike.

To get out of going through with it, she goes into hiding, while Spike fakes his death and goes into exile. Things between him and his past come to a head when he reunites with his sweetheart, and our broody protagonist finds himself making very personal decisions.

Cowboy Bebop has been successful in Japanese and Western markets, particularly the United States. It explores the concepts of existentialism, loneliness, and a past that just won’t let you go through its characters. The series has been one of the past 2 decade’s gateway series into the world of anime.

Live-Action TV Series

Announced as far back as 2017, the live-action adaptation by Netflix – released in 2021 – was criticized for not carrying the general mood of the animé effectively. Though the Netflix version of Cowboy Bebop, starring John Cho, and Mustafar Shakir kept true to the original anime, in terms of Music. The stretched episodes – for some reason – made for a more playful series.

In Closing

Cowboy Bebop is a classic, no doubt about that. Most animé fans will have a story of the first encounter with the series. Whether one familiarizes themselves with the live-action version or not, they would probably be doing themselves a great disservice by not checking out the original anime.

Stop reading the Squid Game series review and go watch it; Without looking at more pictures, official trailers, or any other text about it. Regardless of any respectable opinion you may have about the whole work, this South Korean series includes minutes that you most likely do not want to miss on a personal experience; Sequences are so calculated and special that they do not easily leave the viewer’s mind at all.

During the best minutes of the best episodes, the powerful writing of the Squid Game series pushes the audience step by step towards questions that are no longer about the characters. Rather, they take root in the human mind and pressure it with the thought that if it was in a certain situation like the characters, what moral boundaries would it really go through with the instinct of survival? Revealing the secrets of the Squid Game series to the audience can make sure that they are not affected by the mainshock of some of these key moments and never have a part of a special and powerful experience. Is the series worth watching for a while if some points of the story are leaked? Certainly. But if you can, more or less close your eyes to the sea.

This is where one of the biggest strengths of the Squid Game series comes into play; Exemplary fit between content and content distribution platform. The storyline of the Squid Game series is such that a detailed and costly advertising campaign can seriously damage it. On the other hand, if a Korean series started airing in the country of manufacture and then had the opportunity to go to different platforms in different countries with local success, again, everyone would talk about its story in detail, and a limited number of viewers would succeed. They were touching on the main experience.

Netflix Squid Game Series with 9 episodes with different durations is a clear example of producing the right content for the right platform.

So there was really no better way to detonate such a bomb than a sudden, silent broadcast from an online network of about 210 million subscribers around the world. Netflix needs something like the Squid Game series to thrill and keep its subscribers, and a non-English-language build like the Squid Game series needs to reach the audience through such a platform to be as successful as possible.

The audience can easily go to the online network in question just by hearing the name of a work or seeing its poster a few times, and the main experience is presented to them. Interestingly, Netflix’s stream-centric online network also officially finds, with minimal advertising costs, that external work is on the verge of a major record-breaking event. It remains to be seen how much more flexibility an online network will have over the course of each episode in favor of the series’ writers.

This type of broadcast is especially suitable for a work that completely accompanies the audience during the very first episode. The Squid Game series not only quickly evokes the audience’s sympathy with the main character and worries us about him, but with the first episode, it manages to put various questions in the audience’s mind. Thus, when the first part of Squid Game is over, we both know the main character, we know how much he needs to earn money, and we know what terrible obstacles are in the way of his attempt to reach his goal. The author is well acquainted with the principles of creating a compelling drama for the audience.

Meanwhile, the viewer has so many questions about the main story that he can not stop watching the work. Because the situation of the characters is unusual and very different from what happens in the real world. But their pains are understood by humans. Because in different modern societies, financial problems have different manifestations and the very high and intense need of people for money has sometimes led them to do the most insane things. Poverty and pain are easily placed under the various layers of the Squid Game series. So it is not difficult to understand many of these people.

But the story does not end well with the script. Much of the power of Squid Game comes from throwing the audience in a timely and accurate manner from the ordinary world into an environment created for insane experiences. If the scene design of the series was not so detailed and exciting, Squid Game might not take the viewer to its fictional world so much.

The product art directing team has an exemplary understanding of the principles of costume design. Therefore, by remembering exaggerated and strange some of the narrative ideas of the work, it shapes the world in front of the audience with a minimalist design. Playgrounds, masks with triangular, circular, and square markings, clothes limited to a handful of colors, and a few very large rooms free of complex architecture are all designed to look special, to influence the engaging atmosphere, and not to be difficult for the audience to understand. . The formation of such an organization may seem illogical. But the audience’s mind easily accepts the space and time drawn in front of their eyes.

Avoiding the use of extra elements in a variety of manufacturing sectors, including makeup, will increase your and your attention to detail. When we are accustomed to seeing a large absolutely white wall for two days, on the third day we quickly notice the smallest black spot attached to it. As a result, even outside the script, Squid Game takes us step-by-step into its mysterious yet believable labyrinth. Of course, most of the dialogues are very well written and most of the actors play their roles well. But if the viewer did not subconsciously accept the possibility of being in this situation, he probably would not have replaced the characters so much and would not have been involved in strange questions many times.

In fact, the excellent visual storytelling of the series is closely linked to the same principles observed for the construction of various elements of its various scenes. Because, for example, this simple and at the same time precise design makes the author not have to explain annoying and detailed issues such as the hierarchy of power of the organizing team.

Ironically, the pinnacle of the Squid Game series may have originated from this storytelling, devoid of clear riddles. Of the few snippets that can be made of this 50-year-old Huang Dong-hyuk, it’s the only answer to too many questions in limited sections, such as the second half. Whereas when the ending of the first episode of Squid Game nailed us, we practically only witnessed strange things happening in a large and believable space. Such an experience is tied to the fact that the audience can repeatedly ask in their minds, “What would I do if I were really one of these people?”

(From now on, the article will spoil parts of the story of 9 episodes of the Squid Game series)

The result of all this is that when Gganbu, the 6th episode of Squid Game, airs, the audience is challenged not only emotionally but also with their thoughts. Apparently, only a few people are playing marbles in an artificial environment. But the viewer in his mind is going through the list of different people with whom he might have entered such a situation. How far did we go to survive? How many people in our lives would we really want to lose to in these seconds in a game with marbles? Is lying in that valley morally wrong at all?

These shocking questions are not going to be answered. The viewer of the Squid Game series is not going to enter such a competition tomorrow. But aren’t we trying to win the same game every day? How many people lie every hour to improve their financial situation and write it down to human natural struggle for survival? How many people in the community face the right human treatment every day because of financial problems, in an ugly way practically less than the rich? The problem is not that people will start a deadly tug-of-war to win money tomorrow. But you know very well that if such a competition is held, a very, very large number of people will not hesitate to pull the strings.

Humans have been involved in such games since childhood. Many children who win in children’s games have better feelings than regular losers; However, the difference between them may be entirely related to their different family financial situations. One child has grown up with good nutrition and good exercise facilities, and another suffers from malnutrition. How many times will the first child win and the second child lose?

Many of the accepted values in modern societies, which strongly influence the moment-by-moment lives of different people, are simply the result of comparisons of different people. From simple concepts such as “being the first student” which refers to the fact that all other students in the class are inferior to one student to “being rich” which is practically valued at not having other people’s money. Why can the owner of an account filled with 100 billion dollars of money practically live like a king? Because almost all other people’s accounts do not have even one-hundredth of this money. While humans claim to be 100% related to a person’s success based on his or her personal efforts in life, the reality is that without the failure of 10 other humans, there will be no meaningful success in modern society.

“Having” in today’s world is synonymous with “not having” other human beings. So we are playing these games every day. We pull the rope as tightly as possible so that everyone can touch us. But in fact, people encourage us when we look at the corpses of people who pulled the rope. Everyone wants to get the most marbles every day; Regardless of the fact that another person can only have a stone instead of marble and only wait for the end of his life with extreme fear.

Squid Game is not without flaws and dramatizes the situation at times like voting time to end matches. There was no need for the voting to go on until the last person and so on. Also, the series over-explains itself, especially during the final 30 minutes. Perhaps if the story had ended with the same bitter frame of the man’s destruction next to the mother’s corpse, the audience would have had more opportunity for theorizing and the semantic power of the work would have increased. Some story holes are also seen by some viewers during this 9-part storytelling.

But the principle of experience really deserves respect and impact. Because it is a serious reminder and warning; To the hundreds of millions of people like me who do not realize how much they have worked for the successes that are linked from zero to one hundred to the failure of tens of other people. Many deaths occur in the Squid Game series and a lot of blood is shed. But some of the scariest moments take place outside the island.

Players escape the filth and horror of the tournament; To return to their scarier lives! A girl who has no way to find her mother and get her brother out of the orphanage. A man who soon loses his office forever, and if he does not make enough money within a month, his organs are sold. A person who seems to be successful and is drowning in such filth that he does not dare to look directly into the eyes of his old mother. An immigrant whose wife and young child continue to live in despair. Which life ?! Get out of the games to achieve what? The minimum rules and challenges of the game are clear. In the real world, different people are finding new ways to hurt people.

Various things, from simple, popular police plots to the detailed introduction of different types and varieties of gray characters, have made Squid Game series have a chance to communicate with different people. Of course, games are not fair either. A doctor who, in collaboration with some of the performers, obtains information about the games, destroys their fairness. A strong man who has the ability to kill others has a better chance of winning on his own. Even here, a perfectly fair competition does not take place without predictable results.

The show from South Korea certainly did not achieve the current huge success for no reason

Worst of all, the main organizer, Front Man, is just talking about fair play. Competition controllers do not care about holding fair competitions anywhere in the world. They just gesture it. They have fun entertaining people. Just think about who the main winners of many of the tests that take place around the world are. Hundreds of thousands who are not accepted, the few who get the top rankings, or those who have received money from individual winners and losers as the cost of the event?

Of course, the organizers of Squid Game competitions do not need money and meet other unnatural needs. When they want to, there is nothing wrong with a violent killer man removing a player with his power. When they want to, a man familiar with glass must lose the ability to recognize the right glass. When they feel like it, after the end of the competition, in a completely unfair way, they break the broken glass of the players’ bodies.

We, humans, are constantly pushed into competitions that seemingly give different people a chance to win. The organizers also keep the general effect, and if someone happens to really win, they give him prizes. But when the experience of “green light, red light” or when trying to cross the fragile bridge, a bitter reality is slapped on the face of the audience; We are struggling to win a title in a competition where on paper all participants may lose.

Drifting Dragons is one of the latest series’ to premiere on Netflix as part of their push into the anime space. The television series is based on a Mac of the same name that was first released in 2016.

Drifting Dragons – television production – is a product of Polygon Pictures, who are also the production house behind Knights of Sidonia. However – unlike its predecessor series- Drifting Dragons is not a sci-fi epic, instead it leans more towards the side of steampunk. According to Crunchyroll, a reliable source of Anime news and content, this anime offers the viewer a “culinary fantasy-adventure”.

The story plays out in a world with a somewhat feudal setting, where the trading routes between distant pockets of humanity are maintained by massive blimp-like airships. Coincidentally, these same airships are used for hunting dragons – a big part of this story.

The series follows the life of Takita – the main character and newest member of one of the last draking-ships (dragon hunting as it’s known in the series), the Quin Zaza, as she and the rest of the crew members harpoon and butcher gigantic flying beasts (not too dissimilar to whaling) to sell and stay fed.

Drifting Dragons Episode by Episode

In terms of world building, one can only call it stellar work. The pilot episode does inspire curiosity about the flying beasts, which play a central role in the story. Interestingly, the dragons in this series are not quite the reptilian beasts that we normally see on our screens. Instead, they look more like the mythical creatures you’d see in a Mizayaki production.

It follows the day to day happenings the Quin Zaza, a draking-ship manned by an ensemble cast where Mika – who is a skilled dragon hunter tasked with showing the Takita the newcomer the art of draking – is the only character (apart from Takita) who truly stands out. He also happens to have some kind of a spiritual connection with the dragons, and also happens to be a terrific cook.

Which takes us to another strange part of this series. Just about every episode involves the cooking of some kind of dragon meat dish. Interestingly, one never gets a true idea of how this dragon meat might taste. One ought to take note that the show does take its time to settle into its strange groove.

The series does have great subtitles – for those who prefer to watch anime in Japanese – and has an equally good English dub, making it a lot more child friendly.

Conclusion

Drifting Dragons had much hype behind it prior to its release and the show does have the ingredients of what could be a great animated television production. However, it is a little disappointing that the show finds itself lacking the dramatic tension it ought to have. Cookie-cutter characters and a narrative with wobbly consistency also way the show down.

In a nutshell, Drifting Dragons hasn’t done too well at blending life drama and full on action the way it should have. This makes it a lot less enthralling than one might have anticipated. However, the fact that there is no villain in the story might do the series a lot of good – if it’s kept that way.
