hit Role Playing Game (RPG) series, Diablo is set to make its official debut in mobile with the release of Diablo Immortal during the first half of 2022 as a free-to-play Massive Multiplayer Online Action Role-playing Game. Here’s everything there is to know about the latest installment of the franchise.

Controversial release of Diablo Immortal

Quite some time has passed since Blizzard first publicized the development and planned release of Diablo Immortal Back at BlizzCon 2018. That announcement didn’t go down too well with most fans. However, many seem to have softened their stance and developed a genuine interest.

The emotional responses are to be expected when considering the success of the Diablo franchise. This adds an extra bit of pressure on developers who will have to work to satisfy the desires of their veteran audience. At the same time, they will need to try to pull in new players.

Alpha demo and beta testing of Diablo Immortal

In order to get this right, Blizzard Entertainment and its partner in the development of Diablo Immortal – NetEase Games – went straight to the players for advice. This was done via an exclusive public alpha demo of the game that ran from December 2020 to January 2021. The Android exclusive beta testing went live on the 28th of October 2021.

“At the end of our Technical Alpha, we looked at every single piece of feedback we got … We basically did a summit where we had all the team on a Zoom, and I was sharing my screen, and we just went line-by-line” started Diablo Immortal’s lead game producer, Caleb Arseneaux.

The Plot and Gameplay

The timeline of Diablo Immortal’s story is set 5 years after Diablo 2, but well prior to the start of Diablo 3. This nestles the title nicely into the existing storyline. In staying true to the games that came before Diablo Immortal, it is from interacting with the wise old man, Deckard Cain, that players learn of their quest. Their job is to locate and destroy pieces of the World Stone in order to prevent the impending disaster.

The graphics are better than those of Diablo 2. However, one shouldn’t expect a Diablo 3 level of sleekness to them. Diablo Immortal players will have six character classes to choose from and the game will also feature new areas. Furthermore, being an MMO title means that this version of Diablo will naturally have a greater focus on the multiplayer side of things. Hopefully, this won’t disturb the single-player value that the Diablo series has always had.

Closing notes

It is quite interesting that a game that was initially so harshly received that it even negatively affected Activision’s stocks is now one of the most anticipated titles. It’s also great to see developer teams that actively engage in discussions with the gaming community to develop products that the consumers want. Let’s hope that the democratic approach to game development leads to fruitful results.

Supercell, responsible for such titles as Clash of Clans, and Clan Battle, released an online multiplayer shooter back in 2018. Similar in format to League of Legends, and Overwatch, Brawl stars has players battle it out in teams. But has the fun and colorful design that the studio is known for.

What is Brawl Stars all about?

Working in teams of three, players duke it out with members of opposing squads in various modes of play, in order to fulfill an objective. Each player picks out a Brawler to control. Two of the same Brawlers can’t on the same squad though.

The Android, and iOS compatible title, Brawl stars can be unlocked through gameplay, or purchased in the in-game store. Players can also unlock skins to personalize their gaming experience.

Brawl stars Gamemodes

There are several modes that players can choose from to participate in the action. Each of them has a team size limit and different objectives. Brawl Pass is pretty much a campaign mode, where players must compete for game-for-game along a set trajectory.

Power league has a ranking system that adds a more competitive feel to the gameplay. Unlocked after 4500 trophies are collected, this mode can be played solo, or within teams of 3. Winners are decided in a best-of-three format, and draws aren’t counted.

Seasons

The title is updated in season, which sees additional Brawlers, in-game functionality, or items added with each season. The first Brawl Pass came with the addition of Brawler Gale, while the following update introduced Surge, and Brawler Collete – along with a Gift shop and Brawler Pins (emoji’s that can be used in-game). Then came the third season – called Welcome to Star Park.

Colonel Ruffs, Belle, Griff, and Buzz we’re introduced with subsequent additions to the game. The latest update, Season 8: Once Upon A Brawl, debuted Brawler Ash to the in-game world, as well as a new Solo Showdown mode. In the game mode, Brawlers defeat other Brawlers to earn trophies. They also lose a trophy for every loss they incur.

Supercells decisions

As previously mentioned, the game was developed to be similar, in play, to Overwatch and Leagure of Legends, but Supercell stripped away all of the bells and whistles and kept it simple in look and feel. The decision for this was precipitated by the fact that the game house wanted to keep the title mobile-friendly.

Supercell did their best to keep giving it a unique feel, although battle-royal elements were introduced. The title went through extensive Beta testing in 2017 and only became available for worldwide consumption at the end of 2018. Though it debuted to mixed criticism, Brawl Stars has gone on to capture the hearts of over 200 million players in 2018 who propelled to the position of the second-highest-grossing game of 2020

Closing thoughts

Many battle-royale genre fans criticized the game’s map for showing displaying all players clearly. Leaving out the tension that comes from wondering how your next opponent might come at you. However, it also adds a good amount of old-school arcade nostalgia in doing so. The title was stripped down to fit mobile, and it does a good job of delivering simple, on-the-go, fun.

Over the years, the RPG (role-playing game) genre brought out some of the most memorable titles with a depth in their storytelling that keeps their fans enchanted for ages. Now that same authentic RPG experience has become available for mobile devices.

It was only a few years ago that mobile devices could not yet support the hardware demands of these games and the RPG experience was still mostly reserved for PC and console. However, that has changed drastically as mobile technology has become advanced enough for a gaming experience beyond Angry Birds and the like. Today, the mobile gaming market is awash with RPG titles – both good and bad.

Thankfully, in this list, we zero in on the best of the lot. However, one should note that the majority of them do not follow the principles of Free-to-Play and will require a little capital contribution before you can start playing. Nevertheless, they’re all worth every penny you put in. Without further ado, here are the best RPGs you can download and play on Android and IOS devices – in no particular order.

Final Fantasy RPG

First on the list is the latest installment of one of the most iconic RPG sagas of all time, Final Fantasy. This series has not been shy of going full throttle into the mobile gaming market with the developer, Square Enix, making a plethora of originals and spin-offs available for mobile.

The Final Fantasy series has always had a little something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of futuristic sci-fi or the medieval type of fantasy. Getting access to this on your mobile could cost as much as $21. However, with these being full games that cut a share upwards of 2GIGs of your device’s storage space, the asking price might not be that unreasonable.

Baldur’s Gate

Baldur’s Gate is another classic of the RPG genre that has been reborn in the era of mobile gaming. Many years after the original was praised as the title that initiated the RPG renaissance of 1998, the game remains a solid choice for anyone who enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons.

In its mobile version, the game retains the classical approach to the RPG genre, where players are sent off on a quest that sees them taking on mythical beasts, brewing potions, and collecting special items. The one downside is that the game is better experienced via tablet or flagship phones with bigger screens as the text and menu controls may be a little too small on a smaller screen. Getting started on Baldur’s Gate carries a cost of $10.

Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time & Space RPG

Another Eden is a product of the writers Masato Kato and Yasunori Mitsuda, a respected duo that has worked together on other successful titles like Chrono Trigger.

This time, the collaborative effort brings a game with a fairly simple plot. However, the game’s strong focus on time-traveling makes for an enthralling experience.

The game was originally published in 2016 and was updated as recently as April this year. What’s more, is that this title was never ported from other platforms to mobile. Another Eden is an RPG that was planned and developed for mobile gaming. The game is Free-to-Play and has in-app purchases.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II

Knights of the Old Republic 2 is a sequel to the game that brought the full KOTOR experience to our mobile phones. Though a large download at 2.4GB, Knights of the Old Republic is an embodiment of the classical Star Wars RPG brought to your phone.

Just like the first one, this game allows players to choose their own path. The story is a continuation from where the first KOTOR left off and costs $10 to download.

Genish Impact

This is probably the easiest release on the list. Genish Impact’s gameplay is built around a party based fighting system where elemental powers are incorporated and switching between different characters is key to winning. The game is in some ways reminiscent of the Zelda games.

With vast maps to explore, Genish Impact is quite an enjoyable mobile RPG experience. However, being a free-to-play offering comes with its own issues. Namely, the gacha mechanics that have become synonymous with F2P gaming.

Mobile gaming has been a hot topic for a number of years now, owing to its rapid growth. Add some technological advances, and environmental factors, and the trajectory looks to be sturdy in its upward move. So what are the trends we can expect to see more of?

Thanks to the accessibility of mobile phones, as opposed to PC’s and consoles, the mobile gaming segment has been the biggest beneficiary of the pandemic fueled growth of gaming to $174.9 billion in total revenue during 2020.

Having brought in revenues of over $77 billion during the course of the last fiscal year, the mobile focused front of the gaming industry has also benefited a great deal from its own dynamism in affording developers a cost-effective and time-efficient route from concept to market.

These factors have led to the proliferation of certain trends in the mobile gaming sector in recent months. Moreover, some of these trends have the potential to have a long lasting impact on the mobile gaming environment. Let’s take a look at some of these trends and what influence they might have on the direction of mobile gaming in the years to come.

Increased Adoption of 5G

Though the deployment of 5G technology was, for the most part, put on hold during the height of the Covid-19, one can expect to see a steady rise in adoption during 2021 as governments and economies see increased stability

This growth in the uptake of 5G infrastructure holds a lot of promise for mobile gaming. The lower latency and faster data transfer speeds should result in better gaming experience – from download times, to significantly reduced lag during multiplayer gaming.

There are a host of other benefits that could come from this. 5G infrastructure coupled with an upsurge in modern, high performance, mobile phone adoption may work to incentivise developers to put out more polished online gaming experiences for mobile players.

Gaming-as-a-Service Poised to See More Growth

As the lines between console and mobile gaming phone become blurred even further, one can expect to see increased use of services like Google’s Stream, and Microsoft’s Stadia as mobile gaming migrates to the cloud.

The greatest benefit that this will have for mobile gamers is being given the ability to take advantage of the cloud servers for graphics, AI, and some of the CPU’s processing work – lowering the hardware threshold for playing titles with higher demands. However, the technology may still be a few years away from universal adoption.

Except More Social Features

As mankind is a species that thrives in social groups, it was only natural that social distancing in the physical world would have an impact on how we interact on the internet, and gaming was no exception to this.

Besides the more spoken of Travis Scott Astronomical event, and the Lil NasX concert, there is noticeable growth in the use of in-game lobby areas where players mingle and show off their gear. One major title that seems to have identified this trend is Call of Duty Mobile.

The Success of Genshin Impact Being Blueprint For Others

A blazing success that captured the attention of gamers across multiple platforms, the accomplishments of Genshin Impact on mobile could have far reaching “impact” on mobile gaming.

Genshin Impact is a masterful blend of monetization and a console-like gaming experience on mobile that is sure to have rival game development studios in its native China and abroad scrambling in an attempt to replicate this potent combination.

Challenges To App Store Distribution Policies

The growth of mobile gaming as a serious revenue generator seems to have shifted the balance of power between developers and app distribution platforms like Apple’s App Store.

This is evidenced by the recent court battle between Apple and Epic, resulting in Apple’s introduction of the App Store’s Small Business Program, which sees Apple reducing its usual 30% take from developers who make less than $1 million annually to 15%.

Apple is not the only corporation to have recently experienced some disturbances as a result of this trend. In China, there were reports of a revenue related squabble between Huawei and Tencent that resulted in all of the developers’ games being removed from Huawei’s all store for a brief period.

To make matters worse for the app stores, both regions have seen an increase in cloud gaining services successfully circumventing app store restrictions. One example being GeForce’s Safari based cloud gaming platform. While in China, developers look to independent release as the best solution to revenue tug of war.
