Zoom currently employs industry standard encryption to secure user communications. All encryption is based on AES-GCM technology, with 256-bit keys. Incorporating Keybase’s expert team of engineers – who have live and breathed encryption for the past six years – into the Zoom team is expected to be a boon for the communication platform. The move, Zoom hopes, will enable the video conferencing giant to scale their security to match their current user base.

The firm will be borrowing heavily from Keybase’s encryption infrastructure, not only to add new bells and whistles to the Zoom platform, but also to make their encryption processes less centralized. Zoom encryption is currently executed by a central server system

Future iterations of the conferencing platform will feature a system that generates ‘public cryptographic identities’ for logged-in user, which will be stored in a repository on the Zoom network (Zoom may be hinting at going decentralized). Users will then be able to use said identities to establish ‘trust relationships’ with meeting attendees. By this, Zoom aims to improve attendee authentication process in order to better secure private communications, while eliminating the risk of sensitive information falling to an unauthorized third party.

Zoom offers it’s 300+ million strong user base (including executives of some of the world’s largest companies) as crisp video experience, and will soon offer top grade encryption for global captains of industry.

In addition to letting readers in on internal plans for the near future, Zoom reiterated their commitment to ensuring that their platform is never used for nefarious activity. The firm also intends to enhance malicious use reporting through collaboration with it’s.

The platform also restated it’s commitment to never eavesdropping on user conversations, or developing a mechanisms to decrypt live meetings to allow law enforcement access to information shared in those discussions. They also refuted rumors that they can insinuate members of Zoom staff into user meetings

As a show of their dedication to remaining transparent, Zoom will be publishing a draft of the cryptographic infrastructure they plan to implement. They aim to subject the proposal to public scrutiny and rework it in accordance with feedback. Reminiscent of the white-paper era of the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry.

While it is, as yet, unclear how the acquisition may affect Keybase, in the long term, it is abundantly clear that Zoom is preparing for a future with significantly less real-life human interaction. As a result of the global Covid-19 lockdown, Zoom has experienced a spike in user numbers in recent months, along with a shift in overall user demographics.

The announcement to halt the giveaway program came via a blog post on December 13 of 2019.

“Today, Friday the 13th, we’ve begun distributing the final 100 million Lumens among all qualifying members. The total giveaway amount will have been 300 million Lumens (approximately $16,000,000 USD).” read the post.

Prior to the entry of spam accounts, both Stellar and Keybase received positive feedback from the media and the general public. Keybase saw thousands of new registrations, while Stellar benefited in the form of good press.

Then Things Started To Change

Before a user account was cleared to participate in the airdrops, it would have to go through a number of checks to verify whether or not it is an actual user account (all accounts that had joined Keybase prior to the airdrop were taken as being authentic). The parameters of the airdrop also considered Github and Hacker News user accounts authentic, because both have a “high-quality” user base.

However, it is likely because of this that the airdrop program was compromised by spammers. Though the amount of Lumens allocated for individual user was negligible, a spammer in control of a vast bot net would be able to make these drops a more lucrative endeavour for themselves.

According to Coindesk, spammers where able to take advantage of this by gaining control of multiple dormant user accounts on Github and Hacker News. Spammers used bot farms in control of a multitude of user accounts to by pass the account verification methods that had been put in place.

For the end phase of the airdrop program, Keybase opted to add SMS authentication, and a number of other filtration tools to verify the legitimacy of a user account. Of the new sign ups, approximately 150 000 passed the check. That said it is still extremely difficult for Keybase to determine exactly how many spammer initiatives actually made it through undetected.

Max Krohn, CEO of Keybase, pointed out that regions like Nigeria and Latin America are hot spots for these sorts of activities. As these areas have limited, and less developed, internet infrastructure, tracking distinct signals for the purpose of analysis is a lot harder.

Conclusion

The XLM airdrop program seem to have been a bitter sweet endeavour. On the one hand, it achieved exactly what it was supposed to achieve, Keybase gained more users while Stellar benefited from build greater awareness of its operations. On the other hand, the entry of spammers could really do a lot in the way degrading the user experience on the Keybase app.

However, at the end of it all the main objectives of the partnership where achieved.

“It was really an interesting experiment, in the end, it definitely achieved the goal of getting more numbers onto Keybase and more people onto Stellar.” Krohn said.

Enabling the Keybase wallet to hold assets in addition to Stellar Lumen.

This tutorial shows, in simple steps, how to add a trustline to the Keybase wallet using the tools provided by the Stellar website.

Why add trustlines to the Keybase wallet?

The wallet built into the Keybase app holds Stellar Lumens (XLM). To hold other assets in the wallet, it is necessary to add a trustline for that asset. Other assets may include other crypto currencies, such as Ethereum (ETC) and Bitcoin (BTC). Also included in other assets can be fiat currencies such as EUR and USD, using asset tokens.

The Stellar Consensus Protocol allows tokens for any asset which can be bought, sold, and owned. Something as global as gold and silver, or something as local as BerkShares. Once a trustline is established for them, the tokens representing that asset can be held in your Keybase wallet.

The built-in system and its limitations

The wallet in the Keybase app has the ability to add trustlines to the account built in. Unfortunately, for an emerging, or unknown asset, adding a trustline is not always possible using that option. The main Stellar website has a tool to accomplish this, as long as someone has issued a token on the Stellar Consensus Protocol to represent that asset.

Security Warning

Using the tools on the Stellar website requires you to enter your Keybase wallet’s secret key. With the Keybase wallet, or any other wallet, you are the bank. All the crypto value of your wallet is locked behind the secret keys of that wallet. Protect that secret key like you would the keys to a vault.

There are some simple things you can do to help keep your secret key secret in this process.

• Do not have anyone watching over your shoulder or viewing your screen/li>
• Verify, twice, that the Stellar site is using HTTPS
• Use the private, or incognito, mode for your browser
• Open exactly one tab and close the browser once you are done
• Use the built in “copy-to-clipboard” button in Keybase or copy paste commands if you are using other wallets rather than trying to retype the secret key

What we will be doing

In this tutorial we will be adding our token BIZZNERD

Asset name: BIZZNERD
Issuer address: GCQNVHELB3XKDBGXVWFUY2BAD5GEDGODE2SERS7R73LBXE2724PFFZAG

Any asset or token listed with Stellar can be added using this method, including ones which can be added using the built in controls of the Keybase wallet.

How to add a trustline?

You will need to have both your web browser, and your Keybase app open. It is easier to do this using the desktop version of the app. It is possible to use the mobile version of the app as well, just not as easy to manage the multiple windows needed.

Build the transaction to add a trustline

Connect to the Stellar public network in Transaction Builder

Stellar provides a set of pages, called the “Laboratory” for dealing with the network without an additional program. There are two networks, testing and public. The testing network allows developers to try different things without creating real transactions on the ledger. The public network is the “real” network, were everything goes into the ledger, and becomes a part of the record. The Transaction Builder is the tool where we need to begin.

Open the browser in a private window and go to the address https://stellar.org/laboratory.

Check that your browser indicates that it is a secure site, usually a lock icon in the address bar.
Look for the lock icon, often green, in the address bar.
If not STOP! Find out why your connection is not secure and try again.

Do not continue without a secure, HTTPS, session!

Check the top right corner of the web page to be sure you are not on the test network.

If you are, then click on the “Public” button to switch to the live system.

Click the link to the “Transaction Builder”

Next we have to gather the information about the transaction we want to build and enter it into the form provided.

Enter your Stellar Address

Adding a trustline to your wallet has to be connected to your Stellar address. That address has to be entered into the form.

Just copy paste your Wallet address, and if you are using Keybase app follow these steps.

Switch to the Keybase app and open your wallet.

In the right corner of your wallet you will find setting options.Click that to open the setting for the wallet, which includes the public and secret keys for your account.

Click on the clipboard icon next to the box with your Stellar Address. This will automatically copy your Stellar address to the clipboard.

Return to the Transaction Builder in your browser.

Fill out the “Source Account” field

Paste the just copied address in the Source account field.

Generate a sequence number

Every transaction on the Stellar network must have a sequence number. The sequence number is associated with the account, and should always be 1 greater than the current number. Knowing what that number is, when many things can affect it, is impractical for most people. The Transaction Builder can look up the current sequence number and automatically fill in the new value for you. In next step just press link “Fetch next sequence number for account starting with …”.

Enter the information about the trustline to create

Find the “Operation Type” field, and click on the “Select operation type” dropdown.

Select “Change Trust” from the dropdown. Do not get this confused with the “Allow Trust” which is a different thing.
New fields are added to the Transaction Builder form based on the operation type selected. The Change Trust operation requires information about the asset to be trusted. Asset names can be long, or short, with the long version having a limit of 12 characters and the short version having a limit of 4 characters.

The asset selected for this tutorial, BIZZNERD, obviously will not fit in a 4 character field, so we need to select the “Alphanumeric 12” button.

Click on the “Alphanumeric 12” button

In the Asset Code text box, enter the code for the asset, BIZZNERD for this tutorial.
In the Issuer Account ID text box, enter the account number for the asset, GCQNVHELB3XKDBGXVWFUY2BAD5GEDGODE2SERS7R73LBXE2724PFFZAG for this tutorial.
Add finally enter the asset Issuer Account ID.

The Asset information should now look like this.

The other two fields, Trust Limit and Source Account, remain blank.

Set the time bounds

The transaction we are building can be set to happen at a specific time, and can be set to expire at a later time. The later upper bound is not when an offer, or some other transaction is cancelled, it is when this operation is no longer valid. If, for some reason, there is enough network traffic that this transaction is not executed within the upper limit set, it will simply not be executed and never be added to the ledger.
When adding a trustline, this may not be so important, but for other operation types it could be significant. As a standard habit to develop, we can set an upper time bound now anyway. It has even been made real simple, by adding a button to set the time to 5 minutes from now. Even though this is a tutorial, and could be slow to work through, it should be done in 5 minutes or less, so click the handy button to “Set to 5 minutes from now.”

Sign and submit the transaction

At this point the transaction has been successfully created.

The Transaction builder says that the transaction still needs to be signed before it can become part of the ledger.

Load the Transaction Signer page

After building a transaction, the next step is to sign the transaction. There is even a handy button to take us to the Transaction Signer page. Click the button “Sign in Transaction Signer” and the next web page is ready to use.

Sign with your Wallet Secret Key

Go to your wallet and copy your secret key. Keybase and other wallet gives you an additional reminder about the importance of your secret key. That is really important that you check everything, before adding any trustline. Once someone has your secret key can do whatever he wants with all your assets on Stellar Blockchain.

Return to the Trasaction Signer page in your browser. Double check, one more time, that it is a secure connection. This is the last chance to protect your secret key.

Paste your secret key into the Add Signer box. You only need to do it once.

Submit the transaction to the ledger

The transaction is now signed, and ready for the next step.

Now click the Submit to Post Transaction endpoint button.
The last chance for backing out is now. Click the Submit button and the transaction will be submitted to the ledger.

Each trustline added to the account requires a 0.5 XLM reserve. If your account does not have that much extra available, the transaction will be denied.

Conclusion

The same process can be used to add any asset tokens available on the Stellar network, as long as you know their Asset Code, and the Issuer Account ID.

Rember, only do this process when you must. There are rare occasions when you need to that or if you are issuing token or adding some asset that you fully trust.

You can always add trustline via Keybase, StellarPort, StellarX or some other Wallet apps like Lobster.

We used our asset BizzNerd as an example, but if you want to add it to your trustlines, use Keybase or Stellarport instead.

How to install the desktop version of the Keybase app

You can download Keybase app for any OS system you have including macOS, Windows and Linux.

The installation process boils down to:

• Download and install the Keybase app.
• Sign up for an account.
• Fill in your profile.
• Create a paper key.

Account Setup

You need to click Create an account link to make a Keybase account with a username and passphrase, then name your computer. (don’t use special characters like a dot (.) sign in your username).

You should probably name your computer “YourNickname’s Desktop” or “My Work Laptop”, I’m in the 0.001% of people who give their computers public DNS names. Remember, this name will be publicly visible.

You can skip mobile phone/email verification steps for now.

After registration, you’ll see the people tab after you’ve completed the sign-up process. This is also where Keybase will nag you about stuff you should do, new features, etc.

Well done! You’re up and running!

Profile Setup

Keybase is about finding real people. So, they ask for a minimal amount of info about you.

Go to the settings page and click the Edit Profile button (or your Profile icon in the bottom left). There’re only a few lines you need to enter (and they’re all optional). Note that this is publicly visible.

Manage Devices and Paper Key(s)

Keybase links your account to your computer. It stores all the magic keys needed to access your account. If for some reason you can’t access your account anymore – you can recover it with a created paper key.

So, to access your data anytime you need to create a backup key, or in Keybase terminology, a “paper key”. This is a random bunch of words you print out (on paper) as a backup.

To create a paper key(s) navigate to Devices section and there you’ll find a button “Add a device paper key”.

On this screen, you’ll be able to add a device or create a paper key.

On the next step press “Create a paper key” button.

Copy and paste it and print it out (or write it out by hand). And then store it somewhere safe.

The first 2 words of your paper key are public, they’re kind of like a username. Everything else is secret.

How to install a mobile version of the Keybase app

Either from your App Store or Google Play, choose an appropriate version for your mobile phone.

After a simple installation, you’ll have to confirm the mobile device. Go back to your PC app and got to devices and click on the Add a device or paper key button and select Add a phone option.

A bar code will appear to your screen that you’ll need to scan with your mobile app.

To pair a mobile device to your account you’ll need to repeat the same steps on your mobile app. Once you are ready, scan the barcode from the previous step.

How to Join Stellar Space Drop

The first thing if you didn’t do so far is that you need to enable your wallet. Go on your PC app and click on the wallet option. A new popup will appear and afterwards click Open your wallet option.

Now go back to the wallet tab and check whether you qualify for the airdrop. If you followed these steps correctly, the prompt will show that you qualify and that you can join the space drop now.

Inside your wallet, you’ll see o Join an airdrop option. Click Join the airdrop link and afterwards See if you qualify link.

Now is time to check whether you qualify for an airdrop.

If everything you did correctly you’ll finally see “Become a Lucky airdropee” link. Press that link and you are in and next Lumens airdrop will show up in your default wallet account.

If for some reason you receive “Sorry, you are not qualified to join.” message I advised you that check our Q/A section.

As you can see, I wasn’t qualified to join an airdrop in my first attempt, because I didn’t add my phone number and additional device.

Keybase Chat and Teams?

One of the greatest components of this piece of software is the ability to have encrypted and secure conversations with your friends and team members.

Here are some of the benefits that make Keybase Chat stand out:

• Chat history retention among all of your friends that cannot be compromised
• Support for multiple friends in the same chat via invitations
• Encrypted file transfers
• End to end message encryption

For those of you who manage or participate in teams for your projects, the Keybase Team Chat offers some more advanced features compared to the standard chat. Here’s some of what it offers in addition to the above:

• Supports teams of up to 500 members
• Add and remove members at any time
• You can create teams / subteams / channels
• Member hierarchy

Starting conversation is really easy – just find a friend that you want to chat, click on his profile and click the Chat button, then send messages back and forward. 

Also, what I like is that you can send Stellar Lumens directly to other members in a chat message. You just need to type a similar command in your message +2XLM@username and that is it (you can change the number of Lumens that you want to send).

There’s some limited formatting you can use as well as emojis (because every chat app needs emojis)!

You can add several people to one chat conversation if you like, but, if you have a group of people you want to talk to frequently, Teams are the way to go.

A Keybase team is a group of people who can communicate with end-to-end cryptography. This means the team’s chats and files cannot be read by anyone outside the team, not even someone who breaks into Keybase’s servers.

To communicate better with our readers we created our team on Keybase.

The team can be a public or private one. Team admins and owners can invite other team members. However, if you are a team owner you can as also assign roles to team members (owner, admin, reader) and create different channels and subteams.

Keybase Wallet

Using your Keybase wallet you can also lumens to anyone, even ones without a Keybase account. So now you can send lumens to anyone in the world and be sure they’ll get them.

Since Keybase wallets are non-custodial, you have direct access to the secret key to your Stellar account. Those funds are yours. You can use that key in a lot of Stellar clients, though you should be super careful with it because anyone who knows it has total access to your account. And of course, you can send funds to any Stellar address.

The Keybase team did an excellent job and there is a lot of super cool things you can inside your wallet beside sending and receiving Lumens. For example, you can have additional wallets, different trustilines and much more.

Why Canada is not included in the list?

They excluded Canada due to inability to verify if Canadian phone numbers are purchased at large scale.

What are the minimal requirements to join spacedrop?

Make sure that you installed Keybase app at least on two devices, created a paper key, that you are from an eligible country and that you verified mobile phone. Alternatively, you can have an app installed and only one device and have two paper keys.

You don’t need to do anything else (no additional identity proofs – I can verify this). But I recommend that you play with app, find interesting people to follow and teams to join.

Can I use my VOIP number, Google Voice number or landline number to join the airdrop?

Please use only your real cell number to join spacedrop. The app will probably recognize that you have a number in one of the approved countries but there is a huge chance that you’ll not be able to join spacedrop. If this happens – remove this number and try with your number instead.

Do I need Lumens in my account to receive drop?

You’ll only need to activate your wallet, but if you joined spacedrop you already this. The account will be activated with the first drop.

Can I have multiple accounts?

In the right-side navigation menu of your PC app, you’ll find an option to switch between accounts. On your mobile, there is a similar option on your profile page.

Don’t use multiple accounts to join space drop. There is a huge possibility that they’ll remove your account from spacedrop if you do so. Don’t be greedy it is a gift – let other people enjoy free Lumens as well.

Why I am not qualified to join the spacedrop?

First of all, make sure that you read all of our QA section and official Keybase spacedrop page.

If you have all three green checks you’ll a receive a message “I am qualified to join”. Afterwards, you need to press “Become a lucky airdropee” button to join space drop.

If for some reason on this step you get “You are not qualified to join” message, there is a couple of things that could wrong here. You’ve probably triggered their fraud detection, but at the moment we don’t why or there is no official explanation from Keybase or SDF.

Also, a lot of people try to cheat by using VPN, VOIP numbers or doing some other funny business and they’ll be prevented to join airdrop with the same message. Also if your current location differs from your phone provider country – there is a chance that you’ll be blocked as well.

We reserve the right to blacklist users, even after registering. If you appear to use a bot or multiple accounts to sign up for Keybase, we’ll blacklist you. Similarly, if you appear to come from fishier IP’s, we may exclude you.

However, If you didn’t cheat and still are not able to join – it is a known issue. If you are experiencing this issue nobody can really help you. You can report this is as a bug to their Git page and that is only you can do at the moment. I personally think that the problem is in phone numbers and that some real phone couriers using other cheap services, but that is my personal opinion.

Will installing my app on other device resolve my issues with joining spacedrop?

Reinstall Keybase app will not help, resetting the router or adding Keybase on another PC – because it is the server-side issue rather than a client-side issue.

Why I didn’t receive Stellar Lumens?

If you joined airdrop successfully – you’ll not get Lumens right away. The first airdrop will be on the 15 of November and next one on 15 of December. If you were eligible for spacedrop and didn’t receive your lumens – there is nothing you can do at the moment. This is taken from their official page:

How much Stellar Lumens I will receive?

In total, they are giving 2 billion Lumens (roughly $129 million USD) out using Keybase over the next 20 months. On the 15th of each month, SDF will give the next batch, divided equally among everyone.

At the moment of writing this article, there are 167965 registered users. The next airdrop will be Nov 15, 2019, and they will be equally shared to each user 100 million Stellar Lumens (XLM), which means that each user will receive approximately 597 Lumens (XLM).

How to report Bug from PC?

If you are having problems on your PC. Then open the command prompt (click Start, Run -> type in CMD )

Then this window will appear, where you need to type the following command :

Keybase log send

And then follow instructions.

How to report bug from mobile?

Login to your mobile app, then just follow instructions from Settings > Feedback page

Conclusion

Keybase is a great app and it is more than just a simple chat app. However, it consumes a lot of memory on mobile and PC as well. Also, I’ve experienced some bugs as well and network issues. I don’t really mind all of those issues, because the app is in the early stage and it will improve over time.

Only what I mind is lack of support. There is no way to communicate with Keybase staff directly. Mostly guys across channels inside the Keybase app are regular members helping others.

Unlike your Slacks, Basecamps or your Yammers, who put an emphasis on closed, intra-organizational collaboration, Keybase offers a more social environment where anyone can communicate and collaborate with anyone – via mobile or desktop – securely.

We live in a hyper-competitive age where enterprises and individuals have to be quick on the draw to stay ahead. To achieve that end, collaboration has become an absolute necessity in the day-to-day running of operations. Both startups and incumbent tech giants have put forward answers to the question of fostering effective team cohesion in the modern age. Their products have been predominantly targeted at corporates however, effectively locking a large group out of the platforms.

Think of Keybase as Slack, Twitter, and Dropbox all wrapped in one neat E2E encrypted package. It’s completely free and open-source for anyone to use. All this considered, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that people in the technology sector start using it. What we were surprised that they even offer private GIT repositories for free and we were thrilled to discover this feature. It was like a hidden treasure for us.

Platform Anatomy

E2E Encryption is Keybase’s defining characteristic, as it permeates just about every aspect of the platform. from the platform’s multi-device functionality to its groups (known as teams), file storage, chats, and GIT repository (We did say, Keybase is a hit in tech-geek circles).

Keybase also sports an innovative Identity Verification model. Instead of the usual, a selfie with ID and identity verification, Keybase enables users to verify their identity by connecting their social media accounts and PGP keys through the platform, which simplifies the identity verification process.

Keybase created its own file-sharing system called KBFS. Files can be uploaded to two different folders, either public or private, which will be signed by you and have end-to-end encryption. Keybase offers 250 Gigabytes of storage space for teams and individuals. The service is both, free and heavily encrypted for convenient and secure sharing.

Keybase allows super convenient in-chat sends, which you can denominate in your currency of choice. That means you can interact with people financially the same way you interact with them socially.

There’s a “$” button in direct chats and you click it you can send or request funds in desired fiat currency or Lumens.

Harnessing the power of Blockchain Technology, Keybase also enables users to view and verify the cryptographic signature histories of other platform members (without compromising their data in any way, shape or form).

As a bonus, we found out that Keybase also allows users to set up a static website, free of charge.

Appearance & Interface

You can download Keybase app for any OS system you have including macOS, Windows and Linux. They also have app versions for IOS and Android. 

Once you have installed the Keybase, you will have to sign in with your username and password and create a name for the operating system you are signing in with. After signing in make sure to verify your e-mail address and phone number via SMS. 

Once you sign in, go to your wallet and open it.

At first glance, the platform’s layout seems overwhelmingly unfamiliar but bares some similarities to Slack and other chat applications.

Fortunately, one quickly finds their way around the app quite easily and is using it with a degree of familiarity with 10 minutes or so.

Now we can get on with the next steps to become eligible for the XLM space drop.

How to Join Keybase Airdrop and Claim Free Lumens (XLM)

In order to join airdrop, you’ll need to install the app on at least 2 devices (mobile and desktop) and create a paper key. Additionally, you’ll need to verify your phone number.

Now go back to the wallets tab and check whether you qualify for the airdrop. If you followed these steps correctly, the prompt will show that you qualify and that you can join the space drop now.

Keybase is a free and open-source chatting application that is powered by public-key encryption. It is alternative to Slack, WhatsApp, Telegram, and other chat apps, whit slight difference allowing team encryption. It supports groups big and small, communities, and teams.
