Boasting a long line of favorable player reviews on Oculus.com, Blade & Sorcery Nomad’s combat physics have already taken it a long way. So, are they telling the truth? Could this really be the best combat game available to play on Quest 2? Let’s find out.

Developed and published by WarpFrog, Blade and Sorcery: Nomad is a Meta Quest 2 exclusive of the immensely popular “built-for-VR medieval fantasy sandbox” game that’s been making waves on PCVR since its release in December 2018.

Being a version that is optimized to suit a stand-alone VR headset, Blade and Sorcery: Nomad has had a little bit of it shaved off so one should not expect it to be as visually gratifying as its PCVR counterpart. However, the physics – which is a major factor of why this is such a great title – remains largely unchanged.

What’s it like to play?

Blade and Sorcery: Nomad is all about the player, by that I mean, there is no storyline that dictates when you get to do what. With this game “the combat is limited only by your own creativity.” Though it is a game, Blade and Sorcery simply aims to be the best simulation of medieval combat – with a bit of magic thrown in for good measure.

“A big component of Blade & Sorcery, and something that might be tricky for people to wrap their head around at first, is that primarily it is a simulation and secondary a game,” as per The Barro, who is a developer at WarpFrog and the community manager of Blades and Sorcery.

That said, Quest 2 owners who want to give Blade and Sorcery: Nomad a run will be in for a little less in the way of enemies and maps. For example, players who’ve had a taste of the PCVR version might notice that Nomad is missing the Citadel map – which thes been giving the developers a hard time as they’ve been battling to get it to work on Quest 2.

Besides using the games renowned physics and a wide variety of medieval weapons to slay hilariously doll-like “AI” enemies, Nomad also features a “Dungeons” game mode that is a little more structured than the regular sandbox delivery of play – it’s the same thing, just procedurally-generated.

Magic is also a key part of playing Blades and Sorcery: Nomad and it can be used as a direct attack – like throwing a ball of fire at a foe, or used to enchant an equipped weapon, or even slow down time for those YouTube worthy cinematics. All in all, this game amounts to a satisfactory experience for those who would be interested in simulating the gore of medieval combat – even with the enemy’s clownish behaviour.

Other key points

Nomad is set to receive all the exact updates as it’s PCVR sibling, meaning Quest 2 players are also in line to get the “Progression mode” update that is set to release next year – basically an upgraded form of the Dungeons mode. What this entails is the ability to unlock new weapons, create a separate character from your sandbox character and a range of new abilities and being able to collect loot.

Developed by Ember Labs and published by Epic Games, Kena: Bridge of Spirits offers a visually-appealing Action/Adventure RPG title. The game delivers on fantastic animation, though the gameplay is a tad simpler than the visuals would have one believe.

What Kena: Bridge of Spirits is about?

Controlling the title character, Kena, the player must navigate a mystical world. That includes trying to solve problems that fall on the metaphysical side of existence. Aided by little creatures known as Rot, Kena is tasked with lifting a mystical corruption from her village and helping guide those who have passed into the next world.

The title is the first offering from the developer, Ember Labs. The studio spent the first five years of its existence developing commercials and branded apps for firms. In 2016 they started putting-in work towards a full gaming project.

Story of the game

The title features an engaging plot, even though there isn’t much of a backstory to the title character herself. The plot is based on mysticism and lore. It follows a young girl, named Kena, who helps guide spirits who are stranded between this world and the next. That includes helping them make peace with the mistakes of their past. As she travels about, she collects little spirit creatures called Rot, which help her in various ways.

Kena (voiced by Dewa Ayu Dewi Larassanti) is a spirit guide who, on her way to the Sacred Mountain Shrine, comes across an abandoned village. The village and the surrounding area happen to be under a curse. The curse causes the forest to decay and makes monsters spring up everywhere. This is revealed to be the doing of a masked spirit, who initially refuses Kena’s guidance. It is an elderly being named Zajuro, who informs Kena that helping the lost spirits within the village is what will clear her path to the Sacred Mountain Shrine.

Spiritism inside Kena: Bridge of Spirits

She encounters the spirits of two young children, whose older sibling is a restless spirit that is overcome by corruption. The siblings were separated after an explosion. Emanating from the Sacred Mountain Shrine, it wiped out their village. The older sibling, Taro, searched for the little ones but was overwhelmed by the corruption which afflicts his village. After Kena collects the relics attached to the memories he (Taro) had in life, she can free him from the curse and guide the sibling spirits into the afterlife.

After some more touching tales, in which Kena battles and puzzle-solves her way to helping the deceased move on, she encounters the powerful, masked spirit again. It turns out to be Toshi, a former leader of the village. Her attempts to help him move on are, once again, rebuffed – as a result of the corruption being too strong.

She crossed into the spirit realm to collect relics connected to Toshi’s life but failed to free him. The showdown occurs on a mountain – quite fitting for a metaphysically themed title – where he fuses the Rot spirits with the corruption and creates a giant, super Rot. After defeating the creature and releasing the Rot, Toshi finally reveals how things got to that point.

The Gameplay

Available on PlayStation 4, and 5 and PC – Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an Action/Adventure title with Platformer, and Puzzle elements embedded into the storyline. It is played from a third-person perspective and only allows for a single player.

Kena’s arsenal is quite simple but effective. It features a staff and a spirit shield. Her staff can be used in combat, as a grappling hook, and as a plain old stick, to bash crystals while solving puzzles. An upgrade to the staff renders it with the ability to be used as a bow, enabling Kena to fire magical energy arrows at enemies.

On the defensive front, Kena is equipped with magic called Pulse Ability. When Pulse Ability is activated, it acts as her shield. It’s not permanent though and has its own health meter, which is depleted by attacks from enemies. The Pulse Ability can be used to find clues, or activate objects. Upgrading enables the player to dash forward, stun enemies, and pass through barriers leading to the spirit realm. The Pulse Ability shines when it allows Kena to lift and move big rocks, for platforming, or pancaking enemies.

Kena also needs to collect little spiritual creatures called Rot, while running about completing tasks. These Rot act as helpers. Once Kena has collected enough Courage, she can employ the Rot to move objects, take certain shapes, and distract enemies. They can also be infused into an attack to make it stronger.

Final Thoughts

Kena: Bridge of Spirits, is a great Action/Adventure title, even though it is the first game from the developer. The game mixes a few old, and new, gaming concepts and delivers a charmingly enjoyable title.

The game’s visuals are phenomenal, with Ember’s animation experience shining through with this game. The infusion of Eastern spiritual concepts – Karma, meditation, etc. – into gameplay also offers a unique touch.

Released in 2012, created by CyberConnect2, and published by iconic combat game publisher, Capcom, Asura’s Wrath follows the exploits of a deity who is fuelled by rage. The title, which is mostly cutscenes, plays out like an intense dream, delivering thrill.

Despite the game’s over-the-top settings, and characters, along with Asura’s ridiculous motivations, it remains intensely fun to play. Well, there’s so little for the player to do except “help” the gameplay itself by mashing buttons here and there to help Asura along, as one will mostly be watching brilliantly presented cutscenes.

Any other title would fall flat on its face were it to be presented in the manner in which the Asura’s Wrath title is presented. CyberConnect2 mixed so many genres into this title, that it works brilliantly. At its base, it is an Action Brawler title but borrows elements from rail shooters, Science Fiction, Eastern mythology, and manga/animé that delivers an intensely entertaining story.

It’s pretty much an interactive animé, where the manly stereotypes that gave titles of the era their edgy appeal, are overplayed so brilliantly that Asura’s Wrath becomes a ridiculously fantastic masterpiece. Armed with a rage that knows no bounds, the lead character punches his way to vengeance against former allies, who have become immensely powerful cosmic beings. He more than rises to the occasion; several times.

The Story of Asura’s Wrath

Asura’s Wrath is set in a universe where the title character, Asura, is a powerful demigod who is powered by his wrath. He starts as one of the Eight Guardian Generals, who lead the Shinkoku Army against an evil force known as the Gohma. A fellow general, Deus, approaches him with a plan for a new age, called The Rebirth, but he refuses. Not too long afterwards, the Emperor is murdered and Asura has been framed for the act. His wife is murdered, his daughter taken from him, and he is executed and banished to Earth, or Gaea.

12,000 years pass before Asura, thanks to his rage and the urging of a clockwork spider known as the Golden Spider, climbs from the pits of hell and retakes his body. Back among the living, and disgusted at his former comrades for failing to end the Gohma threat in 12 millennia, as well as betraying him, Asura assumes the path of vengeance.

Assura, while saving a village from a Gohma attack, soon meets with one of his old allies, Wyzen, who has come down to earth in a Capital ship. Wyzen tells Asura of the events that have taken place since his banishment, but Asura, angered by it all, interrupts the villain’s monologue with a punch to the mug. An intense battle ensues, but Asura makes quick work of Wyzen.

Not content to go down so easily, and perhaps eager to show his old ally how powerful he’s gotten over the years, Wyzen takes on a new form. As Gongen Wyzen, his promotions are exaggerated to the point where he is the size of a solar system. Giant Wyzen tries to crush Asura with an enormous finger, but the indomitable God of Wrath beats on the finger till the body attached to it is consumed in flame.

This is just the beginning of the insanity. It gets more, and more, intense and satisfying as the story progresses. Asura dies a few more times but keeps returning by the power of his wrath. He is driven by the motivation to seek revenge for his betrayal, to recover his daughter who powers a machine that harvests human souls and to rid the world of the Gohma demon forces. And he does it with flair befitting a cosmic being.

The gameplay of Asura’s Wrath

Though Asura’s Wrath is a beat-em-up styled title. It often finds itself switching between genres of game. Each level of the game is styled like an anime episode, and each level is grander and more spectacular than the previous one. We swear, there’s little chance for one to get bored here.

Asura comes with three gauges, your standard health gauge lets you know how close you are to restarting the level, while a burst gauge must be filled by doing damage to enemies. There is also a third gauge, the ‘Unlimited Gauge’, which works much like the burst gauge but allows one to deal heavier damage while it is engaged.

The burst gauge is usually engaged at moments that are vital to the plot, like finishing off a boss fight to advance through to the next cutscene. The game is, at times, a third-person beat-em-up, sometimes a rail shooter where Asura moves on a fixed axis and can only manoeuvre enough to get out of the way of enemy fire.

Also integrated into gameplay, are interactive cutscenes, which will have users frantically pressing buttons to advance to the next stage in the sequence. Failure to keep up with the prompt button sequences may have one restarting the entire cutscene, which can happen often on higher difficulty levels.

Platforms

This title, seeing as it first saw release back in 2012, is available on PlayStation, and Xbox 360. The game was built on unreal engine 4, which probably explains a lot. I mean, the title is just vibrant with the special effects, albeit presented in a 2D manga/animé style.

The Verdict

Asura’s Wrath began to be developed in 2007, and the intention behind the concept, according to CyberConnect2, was to create a gaming title that would be appealing to a global audience. This would suggest that there was a method to the interactive anime styling of the title, as well as the mad action that makes up the game.

The title came together quite well, being an instant hit in Japan while having mixed reviews in the West. Some western critics found the title’s interactive anime-Esque cutscenes refreshing, while others complained that they detracted from regular beat-em-up, brawler gameplay. Either way, it seems critics could agree that the action in Asura’s Wrath makes sure the game is never predictable and creates anticipation for the next chapter in the story.

Though the title has gotten on in years, it is still worth the occasional visit, as the overdone action just doesn’t get old. Asura’s Wrath was a one-time release, which has made it a sort of classic, one that one may want to interact with during these trying times. Asura’s never-say-die attitude is something of an inspiration.

Journey is an artsy indie videogame developed by Thatgamecompany and Santa Monica Studio. Originally they published it exclusively for PlayStation but has been available for IOS and Windows since 2019. It has won several Game of the year awards and was even nominated for Best Score Soundtrack in Visual Media in the 2013 Grammy awards. With many people putting it at the top of their videogame ranking lists and very positive reviews on Steam, it’s natural to wonder what is so special about this two-hour indie game.

Gameplay

Journey brings elegance in which you explore the landscape. Along with elegance, a sense of fluidity is present in the movement of your character that makes it mesmerizing and enjoyable to play. Monotone and sluggish walks through the desert are intercut with sudden bursts of freedom where you can float through the air or glide down sand dunes. Later on, the player’s scarf is extended which leads to complete freedom of flying.

However, the game knows when to restrict you as well. In the underground chapter where you meet the dragon, you will feel sort of anxious. That is not just because you’re meeting the enemy. In that chapter, the movement is very limited with no flying, which gives of the feeling of being stuck or falling behind. The restriction of movement beautifully accentuates the vulnerability you feel while the monster roams around searching for you.

Journey visuals

The game is beautiful and majestic. The stunning visuals are supposed to evoke an emotional response in you. It does so by enhancing every movement and aspect of the game. For example, in the first chapters, your scarf moving with the wind evokes a feeling of freedom. On the other hand, in the final chapter, it feels like a burden that is pulling you behind. Another great example of cleverly used visuals is the color red. Objects that you can interact with and your own character is red. The game teaches you this association early on, so whenever you enter a new area you know what you need to do.

Journey is often criticized for its visuals. Critics say that the stunning visuals are there to distract the players from lack of substance and plot. However, they are there to heighten the emotional impact of your journey, to compliment and accentuate every other aspect of the game in a beautiful way.

Music in Journey

As most would agree, this game has an amazing soundtrack. The main theme is beautiful and memorable and on the whole, the game has a wonderfully arranged and composed score. The score manages to encapsulate the sense of spiritual or ancient power that has an element of tragedy to it.

Journey is a whole lot different than most of the video games on the market. How many videogames that don’t feature challenge or difficulty in their core can you think of? I bet it is not that many. What is also fascinating about Journey is that your character’s abilities are stripped to the bare minimum. In today’s age, where our brains work overtime during gaming, we tend to be preoccupied with playing the game, rather than experiencing it. Journey, while pushing videogaming boundaries, delivers a meaningful and enriching game with emotional investment while not focusing on the plot or characters.

Independent game house Creamative‘s retro-styled pixelated brawler Clan N became available for mobile play on the 9th of March, 2021. The nostalgically styled beat-up-brawler adds modern mechanics to the visuals. They borrowed sound effects from games of yesteryear.

First released on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch™, Steam, Windows 10 gaming platforms through 2020, the beat-em-up brawler Clan N finally found its way to mobile in 2021. Styled like a classic in the brawler genre, Vendetta, Battle Axe, and the like, the indie title offers some modern twists.

The Plot of Clan N

The game’s storyline is very simple. It also lacks dialogues and cutscenes, which leaves a lot open to interpretation. The opening sequence is brilliantly executed and is the beginning of the mysterious quest.

A mean-looking and obviously evil warlord/sorcerer/tyrannical deity looms over a town that doesn’t seem as though it is deserving of the destruction that is about to be unleashed upon it.

Out of the ensuing chaos, four heroes (playable characters) show enough valor to fight against the sorcerer/ warlord/ evil being’s forces and defeat the evil that has befallen their once peaceful home. Not much is explained beyond that, as no dialogue, or cutscenes, are employed to round off the storyline. The game, instead, puts a bigger focus on gameplay, not that brawlers need a soapie-styled storyline anyway.

How does Clan N’s gameplay differ from others?

As previously stated, Clan N’s gameplay offers the best of pixelated brawler classics, along with modern game mechanics, giving newcomers of the genre simpler access to the fun. For one, the game employs a wider angle on the action, as well as an added isometric view.

In addition to wider angled gameplay. which softens the gore element associated with titles of this genre of games Creamative has done away with the virtual joystick used in most mobile games and went for a more natural (as far as touch screens are concerned) control system.

The wider angled 2D and isometric views allow for more freedom of movement. The game doesn’t confine players to a set path to travel, allowing for more exploration, and the ability to fall back to a safer zone when dominated by enemies.

All movement and action can be controlled by a single thumb. Holding, tapping, or swiping one’s thumb across the screen will prompt characters to run, throw objects, or attack in a given direction. You can even set the system to support Left, or Right handed play.

The other thumb isn’t left completely out of the action. Employing a supporting thumb will allow for more complex movement; jumping attacks, leaping, and rolling away from danger, etc. Those who are used to button-mashing may have an awkward time with the controls at first, however. They seem quite intuitive once one is accustomed to them though.

One can play solo, or connect with friends through a local (when said friends are in your living room) connection, or with players from across the world as the game supports online play. Co-op mode is part of the reason why beat-em-up Brawlers became so popular in the first place.

In Closing

Creamative’s Clan N is a game that takes one back to the golden age of pixelated brawler games. Growing up, we’d spend the better part of our afternoons, and pocket money, crowding around arcade machines at a local store, taking turns with mates, playing Golden Axe, and similar games. Clan N does a decent passing-nod to the genre’s greatest titles while adding new-age elements that augment the experience.

Hitman Sniper Assassins, a mobile-native rebirth of an iconic title. One that – according to SquareEnix Montreal’s executive producer – promises to “raise the bar for player expectations of mobile sniper games,”.

Earlier this year, during the company’s digital showcase the, Japanese video gaming and entertainment empire – Square Enix – revealed a teaser showing off the latest addition to the Hitman series’ mobile branches. It is a product of the same development team that brought us HitmanGo (2014) and Hitman Sniper (2015).

What’s Hitman Sniper All About?

Well, Hitman Sniper Assassins is primarily a mobile shooter with a focus on taking precision shots. Opposed to getting into all-out gun battles to achieve your objectives. However, this is still a Hitman title so there will be numerous approaches and methods to reaching and eliminating your targets. It promises much of the same enthralling adventures of a globe-trotting contract killer.

“Project Hitman Sniper Assassins will be an evolutionary leap forward for the genre, and we can’t wait for players to share our excitement when they get their hands on it in the coming months,” said Square Enix’s executive producer, Dominic Allaire.

However, there seems to be a major drift away from the norm. That will be visible in the storyline. The major change is that the Hitman Sniper Assassins game does not put players into the world of Agent 47. Instead, this game focuses on a group of snipers. You can unlock and add them to your team of assassins as you progress through the game. Each one of them is equipped with a unique set of weapons, skills, and backstories.

And What About Actually Playing The Game?

As far as playing is concerned, the first order of business is the release date. In this regard, information is still very vague. A solid bit of intel is that Hitman Sniper Assassins is planned to release in 2021. Also, it may have a slightly different name on the release date, as “Sniper Assassins” is only a placeholder name.

The second question on people’s minds is, whether or not we’ll have to pay to enjoy Hitman Sniper Assassins? Once again, this is another point that the developers are yet to publicly address. However, when looking at the company’s previous offerings – with Hitman Sniper’s in-game currency that’s used for rifles and upgrades in mind, It may be safe to expect to see a similar approach to in-app purchases in the coming release.

Thankfully, the one bit of information that has some modicum of certainty to it is that Hitman Sniper Assassins will feature some kind of multi-player activities. Though nothing specific about this aspect of the game has come from the developers.

So far, this makes up all the information about Hitman Sniper Assassins that have been made available. So mobile gamers can only wait for further updates or the game’s pending release for download on AppStore and Google Play.

In the past few years, Nintendo’s legal team has been engaging in all-out legal battles. That includes multiple individuals and entities which have been in violation of its intellectual property rights.

Nintendo’s wish

In combating what it calls, “serious, worsening international problem.”, one of Nintendo’s earliest and most prominent court battles happened in 2018. During that year, the corporation filed a lawsuit against Sergio Mojarro Moreno. He was a reseller of pirating tools created by the now infamous Team Xecutor.

On the back of a victory on that front, Nintendo and its legal team set their sights on RomUniverse. A website that enabled the downloading of pirated Nintendo Switch games, among others. Once again, the multinational came out victorious. The skirmishes between Nintendo and the defendant culminated in the defendant being ordered to pay the company more than $ 2.1 million in damages.

However, in an interesting twist, the defendant – Matthew Storman – convinced the court that he is unemployed. In response to this, an agreement to make $50 per month payments was reached. However, it is reported that the defendant had failed to make the first payment. This is part of the reasoning behind Nintendo’s continued pursuit of RomUniverse, this time pressing the courts to issue a permanent injunction – which the company had not secured against the website in the first judgment.

Nintendo’s endless lawsuits

Since then, Nintendo has gained a bit of a reputation for its crackdowns on video game pirates. They were now going after the alleged leader of Team Xecuter, Gary Bowser, and one of his associates – Max Louran. Referring to Bowser’s and Louran’s endeavor as “an international pirate ring”, Nintendo filed a lawsuit – one copyright infringement charge and two counts for trafficking.

According to Nintendo’s filing, Bowser has been active in pirating their products since 2013. That’s when the company launched the Nintendo 3DS. Bowser was selling a device designed to hack the 3DS. The court filing also gives a detailed account of Bowser’s history of Nintendo Switch hacking. The company’s legal team also states that Bowser’s hacks “continue to put more than 79 million Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite consoles at risk from piracy.”

Nintendo wants $2500 for each device sold and $150 000 for every copyright. Naturally, the company would also like to see Bowser’s operation shut down for good.

Closing Thoughts

It will be interesting to see how this particular case plays out in the courts. It will be even more interesting to see how this will affect the rest of the industry. Will other gaming and consumer electronics corporations like Sony’s PS division and their counterparts at Microsoft follow suit?

That said, it looks as though the glory days of Nintendo hacking are soon to come to an end, or at least a rather dramatic slowdown as some individuals try to keep a low profile.

The King of Fighters, a title that conjures fond memories of nail biting action at the local arcade. Now, the 1994 released classic is back with a twist in The King of Fighters All Star

This mobile offering is quite a departure from what the game’s original developers SNK had released – a one on one tag team fighting experience. Now under the stewardship of Netmarble, The King of Fighters ALLSTAR has now been reinvented in the form of a classic beat-em-up. Storyline included.

The flashy, free to play mobile game is available for download on both AppStore and Google play. The aforementioned storyline thrusts the player into the life of a nameless character who manifests classic KoF characters in order to fight off droves of generic enemies.

The object? Our nameless hero is on a quest to find some answers about who he is and how he acquired his abilities. With the help of a girl named Noah – who advises the character to join the KoF tournament, the hope of getting the answers he seeks – our hero embarks on his journey.

How’s The Gameplay ?

First up, the graphics on this offering are commendable. The second positive point is that the controls are fairly simple and getting yourself used to them should not be a challenge.

Playing through the game is no different from any other old-school beat-em-up RPG. Using the digital analog stick to navigate, you fight off enemies moving from one screen to the next. At the end you will have to fight a boss character before progressing to the next level, where you will rinse and repeat – against slightly tougher foes.

However, due to KoF ALLSTAR being a mobile offering, levels are about three screens long – which is good for on the move gaming. Thankfully, there are more than enough levels to keep your boredom at Bay.

A player can swap between their 3 chosen characters at will, and one has to pay attention to an elemental affinity system. This means that characters of a certain element may be stronger or weaker against enemies of a specific element, like water versus fire for example. A diverse selection is advised.

Though the actual fighting is limited to basic kicks, punches, and signature moves, the beauty of KoF ALLSTAR’s gameplay lies in how you manage your team of chosen fighters. All three have an individual skill tree which has to be worked at to upgrade a character’s stats, unlock new skills.

It also features a co-op mode where players can team up and in app purchases.

Pros

The visuals are stunning and the stylized look fits very uniformly with the theme. The game is strangely addictive.

Cons

The only real flaw would be its free to play nature.

Valorant is an example of what happened when Riot Games – which is probably more renowned for being the creator of League Of Legends – got their chance to take their own approach to the free to play classic, Counter Strike. This is how it captured the hearts of FPS (First Person Shooters) fans.

Being Riot Games’ first shot taken at the fps scene, Valorant made its appearance through a creatively executed partnership with Twitch that handed out beta access selectively, and has since then grown into a smash hit among gamers.

However, Valorant does not rely on strategic marketing alone to impress players. Instead, Riot’s formula was to make the game play itself the primary focus. The theory behind what Riot calls “Competitive Integratity” is that if one wants to create a game to be enjoyed for years to come, focussing characters and maps may not have the same impact as focussing on the actual experience of playing – as maps and the like can always come in at a later stage.

The approach that Riot Games use with Valorant’s game play is all about making the player feel fully responsible for any mistakes that cause losses, not cheating, or balance issues that can be blamed on Riot Games. This is great because it works both ways, players are responsible for making the decisions that win matches – not an advantage created by asymmetry to how the map was designed. Of course people can buy Valorant accounts, however the competitive balance within the game is still there compared to other games in the FPS niche.

The Actual Gameplay

At its core, Valorant’s gameplay is a page taken straight out of Counter Strike’s book. Players go against each other in teams of 5. With bomb planting as one team’s objective, while the other is tasked with eliminating the other team or defusing it.

As familiar as all this sounds to Counter Strike players, Valorant is a completely different offering to the former as Riot Games’ creativity adds an extra layer of strategic playing by adding a special abilities element to Valorant.

With special ops and terrorists having been replaced by 11 characters with unique special abilities – known simply as Agents, players must be sure to choose an Agent who’s abilities will complement those chosen by other players in their team. The fact that you cannot switch agents until a match is entirely over makes this choice that little bit more important.

Each Agent character comes with their own signature ability. This is standard and will be replaced every round. Agents also have an ultimate ability and two other abilities they can use during matches. The former is earned by accumulating kills, while the later two must be purchased at the beginning of each round.

In much the same manner as Counter Strike, weapons are purchased at the beginning of each round. As for the weapons themselves, one has to get a little used to how they work – harsh recoil and a lot of spray – before getting the best of what Valorant has to offer.

The aforementioned spray is at its worst when players are moving, so most engagements on Valorant mean coming to a complete halt – where the best aim and quickest trigger finger decides who the winner is. These pauses end amazingly quickly, in case you were wondering.

At this point in time, Valorant only has five maps available for players to choose from. Thankfully, there’s more than enough in it’s gameplay that it takes a while to fully notice this. Getting to know these maps is advised, as it is always helpful when trying to anticipate enemies movements – the fact that you only have 4 to learn makes this easier.

Conclusion

Though Valorant is totally void of a storyline, the tangible focus on the gameplay sets this game apart. As simple as Riot’s recipe is, it’s a winning combination.
