Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Storm Ground is a turn-based tactical combat game that – as the name suggests – plays out in Warhammer’s fantasy world. This comes on the back of other Warhammer video games – digital card games and auto battles – that were not well received. So right out of the gate, Storm Ground has a lot of convincing to do.

The plot & the gameplay?

The game is set in a time of conflict between three gods who’s hoards of loyal followers are sent to battle it out on their crusades. The factions that partake in the hostilities are the Stormcast – the followers of Sigmar, the Nighthaunt – who serve the Nagash the Lord of Undeath and, the Maggotkin – servants of the plague god Nurgle.

After picking a faction, players are met with roguelike gameplay where they’ll assume control of a champion character with a band of followers in tow and guide them through grinding out new items, gathering loot, increasing skills, recruiting new members and tactical turn-based combat encounters.

Though not without its own flaws, battles themselves are probably the best executed and most pleasant part of playing Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Storm Ground. The turn-based combat follows simplistic rules and mechanics that maintain fairness without being rigid. The result is a predictable rhythm to the gameplay that anybody can get used to.

At the beginning of each round, players are allocated “power” resources – represented by a power meter – which is used to summon units. Any power which isn’t spent on summoning is then automatically converted to Aether, the in-game currency that is used to activate your units special abilities.

As each round passes and a new round begins, the power bar is refilled and will expand slightly, allowing players to requisition more expensive units as the battle draws on – giving Storm Ground’s combat system a sense of natural escalation.

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Storm Ground comes with PvP, player v AI skirmishes and a roguelike campaign. The latter of which is the most disappointing. It turns an activity that is meant to be fun into a tedious task, not to mention that progress from the campaign is separate from the other modes.

Pros

The game is visually pleasing enough and the simplistic approach to tactical turn-based combat makes Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Storm Ground an easy game for anyone to appreciate. There is also sufficient variety between the different playable factions.

Cons

A number of aspects of both the campaign mode and the single-player need to be reconsidered, like the insane amount of time that is spent grinding.

Another letdown is in the rules, through brilliantly simple there are a few inconsistencies to how they work – especially when it comes to how traps are triggered. Lastly, it is littered with bugs that make playing an irritating experience at some points.

As mobile gaming tech has advanced, smartphones and tablets have become an area of focus for game developers. Key segments like MMORPGs have sprung up and continue to flourish. Now Dragon Raja has come to take this genre to new heights.

Expected to go global in February next year. The game is a 3D Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) adapted from and named after a Korean best-selling Novel.

Graphics of Dragon Raja

Set in a modern fantasy world, this free-to-play MMORPG has the most awe-inspiring visuals in the mobile gaming space. Many thanks to the games development team for how they made use of the Unreal Engine-4. From the realism of the physics to the weather effects of Dragon Raja’s open-world environment, it all looks and feels very alive and natural, fueling one’s desire to explore.

From the very beginning, you get a sense of sheer attention to detail that went into the production of Dragon Raja. There are a host of interactive items as you get acquainted with the lead protagonist’s sleeping quarters such as, viewing a photo album or putting your guitar skills to the test before getting on with the task at hand.

The Plot

As mentioned before, the game is based on a novel that sold a lot of copies worldwide and that’s a great starting point. However, when it comes to adaptations, especially the book-to-film/video game sort, there are always a number of doubtful expectations.

That said, Dragon Raja’s plot might not be the best written and it is not void of clichés. However, a fair comparison to its competitors in the MMORPG segment puts Dragon Raja ahead of a lot of them.

The story is centered around the adventures of an orphan with the special gift of Dragon genes. More specifically, the task is to save the world from an evil association that is out to rule the world by releasing the Dragon Lord. If you can wade through the clichés, then the more pleasant side of Dragon Raja will prove quite rewarding.

The fun bits of Dragon Raja

There are a number of aspects, besides the stunning visuals, that make Dragon Raja an enjoyable experience. In this future fantasy world, you could almost get lost exploring real-world locations like Tokyo and Siberia.

Naturally, this happens after you’ve chosen your character class – each with its own unique strengths and weaknesses. From there, you can further customize them to your taste via a wide range of costumes and outfits that are available to choose from. Not to mention a host of other activities that one can take part in like daily quizzes, recruiting crew members, building your house, or even getting married.

The combat aspect of the game is not bad either. Once again, it is not the best you might encounter right now, but the combos and skills are flashy and varied enough to satisfy the desire for action. If fighting in a campaign doesn’t do it for you, the game also has a cross-server PCP option for you.

What could’ve been done better?

The first thing we ought to get out of the way is the fact that this is an open-world game with exceptionally crisp visual effects, therefore it is only natural that we would demand a lot from our devices in the way of storage space and hardware requirements.

Subsequently, the downside of having steep requirements means that we can’t really complain about the possibility of this particular aspect having been done any better.

That said, progressing through the game can feel rather linear at times. Another potential issue for some could be the game’s auto-play function, thankfully you have the option to turn it off in the settings – though not entirely.

Review of the fantasy Isekai anime: Overlord.

Overlord is a dark fantasy anime based on the novel counterpart written by Kugane Maruyama. It is produced by the famous anime studio Madhouse and directed by Naoyuki Itou. With the manga and light novels having more than 2 million copies, this anime was a great success since its airing in September 2015. Since then, there have been 3 seasons with 13 episodes each. Unfortunately, because of Covid, Madhouse has yet to announce when the 4th season will be released.

What is Overlord about?

Overlord, another anime of the Isekai genre, follows a man who gets trapped inside an MMO game. That guy is then a complete badass that no one can defeat. I know, never seen this trope before – painful Sword Art Online flashbacks. But, don’t you worry. This anime is far better than it sounds. Its dark thematic and boldness will intrigue even those who aren’t big fans of the Isekai genre.

A regular Japanese citizen suddenly becomes powerful evil Overlord

The name of the MMO is Yggdrasil. From once a strong guild, only 4 members continued playing it. Momonga, our main character, is the guild leader. After intense 12 years of the game, it was announced that the servers will shut down. But, they didn’t. Momonga finds himself unable to use options like exit the game or general chat. Soon, he realizes what has actually happened.

What’s particularly interesting is that the man trapped inside the MMO is playing a traditional villain character. He is then met with certain lifestyle choices like whether he should start a harem. Obviously, that is entirely possible. He is the ultimate evil Overlord after all. But, he doesn’t opt for that. It simply doesn’t fit the character he is portraying which makes him intriguing.

Characters

From villagers to demons, bosses, politicians, and criminals. This show has a massive cast of main and supportive characters. Overlord himself is an amazing written character. He actually portrays a socially awkward guy who spends most of his time in an MMO. The comedic essence of the show comes from him keeping up the act while all of his subordinate demons see him as a literal god.

Did Madhouse disappoint with Overlord?

Overlords animation isn’t bad in any sense. However, the studio animating it is Madhouse. For their standards and compared to past work they did, this just simply doesn’t feel like one of their anime. Madhouse animation is known to be very fluid with stylized art, so this one was certainly a disappointment. Certain spells and some light effects at times feel out of place.

Worth the watch

With its interesting cast of characters and some quality waifu bait, this anime certainly stands out within the genre. The targeted audience of the show at some point had dreams of living in their favorite fantasy world. They managed to show the main character truthfully as a socially awkward guy, compared to Kirito from Sword Art Online. Sadly, because of the bad aftertaste the Isekai genre leaves on many anime watchers, Overlord doesn’t get enough recognition.
