CD Projekt, the Polish holding company behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, no longer exists under that name. After a shareholder vote on June 23, the parent group officially rebranded to CD Projekt RED — the same name its game development studio has carried for over two decades. The change sounds minor until you realize it collapses a corporate structure that separated the holding company from its studio for 24 years. Whether that simplifies things or adds a layer of confusion depends entirely on how closely you follow the business behind the games.

How a 24-Year Split Between Parent and Studio Finally Ended

CD Projekt was founded in 1994 as a game distributor in Poland. It was never a studio — it was the business wrapper around one. In 2002, the company created an internal development arm called CD Projekt RED, and that division became the team responsible for building The Witcher franchise and, later, Cyberpunk 2077.

For over two decades, two names coexisted. “CD Projekt” meant the listed holding company on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. “CD Projekt RED” meant the developer. Journalists, investors, and fans often used them interchangeably, but technically they were different entities. The parent owned the studio. The studio made the games.

The shareholder vote changed that structure. Management’s stated reason was brand consistency — specifically, making the company easier to identify with its products on the global market and improving its position when recruiting international talent. The company’s own resolution language pointed to the fact that the parent and the development arm had been sharing the same core activities: game development, publishing, and IP management. Keeping two names for essentially one business was creating noise rather than clarity.

GOG Is Gone, and That Makes This Rebrand Make Sense

The name change does not happen in a vacuum. At the end of 2025, CD Projekt sold the GOG digital storefront back to its founder, Michał Kiciński, for $25 million. GOG had been part of the group for years, but the platform had drifted from the studio’s direction. The sale was a clean separation.

With GOG out of the picture, the remaining business is almost entirely about making games and managing intellectual property. The Witcher 4 is in active development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S out of the Warsaw studio. A sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is in development at CD Projekt RED’s Boston office. There are two additional projects in earlier stages — Project Sirius and Project Hadar.

A holding company called CD Projekt that owned a studio called CD Projekt RED made logical sense when you also had GOG in the group. Strip that out, and the two-name structure stops making business sense. Renaming the parent to match the studio is the cleaner move. The brand the world recognizes is CD Projekt RED. Now the listed entity carries that same name.

Where the Confusion Creeps Back In

Here is the wrinkle. For years, anyone who followed the gaming industry learned to use “CD Projekt RED” specifically for the development studio. The parent was “CD Projekt.” That distinction actually helped in some contexts — investors reading financial disclosures, journalists covering corporate news, and industry watchers tracking studio headcount versus holding company structure.

Now, “CD Projekt RED” covers everything. The listed entity. The Warsaw studio. The Boston studio. All of it. That merger of names removes a layer of specificity that served a purpose. If you are talking about the Warsaw team working on The Witcher 4 specifically, versus the broader corporate entity with multiple studios and projects, you now have fewer words to make that distinction.

From a pure branding standpoint, this is a strategic win. Most consumers never tracked the parent-studio split. They knew CD Projekt RED as the maker of their favorite games, and now the company’s stock listing and press releases carry that same name. Recruitment, global marketing, and investor communications all get cleaner.

From an industry-tracking standpoint, a subtle layer of corporate clarity disappears. That is a small trade-off for a company whose audience cares far more about The Witcher 4 than its holding structure — but it is worth naming.

The bigger signal here is strategic focus. CD Projekt RED is now a leaner organization with a clear identity, two active studios, and four projects in the pipeline. The rebrand does not change a single line of game code, but it does reflect a company that sold its non-core asset, unified its brand, and pointed everything toward the next generation of its franchises. For a studio that spent years managing a complicated post-Cyberpunk 2077 launch, that kind of structural clarity is not nothing.

Rebel Wolves, founded by former CD Projekt Red developers including The Witcher 3's director, reveals Blood of Dawnwalker — a dark fantasy RPG where you play a human-vampire hybrid navigating the medieval Carpathian mountains.

When the director of The Witcher 3 announces a new game, you pay attention. Konrad Tomaszkiewicz has resurfaced at Rebel Wolves, a studio formed in 2022 by former CD Projekt Red veterans, and their debut project — Blood of Dawnwalker — is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing fantasy RPGs on the horizon.

From CD Projekt Red to Rebel Wolves

Rebel Wolves represents a concentration of serious RPG talent. Founded by developers who helped shape The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, the studio brings decades of combined experience to an ambitious new IP. With Tomaszkiewicz at the helm — the same director who guided players through the Northern Kingdoms — expectations are understandably astronomical.

Human by Day, Vampire by Night

Blood of Dawnwalker puts you in control of Coen, a peasant whose transformation into a vampire goes catastrophically wrong. Instead of becoming fully undead, Coen becomes a Dawnwalker — a hybrid creature that’s human while the sun shines and vampire when darkness falls. His family has been taken by the vampires who changed him, and the game follows his quest to rescue them.

This dual nature creates mechanically distinct gameplay phases. During daylight hours, Coen relies on melee weapons and limited magic, interacting with NPCs as any human would. When night falls, everything changes. Coen gains vampire-specific abilities including massive claws, wall-walking, and teleportation. The transformation affects not just combat but how the entire world responds to you.

Medieval Carpathian Mountains

The setting draws from Eastern European folklore, placing players in the medieval Carpathian mountains — a region steeped in vampire mythology. Running on Unreal Engine 5, the environment promises to deliver the kind of atmospheric density that made The Witcher 3’s world feel so immersive.

Why This Matters

Blood of Dawnwalker represents exactly what fans wanted after The Witcher 3 — talented developers given freedom to pursue new creative visions. Whether Rebel Wolves can recapture that lightning in a bottle remains to be seen, but the pedigree and premise suggest this is a project worth following closely.

In 2015, Witcher 3 won the Game of the Year award. Its new next-gen upgrade for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC has arrived seven years later to eat up all of its competition and your free time!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt marked a remarkable expansion of CD Projekt Red’s tale. The game is on a genuinely gigantic scale, but it nevertheless pays attention to even the smallest of details. Story, mechanics, art, music, action, and lore all appear to blend together into one stunning whole in this game, which sees its hero, Geralt of Rivia, completely shift from the sword-swinging Mr. Loverman of the first game into a mature, contemplative hero. It establishes a new standard for the genre as the best fantasy role-playing game of its kind since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök are just two of the incredibly high-caliber games that have been released in the past 12 months. Yet, The Witcher 3 in its finished form competes head-to-head with the top games of 2022. The Witcher 3 has aged elegantly, and this updated edition just confirms that.

Update notes

Developer CD Projekt Red has released patch notes for The Witcher 3’s next-generation update, confirming some of the aesthetic improvements and changes made to the title.

These next-gen patch notes, which have gone live on the 14th of December for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms, outline many of the changes. However, notes for last-gen versions won’t be available for some time.

Changes made to Witcher 3 next-gen update

There are many visual improvements to explore. Ray tracing, 4K upscaling, and a number of mods intended to “enhance visuals and overall game quality” are all included in the update. You can check the list of mods below:

The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project by HalkHogan

HD Monsters Reworked by Denroth

Immersive Real-time Cutscenes by teiji25

Nitpicker’s Patch by chuckcash

World Map Fixes by Terg500

Along with these mods, they have also added Full Combat Rebalance 3 by Flash_in_the_flesh. However, they have changed the mod from its original form.

New and shiny things that you can wear in the Witcher next-gen update!

In terms of fresh material, CD Projekt Red has revealed a brand-new side quest called In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow. It is currently available in Velen and will reward players with items from the Netflix-exclusive Witcher series.

The Dandelion and the infamous Nilfgaardian armor sets, which were also influenced by Netflix’s The Witcher, now have alternate appearances thanks to the patch.

Along with these interesting additions, players also received multiple items that will improve their gameplay. They may be a bit boring but some of these will save your life eventually! The changes include rapid sign-casting, a better map filter, and more forgiving fall damage. The patch also resolves a number of problems that made it impossible to complete a few tasks.

Although the full patch notes provide a more thorough breakdown of the update, CD Projekt Red stated that the modifications described are “only the highlights,” which implies that there are additional adjustments that have not yet been made.

The world of Andrzej Sapkowski for the past year has only been gaining popularity among the general public. We can say that after the Netflix show even your mom heard about the Witcher. Millions have fallen in love with the cold-hearted and fierce Geralt of Rivia.

In the gaming world, the game that got this franchise an uncountable amount of recognition is Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. I can easily say it is one of the best RPGs out there. Taking into consideration that CD Projekt Red was just a small Polish developer not that long ago, Witcher 3 was the masterpiece no one expected.

Usually, most players started with the third part cause it wasn’t a necessity to play the first two parts in order to enjoy the third installation. Amazed by the Wild Hunt, some of them decided to take on the first two parts. The second Witcher is somewhat playable and when you get to the first part… You will probably wonder what pile of garbage is this. However, even though CD Projekt Red is preparing a new Witcher game for us, they’ve also recently announced that they are working on a Witcher 1 remake in Unreal Engine 5.

CD Projekt Reds announcement

At the end of October, they posted a blog post on their website about the remake and shared it on their Twitter.

Everything we know so far about the Witcher remake

The Witcher Remake is still extremely early in its production process, as you can see in the announcement Tweet, thus CD Projekt Red is already pleading for patience as it will be years before it is released.

Fans of the franchise are already accustomed to having patience given how far away The Witcher 4 is, so that part should be obvious. However, it seems likely that at this point we can’t truly hope for The Witcher Remake to release before 2025.

The original game

The opportunity for the story to change is obviously quite large. CD Projekt Red is completely rebuilding the game, but we can still draw some fairly firm conclusions based on how events unfolded in the previous Witcher game.

It presents a story that is a little bit simpler than that of The Witcher 2 or 3. Triss Merigold and other allies are attempting to assist Geralt’s recovery from amnesia as a battle between religious extremists and elven freedom fighters is happening.

Comparatively speaking to the games that came after, the first Witcher game is garbage; it has clumsy controls and much inferior production quality.

In Witcher 3, the fighting, which was a weak aspect in the original, had much improved. We predict that the combat in the remake will be even better. However, one thing we’re curious to know is whether it will share the gameplay of The Witcher 4 or will it have its own separate path.

Conclusion

Well, the only conclusion we can draw so far is that it’s way too early to say anything. This announcement caught everyone by surprise, but we are sure it was a pleasant one. Only thing we can do right now is for CD Projekt Red to drop more information about the Witcher remake.
