Like everyone, you are probably pretty suspicious. Trust me, we were too. This fandom has been a victim of many click baits over the years. So, it is expected of everyone to be suspicious. Right? A strange Twitter account pops up claiming to be the famous mangaka. A famous mangaka who has strayed from the online world and social media.

What’s different this time? Well, the Shounen magazine’s Twitter account also confirmed it. So, we guess we are in the clear for now. It’s not April Fools after all.

What does this mean for Hunter x Hunter?

Woohoo, we are getting another 4 chapters of the manga. Many people are disappointed by that number but come on, it is better than zero. Since the break has been quite a long one, we are here to remind you of where the story actually went off.

The final chapter, at least for now, is 318 and is also titled Clash 1. Now, this implies that the break the mangaka took must have been quite sudden in order to finish off the series with this. Or perhaps he likes to torture his fans? We will never know. 

This chapter continues on the story of the Succession War. We, as the reader, are following Kurapika on his job of being a bodyguard to one of the princes involved in the war. The royal family believes that the vessel is heading towards the Dark Continent. However, the Hunter Association has a clever plan. They will drop off the royal family at the ‘’fake’’ Dark Continent and head to the real thing. Also, there is sort of a subplot going on regarding the mafia families.

Final thoughts

People hear about Hunter x Hunter returning and immediately think of Gon, Killua, Hisoka, and other major characters. However, most probably these new chapters will feature the miscellaneous characters of the mafia. That doesn’t mean the new manga chapters will be bad. We just have to keep an open mind and wait for the release of the manga!

Jujutsu Kaisen manga and anime

The manga series first appeared in a popular Japanese manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump, in March of 2018. The series was a prequel to Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School. Later it was renamed Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

The series was created by Gege Akutami. In 2020, the animation studio responsible for the final season of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin,) MAPPA, released a 24 episode adaptation of the manga series. The anime ran from October of 2020 to March of the following year.

What is Jujutsu Kaisen about?

The story follows young Yuji Itadori, a physically gifted student. He is quite sought after by his school’s athletics teams, but he avoids getting involved as a result of the time commitment involved with sports. Instead, he joins the school’s Occult Research Club, which will allow him more time to visit his ailing grandfather in the hospital.

On his deathbed, his grandfather leaves him with two gems of elderly wisdom. He tells Yuji to “always help people” and to “die surrounded by people”. He seems greatly affected by his grandad’s words, and distilled his wisdom into a single statement “everybody deserves a proper death.”

Shortly after his grandfather’s passing, he encounters a sorcerer, Megumi Fushiguro, who can control cursed animals. Megumi is in search of a powerful cursed talisman. Unfortunately, the item is in the possession of the Occult club, who have already unsealed the talisman. What follows is an attack of dark curses on the school.

Early Plottwist of the show

Curses, in the context of this narrative, are wicked spiritual entities born from the negative emotions that flow through humans. They consume the energy of sorcerers and other magically charged objects.

Yuki, probably acting on his grandfather’s last words to him, acts to protect his friends by swallowing the cursed object which has brought on all the mayhem. This causes him to be possessed by Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful evil spirit, who has the potential to bring about unspeakable imbalance in the world.

Sukuna is to be exorcized on sight along with his host. However, Yuji’s mental and other faculties remain unchanged. Megumi’s teacher takes Yuji to the Kyoto school of Jujutsu so he can propose a delay of the execution to his superiors.

The cast

The series was first announced as early as 2019, with MAPPA responsible for all products of the series. Producer, Sunghoo Park took charge of the adaptation, while Hiroshi Seko oversaw scripts. Tadashi Hiramatsu was in charge of character design.

Eren Jaeger, Mikasa, Armin and the rest of the Survey Corps return, four years after events that saw the Armoured and Colossal Titans attempt to kidnap Eren for his Titan. Things have changed, and one is left unsure of which side to root for all, as the story reveals the – quite justifiable – motivations of the other side.

In the third season of Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan,) it was revealed that the world is a lot bigger than the confines of the walls the story has played out all along. It is also revealed that the hordes of Titans who have devastated the land are pawns in a military game. They were put there to terrorize the land of India.

Season four puts us in the land of Marley, a rival nation to the native land of Eren and his group. In Marley, we see how the other side lives, and what drove the motivations of Annie, Reiner and the others when they infiltrated India.

A new group of recruits to the Marleyian army, who are of Eldian descent – and therefore can turn into Titans – is introduced early in the season. The group find themselves swearing loyalty to land that hates them for their abilities, though they are rather integral to their military strategy.

They are also faced with the spectre of impending annihilation as a war with a new faction, the Mid-Eastern Alliance, reveals technological advancements – in the way of warfare – that may soon see the use of Titans fall away. This may mean that the Marleyian army may do away with them, should they no longer need them.

This season turns slightly away from the central theme of previous seasons, “who is the real enemy“, to posing a series of moral questions. It puts characters at the mercy of institutionalized racism while questioning their ideologies. It also continues to ask the question, through the actions of its main protagonist, Eren, “at what point has one gone too far?”

The series is still, very much, survival-focused and the stakes are a lot higher. One suddenly realizes how big the Attack on Titan world is, and how focusing on a small part of it for so long has caused one to miss out on a good amount of perspective. While feeling lied to, and doing one’s damnedest to decide one’s position – in light of all that has suddenly been revealed – one begins to wonder if anyone is truly innocent.

Eren himself seems to flip a gasket and goes from being a passionate young man who is willing to put it all on the line for his friends, to looking more like a reckless lunatic who has been fighting for so long that he may no longer be sure of what he’s fighting for. He makes a few questionable actions, ones that somehow also make one understand the very personal sacrifices everyone has made throughout the conflict.

This is still Attack on Titan, and attachment to any particular character is still folly, as the series kills off some characters that have – pretty much – become institutional. The second part of the final season will be on our screens soon, and from what we’ve seen thus far, the Attack on Titan narrative looks as though it may conclude with a few explosive revelations.

Anime to look forward to seeing

Demon Slayer Season 2

Thanks to top class production work from Studio Ufotable, the first season of Demon Slayer quickly became one of the most popular anime series in recent times – followed by an equally well received movie, Demon Slayer’s second season was left with a pair of sizable shoes to fill.

However, Fans of Demon Slayer don’t have much to worry about because it’s Ufotable in the driver’s seat for season 2 as well. The second season will once again focus on the adventures of the Demon Slayer Corps – this time, going toe-to-toe with their adversaries in Yoshiwara red-light district.

Sonny Boy

Sonny Boy was bound to draw a lot of attention from anime fans as it is an original creation from the same mind that directed the hit series, One Punch Man. This time, Studio Madhouse and Shingo Natsume bring us a story of 36 students who find themselves trapped in a mysterious world with its own rules and physics. As they try to find a way out, they each start to discover that they have unique abilities and it is not long before individual differences lead to a factional rift between the students.

World’s End Harem

World’s End Harem is quite different yet promises to leave viewers satisfied with its unique science fiction themed approach to Ecchi anime. The story plays out in a world devastated by a disease that decimated the male population, leaving only a few men like the main character, Mizuhara Reito – who had been asleep in a cryogenic state during the outbreak.

However, our leading man has no real interest in repopulating the planet, his greatest interest goes by the name Tachibana Erisa – it’s a story of love and temptation that is told from a refreshingly different perspective.

Blade Runner: Black Lotus

Not only is Blade Runner: Black Lotus is a collaborative endeavor between AdultSwim and Crunchyroll, it is also the result of a team effort from the director of Appleseed – Shinji Aramaki, and his counterpart in the production of Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Kenji Kamiyama.

The story is set in 2032 Los Angeles, California and picks things up from about a decade following the events of the short film – Blade Runner: Black Out 2022.

Platinum End

Platinum End is an anime adaptation of a manga series that was created by the same minds that brought us Death Note. The story revolves around a student who is saved from death by their guardian angel, who also confers special powers to the boy – which is quite necessary considering that he is among a group of 13 who have been selected as potential candidates to replace God who soon to relinquish his title.

One of the first things that potential viewers ought to know about The World’s Finest Assassin is that it falls into the Isekai sub-genre of anime, therefore, one should expect to see themes usually associated with this genre – which might not be to everyone’s tastes.

That said, The World’s Finest Assassin is adapted directly from a light novel that was penned by Rui Tsukiyo, the very same writer behind the popular Redo of Healer – which may have something to do with this title’s fanfare. The anime series is brought to our screens under the directorship of Tamura Masafumi, who is a notable name in Japan’s animation scene and boasts titles like Two Car and Ange Vierge on his belt.

The anime series is a collaborative effort by Silver Link and Studio Palette, the former a veteran with more than 10 years in the anime industry – as for the latter, the production process behind The World Finest Assassin anime series is part of the learning process.

So, what’s it about?

Well, the title is quite self explanatory. The story revolves around our protagonist, Lugh. However, being that this series falls into the particular genre that it does, what we have is the usual suspect of an overpowered lead character.

The story plays out in a fantasy world of magic casting nobles who are also in the habit of hiring assassins to kill for them and

kicks off with our protagonist – not necessarily a good guy, but simply the lead character – finds himself being disposed of after fulfilling his duties. However, Lugh wins the favor of a goddess who reincarnates him as a member of a noble family.

“After spending my final day thinking through my options, I decided to stick with what I’d chosen the previous day.

I’d use Rapid Recovery and Limitless Growth to improve my fundamental abilities. Martial Arts would sharpen my movements. Spell Weaver and Total Affinity would greatly increase the tools at my disposal, and my D-Rank skill would be my ace in the hole.”  The protagonist thinking about what he’ll need to start his new life.

Naturally, this would not be much of a story if there wasn’t some kind of a twist. To that end, our protagonist is tasked with killing a hero in the future, so the whole story revolves around Lugh’s preparations to kill a target 18 years after his resurrection.

As mentioned before, this is an isekai and because of that, viewers won’t find very much in the way of character development. I mean, our protagonist starts his new life already knowing what to do, what skill sets he has at his disposal and a wealth of experience as an assassin in his past life.

That’s the one of the biggest challenges that come with overpowered lead characters; the only way to add depth to a story is either to limit the character, or incorporate similarly overpowered adversaries. The World’s Finest Assassin opted to go with the latter option, however, our equally matched opponent remains a distant concept until the actual encounter with our protagonist – and It doesn’t look like we’re anywhere near that point.

All in all, this is a series that has the potential to be a good viewing, however, there are those points that let it down. If one feels like those are forgivable, then The World’s Finest Assassin could be a good choice for them.

Produced by David Production, the Fire Force anime series is adapted from a manga that was written by Atsush Ōkubo and was first published by Kodansha in September of 2015 – and it’s still going strong by the way.

So, what’s it about?

Before going into exactly what Fire Force is about, it might be worth remembering beforehand that very few things are truly flawless and this anime title is no exception. To that effect, the early stages of Fire Force could leave many viewers disinterested due to the rather generic story behind the lead character.

The protagonist in this series follows the typical blueprint of coming from a background of tragic events which fuels an insatiable appetite to be the best at what he does, we’ve seen this countless times and not just in anime. To make matters worse, the series takes a bit of time in getting viewers to the fin parts.

That said, Fire Force is set in a fictional period in a time dubbed Tokyo’s Solar Era. The year is 198, more than two hundred years after The Great Cataclysm. An event that saw entire nations being wiped out as the vast portions of the world were set ablaze and people perished from spontaneous human combustion.

However, those who spontaneously set on fire don’t die as a result, instead of turning into a horde of flaming demons known as infernals. These living infernos are a first-generation result of the phenomenon, which are soon followed by the second generation of a more powerful horned variety of called demons. There is also a third-generation, one that has the power to control fire – an ability referred to as pyrokinesis – while retaining their full human form and characteristics.

As the rest of the world collapsed, a pocket of humanity was able to thrive in Tokyo with the help of Haijima Industries, and their belief in the sun god, Holy Sol. This is where our protagonist, Shinra Kusakabe, joins the Fire Force, an elite unit made up of mostly pyrokinesis powered people and It’s not long before questions about the origin of the internal are questioned.

What’s good?

Fire Force puts a nice fanatical theme on fire fighting, which is a theme that’s been played with more than a few times but never in this manner – the series has a way of playing out this fantasy in a way that still manages to incorporate a good amount of realism.

What’s not?

Though Fire Force has its shiny facets, it is not perfect. Being an action-packed story of fighting with fire, it doesn’t seem to match up with its most comparable series – Promare. Furthermore, the series is shonen to the core, so it carries all the pros and cons of this genre of anime.

Based on a successful manga series by writer/illustrator, Paru Itagaki, the Beastars anime series, developed by Orange, was first released towards the end of 2019. The second season was released earlier this year, being aired in Japan, from January to March of this year.

The second season of Beastars picks up where the last season left off, adding more detail to certain characters, which reveals deeper – sometimes dark – truths about who they are. The anthropomorphic animals of the Beastars universe lead modern, human-like lives, going to school, working, and enjoying all manner of recreational activity.

Things aren’t as rosy as they first seem, however, as those are still animals at the end of the day. The anthropomorphic animal society, of Blasters, is divided along herbivore/carnivore lines. To integrate the two sides, carnivorous animals take medication to dull their killer instincts and are expected to eat synthetic meat.

For the most, they comply, but the medication has adverse side effects, which leads them to have violent outbursts. There is also a dark element to this society. There exists, within this world, a Black Market, where herbivores are sold to carnivores who still eat meat, and make no effort to repress their carnal instincts.

This is the reality which a teenaged grey wolf, Legoshi finds himself contending with, as he takes it upon himself to investigate the mystery behind the death of a herbivorous classmate. Legos must also come to terms with his repressed carnal instincts while trying to remain integrated into anthropomorphic animal society, and forming deeper relationships with non-carnivore friends.

One of Legos the wolf’s drama club – at school – rivals, Louis, reveals a darker, more conflicted part to his character. He is a herbivore marked for death since birth and becomes a member of one of the criminal elements which run the Black Market. This is all done in an effort, for Louis, to escape his destiny, which he eventually does, but not in the way that he initially sets out to get it done.

The killer of Tem, an Alpaca is finally revealed more than halfway through the 12 episode season. The anime series has been dropping hints as to who the killer might be, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone who isn’t might have been paying attention. Legoshi are forced to combat the carnivorous figure, and must also – in so doing – come face-to-face with a moral dilemma.

The guy – or in this case, the great wolf – even gets the girl, like Legos, after his heroic display against Tem’s killer. Legoshi, who has been thinking about dropping out of school, is forced to reconsider his position on the matter after Haru, a bunny girl, finally returns his affection towards her.

The series, after some harrowing twists and turns, comes to a happy conclusion. Mystery solves, and the object of Legoshi’ romantic efforts ts is also in the bag. What is still uncle, ar, however, is whether or not our hero takes the title of Beastars.

What is Dragon Ball Super?

Arriving 12 years after the Dragon Ball Z series was terminated, Dragon Ball Super picks the tale up from where the Majin Buu saga left off. This story features our favorite Saiyan warriors, Goku and Vegeta, taking on greater challenges than ever before. Meanwhile, unlocking the new potential within themselves.

The narrative started as a sequel to the original Dragon Ball Z series. It first saw the light of day as a manga series in the Japanese manga magazine V Jump. The animated adaptation, by Toei Animation, was also released that same year. 

The Dragon Ball narrative continues to be written by Toriyama, with Toyotarou providing illustrative artworks. The anime television series, developed under Akira Toriyama’s supervision, saw a total of 131 episodes run from 2015 to 2018. That followed up with the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie. The Broly movie was so successful that it became the highest-grossing animated film in the history of the Dragon Ball series. 

Story of Dragon Ball Super

The story is set within the 10-year gap between the Majin Buu saga of Dragon Ball Z, and the tale that follows. It is intended to be a new story arc, which alters the Dragon Ball narrative. The main protagonist, Goku, under the behest of his wife, Chichi, has taken to a life of farming. Life is, pretty much, peaceful for him and the gang, following all the trials they’ve faced.

That’s when things change. The God of destruction, Beerus, awakens from a decades-long slumber. After recalling the existence of the Super Saiyan God, he immediately goes in search of the said being.

He makes a bee-line for Earth, where he encounters Goku and Vegeta. They were beaten up by him, as they could only get up to Super Saiyan 3 level at that point. Beerus spends time on earth but is infuriated by Majin Buu, who refuses to share his pudding with the God of destruction. That prompts him to threaten to do what he does best to the plane if he is not met by a worthy foe; the legendary Super Saiyan God. 

Goku and Vegeta find the magical dragon Shenron who tells them how to become Super Saiyan Gods. Them two then go on to reach the transformation with blue hair – the legendary Super Saiyan God form.

They face Beerus, who still defeats them, but the good of destruction is so pleased with the battle that he spares the Earth. Goku and Vegeta then begin training under the God of destruction’s apprentice, Whis.

New upcoming movie

The series also sees the repeated return of the intergalactic tyrant, Frieza, as well as the appearance of new challengers. The tale culminates in a movie that features a retold origin story of the legendary rage-powered Super Saiyan, Broly. A new Dragon Ball Super movie – Super Hero is currently in the works and is set for a 2022 release. 

Closing

Apart from a little criticism from fans of the series due to some episodes being poorly animated, the series has received a lot of positive feedback. Many critics praised the explosive combat sequences featured in Dragon Ball Super and touched on the nostalgia the series evokes. 

If you were, or still are, a fan of the Dragon Ball franchise, Dragon Ball Super may make a great addition to your collection. The story promises improvements to the original tale. Hopefully, it will make up for the whole Dragon Ball GT series, which was painful to watch.

What is Akame ga Kill?

The story created by Takahiro and illustrator, Tetsuya Tashiro revolves around a young man. He, in order to escape poverty, travels to the city to join the army. Upon his arrival, he is shocked to find the city rotten with corruption. He is soon separated from the two mates he traveled with, as a result of some confusion caused by a robbery. Without money and down on his luck, he is grateful to then be taken in by a noble family.

That night he witnesses the noble family’s estate get raided by a group of assassins who call themselves Night Raid. They execute the noble family and inform the lad that the family had intended to torture and kill him, as they had done to his friends.

This probably made him easier to recruit, as Tatsumi soon joins Night Raid as a member. They’ve also informed him of their mission to overthrow a corrupt government that is behind all the pain and suffering of his nation.

The Night Raid of Akame ga Kill

This is no ordinary group of assassins, as each is equipped with a special weapon known as Imperial Arms. They are created from a unique Danger Beast of incredible power. Imperial Arms aren’t the kind of weapons one would shake a finger at. The legend has it that when two Imperial Arms wielders fight, one of them is bound to die.

The Night Raid group consists of 7 members, excluding Tatsumi, who each laid down their lives for the cause. Akame is a dark-haired swordswoman. Leone is a beastly fighter who is cat-like in skill and behavior. Mine is a genius sniper, and Sheele wields giant Scissors. Lubbock can manipulate, while Bulat wears an enchanted armor that Tatsumi inherited after Bulat’s passing.

Story progression and animation

Steele is the first member of Night Raid to die, as she lost in a battle against Seryu. Team Night Raid accomplishes many of its missions. However, the government enlists the aid of general Esdeath and her three Danger Beasts to help deal with the threat of the revolutionary force to the established order.

Bulat also takes a fall, leaving his armor in the care and charge of Tatsumi. Together with Night Raid and recruits, Tatsumi goes into battle with a group called the Jaegers. Their job is to hunt down and destroy Night Raid. Interestingly, one of the Jaeger members is the younger sister of Akame, who goes by the name Kurome. 

For its brightly colored animation style, the show is rather violent and packed with gore, which is one of the things fans probably enjoyed most about the anime. That and the fact that the show spares no character from a brutal end.

There has been talk of a second season. The studio behind the title however hasn’t revealed any information, so it remains to be seen when it may occur. There have been no announcements, only a speculative release date so far. 

Without giving too much of the show’s plot away, this is an animation that we heavily recommended. Their unique presentation of a battle for the greater good is as relevant today as it was when this anime first aired, and will likely be so for the rest of  time

That’s the most common association when it comes to anime and manga series that revolve around the lives of little girls. Gunslinger Girl is the exact negative of that. It is a title for those who are able to stomach a plot that raises serious moral questions and a bit of gore. This is not to be confused with Bubblegum Crisis.

What is Gunslinger Girl?

Produced by Madhouse Gunslinger Girl’s rather serious story is played out in Italy. It revolves around the lives of a group of little girls who were taken in by a government organization called the Social Welfare Agency. However, the “Social Welfare” aspect of things isn’t necessarily about the girls. This is a secret organization that uses high-tech medical engineering to rehabilitate vulnerable children with serious injuries which they deploy as assassins – a clandestine unit of cyborg child soldiers.

Fratellos

Their main mission is to take out the mob and separatist terrorists. Each child is attached to an adult to form teams that are referred to as “Fratellos”. As the story plays out episodically, each one tries to focus on the interactions between each girl and her handler. However, the show pays more attention to the leading character, Henrietta, and her handler Jose.

The very nature of its plot and the stark differences between each individual Fratello add to the seriousness of this series. For example, Henrietta enjoys a friendlier relationship with her handler. It resembles that of a father and his daughter, or an older brother and younger sister. On the other hand, another one of the girls who goes by the name, Rico, receives a far worse treatment from her handler. He saw her as nothing more than a tool to help him achieve the objectives the agency gives him.

The Good

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this anime series is the attention to detail. It starts with the modern Italian setting (you can even spot a Ferrari in one scene) and flows through to the realism of the well-animated gunfights. Henrietta’s FN P-90 and Rico’s Dragunov sniper rifle definitely sound as real as the real-world versions.

This attention to detail can also be seen in layers of each individual character as they are revealed. Whenever they aren’t engaged in anti-terror operations, the girls generally behave their age.

The Bad

There is a lot of things this series does right. However, there are a few areas where the creators could have done a much better job. The most damning of these is the duration and frequency of the action scenes. Even though they are fluid and gripping, the number of action scenes is low. The lack of them makes the viewer want more. It sometimes feels as though the creators were trying a little too hard to stick to the realism of it.

Another issue is the focus on the girls’ lives, it seems to play a role in robbing viewers of action while never really reaching a meaningful conclusion. To add to this, there is a sense of vagueness to how the story plays out.

The main plot of Seven Deadly Sins

As it stands, the series plays out over five seasons and there are two films.  So, there’s a lot of content for those who are interested in what has become one of the most popular anime series on Netflix. The story follows the life of Meliodas. He is the leader of a group of disavowed knights known for being framed for trying to plot a coup.

Known as The Seven Deadly Sins, our band of heroes is on a mission to liberate the kingdom of Liones from The Holy Knights. The knights are adversaries who started a rebellion and framed them in order to seize control of the kingdom of Britannia.

What are The Seven Deadly Sins?

Each one of the Deadly Sins carries a beast marking with a name that is symbolic of the crimes they were convicted of. However, they once dominated the kingdom of Brittania as the most powerful unit of the Holy Knights.

Characters and their sins

The main character Meliodas – bears the sin of wrath and is marked with a dragon.

Diane is marked by a serpent and carries its sin of envy. Then there’s Ban, who is marked by a Fox and carries the sin of greed. King carries the Grizzly’s sin of sloth while Gowther bares the goat’s sin of lust. Merlin, the most powerful mage in the kingdom, carries the Boar’s sin of gluttony. Lastly, Escanor bears Lion’s sin of pride.

Being that The Seven Deadly Sins is a series where the magic takes center stage, it should not be surprising that many of the characters in the series are in fact millennia old. Take Meliodas as an example; though he may not look the part, he has been alive for more than 3000 years.

As for the ages of the other Deadly Sins, Diane is far younger than Meliodas at 750 years. Ban has a more relatable age of 34. Gowther and King have also been alive for very long for over thousands of years. It is expected that a grand mage like Merlin will have many years behind him. That is exactly what we get here as he is also well experienced at 3000+ years old.

Closing

As noted above, The Seven Deadly Sins manga has been around for a while and as a result, has branched out to many films apart from the already numerous episodes. So it might be a good idea for viewers who are new to the series to get acquainted with it in chronological order, picking out a random episode may only result in confusion.

The main plot of Sword Art Online

The series follows the exploits of two main protagonists, Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki. Those two are trapped in a Virtual Reality-based multiplayer online role-playing game known as Sword Art Online. The game is played through an advanced headset called NerveGear. It stimulates the 5 senses, so a player experiences a game as though they are in real life.

Players log into the game only to find out that they cannot log back out. The Game Master announces that death in the game will result in death in real life as well. This causes panic. The virtual world descends into anarchy, as the game master listed no further rules. This is temporary however, a society soon develops. Players collaborate or clash with one another to achieve different ends.

Kirito, having previously been a tester for the game, opts to play alone. That is because he wished to avoid any discrimination or victimization having had previous experience with the VR title. He soon meets Asuna. They form a close relationship which leads to marriage.

They soon discover that the game master was hiding in plain sight, as the head of a guild to which Asuna belongs. Kirito finally escapes the game, but revealing and dark real-world plots which tie into in-game action.>

First Sword Art Online Movie

Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night is the first film that follows the Progressive story arc. The upcoming movie,  Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Kuraki Yūyami no Scherzo follows Asuna’s experiences with the Sword Art Online game before and after meeting Kirito.

The day that she happened to don the NerveGear, Asuna Yuuki was a third-year middle school student who’d never even touched an online game before. On November 6, 2022, the world’s first VRMMORPG, Sword Art Online, was officially launched. But the players, still euphoric over having logged in, suddenly find themselves trapped inside the game when the Game Master deprives them of any way to log out.” The premise of the movie, According to Funimation.

Upcoming movie details

The studio behind the film has offered little detail as to what one ought to expect from the new film. No announcements on international release yet either. However, we know that the title will release in Japan sometime next year.

The title of the upcoming film is a reference to volume four of the light novel manga series. That suggests the movie may cover Asuna and Kirito’s advancement through a giant metal floating castle, Aincrad.

One of the best animé series to come out of the ’90s, Cowboy Bebop – more than 20 years since it was first released – is still regarded as a groundbreaking anime television series. The series, especially the English dubbed version, is still regarded as an iconic series, and a great introduction to animé, in general.

The series follows the exploits of a crew of bounty hunters aboard a spacecraft, called the Bebop. The protagonists of this tale, Spike, Jet Black, and Faye each have a past they wish they could shake, in a series that explores loneliness and other existential issues.

The series, which saw great commercial – as well as, critical – success when it was first released in ’98 has captured the imagination for more than two decades. The cult classic recently had a live-action adaptation created by the streaming giant, Netflix. It has met with mixed responses but does speak to the anime series’ enduring appeal.

So What’s Cowboy Bebop?

Not everybody reading this post will be aware of what Cowboy Bebop is all about, so we ought to backtrack a tad and offer more information. Cowboy Bebop science fiction, western, film noir-inspired mash-up of an animé series that kind of cut its path in terms of genre.

The series first saw the light of day in 1998 and was created by an anime production studio, Sunrise. Shinichirō Watanabe was the director behind the series, while the series’ soundtrack was the creative contribution of composer Yoko Kanno.

Cowboy Bebop is set in the year 2071, in a world where humanity no longer lives on Earth, but is dispersed across the Solar System. One can imagine what a logistical nightmare law enforcement would be in that sort of reality, so the powers that reinstated the Bounty Hunter system.

Characters

The series follows the crew of a small rickety spacecraft known as the Bebop. Spike, Jet, Faye Valentine, Ed, and data dog, Ein. The team of bounty hunters each have a unique past, Spike Spiegel is a former hitman for the Red Dragon criminal organization. He has a rough history with a character named Julia.

Jet Black is a former police officer, while Faye – who joins the crew – is a con artist with amnesia. Ed is an eccentric girl with a talent for hacking, while Ein is a genetically-engineered Pembroke Welsh Corgi with human-level intelligence.

Story of Cowboy Bebop

The main story arc follows Spike’s bitter love triangle, between himself, the bombshell Julia, and ambitious gangster Vicious. However, the show allows one a glimpse into the pasts of the other characters. The circumstances behind Jet’s departure from law enforcement, Faye’s history as a young lady from the earth, cryogenically frozen to save her life. Even Ed’s weird meanderings.

The show explores several existential issues, with hunger being one of them. The series often sees the crew getting into a mishap that drains their funds, and they find themselves – quite often – having to go without essentials; food, vital ship parts, fuel.

Most of the tale’,s focus, however, is given to Spike’s former gang life. He and Julia fell in love while he was a hitman for the Red Dragon crime syndicate. Except she was the girlfriend of a former friend, Vicious. They had planned to escape the gang life to be together but Vicious found out about the affair and blackmailed Julia into killing Spike.

To get out of going through with it, she goes into hiding, while Spike fakes his death and goes into exile. Things between him and his past come to a head when he reunites with his sweetheart, and our broody protagonist finds himself making very personal decisions.

Cowboy Bebop has been successful in Japanese and Western markets, particularly the United States. It explores the concepts of existentialism, loneliness, and a past that just won’t let you go through its characters. The series has been one of the past 2 decade’s gateway series into the world of anime.

Live-Action TV Series

Announced as far back as 2017, the live-action adaptation by Netflix – released in 2021 – was criticized for not carrying the general mood of the animé effectively. Though the Netflix version of Cowboy Bebop, starring John Cho, and Mustafar Shakir kept true to the original anime, in terms of Music. The stretched episodes – for some reason – made for a more playful series.

In Closing

Cowboy Bebop is a classic, no doubt about that. Most animé fans will have a story of the first encounter with the series. Whether one familiarizes themselves with the live-action version or not, they would probably be doing themselves a great disservice by not checking out the original anime.

Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter is one of the most loved anime, while some anime fans may disagree. However, the numbers are proof of the show’s legacy. HxH boasts a total of 2.2 fans on My Anime List alone. This show follows a 12-year-old boy, Gon Freecss, who aspires to be the greatest in a world full of Hunters who capture criminals and hunt for treasures. His goal is to find his long-lost dad: who abandoned him as a child. Gon befriends others whom he travels with. They join together to take the dangerous Hunter Exam. The story explores the hardships they face and shows lots of character development as they learn what it truly means to be a Hunter.

One Piece is the longest-running shounen anime. It was first aired in 1999 and has had weekly episodes since. This show stood the test of time and has progressed with unparalleled character and world development. The story follows a boy named Luffy in a world of pirates and special Devil-Fruit powers. The king of pirates, Gol D. Roger was executed as millions witnessed him reveal that he left the greatest treasure behind: the One Piece. This statement sparked a new era in the world. The loveable Luffy is on his journey to find the treasure to become the Pirate King with his crew. They face many hardships but they grow and become stronger than ever. However, if you do intend on watching this show, be aware that there are over 1000 episodes and counting.

Full Metal Alchemist

This show is a bit different from the others on the list. It’s unique in the sense that the main characters are 2 brothers, Ed and Al Elric. In this world, there are people called Alchemists who can shape matter into different things. After losing their mother, the boys try to perform Human Transmutation to bring her back. Failing very badly, the younger brother loses his body and the older brother loses his limbs. To save his brother’s soul- he binds Al’s soul to some armor in exchange for one of his limbs.  They are in search of the Philosopher’s stone, which they believe to be the only hope of getting their bodies back.

Attack On Titan

A relatively new show in comparison to the others on this list, Attack on Titan took the western world by storm. This show has been the biggest talk in the past few years. The dark tale takes place in a world overrun by beings called titans who feed on humans. Forced to adapt, humanity was boxed in-between walls for a century. Suddenly, new titans had attacked and took a portion of the walls. Causing a state of chaos, the military forces had more work to do in order to keep humanity safe. The main character, Eren Yeager, who loses his mother during the attack joins the Survey Corps to learn more about the world. As the story progresses, many dark secrets about the titans and humans unveil.

Naruto

This title should be no surprise to anyone. Naruto is the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind when they hear the word shounen. Easily the most famous shounen anime, Naruto follows the story of Naruto Uzumaki in a world of ninjas and Jutsu. He loses both his parents during the 9-tailed fox’s attack on the Hidden Leaf. In order to save the village, Naruto’s father seals half of the 9-tailed fox away inside Naruto. This made the entire village despise him: as they blamed him for the destruction. Naruto wanted to become the Hokage (which is the title given to the leader of the village) to gain the people’s respect. He grows as a ninja along with his team as they are challenged with many hardships and villains. What makes Naruto special is the characters, each one of them has their altered view on the world and acts to bring their interpretation of peace to life.

The series, taking a very fresh approach to the old demon slayer genre, sees a pair of siblings forced into the world of demon-slaying after a demon comes calling at the family’s door. With one of their parents dying, and one of the siblings turning into a demon who retains human cognitive, and emotional capacity, they embark on a quest to find a cure. 

The Story of Demon Slayer

Set in the Taisho era of Japan’s history, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Blade of Demon Destruction) is a tale about two siblings, a brother, and a sister, who must join forces with demon slayers to find a cure for the demon curse that the younger sister finds herself afflicted with after a demon attacks the family. 

Tanjiro becomes his family’s breadwinner, following the death of his father. He returns from selling charcoal in a nearby village, to find his family has been attacked by a demon. His mother is dead, while his sister Nezuko, is left with a curse that gives her the appearance of a demon, though her emotional and cognitive faculties remain unchanged. 

Soon afterward, Tanjiro meets and is recruited by demon slayer, Giyū Tomioka. The demon slayer sends him to Sakonji Urokodaki, who is a former demon slayer who will assume the role of mentor to Tanjiro, imparting all knowledge he has on slaying demons to him. This marks the beginning of a journey to restoring his sister to human form and avenging his slain family. 

Characters of Demon Slayer

Demons, in the context of the Kimetsu no Yaiba narrative, are humans who have surrendered their humanity for great power. They feed on the fear of humans and have superhuman abilities; super strength, regenerative capabilities, as well as magical powers. Demon slayers, who under the banner of the Demon Slayer Corps have been waging a centuries-long war against demons, are simply human. 

Humans whose only special ability is a sword made from Sun Steel and doused with a poison made from wisteria flowers which enables them to kill demons. Other than that, the demon slayers are equipped with a set of breathing techniques that enable them to perform seemingly superhuman feats, like running faster or longer, leaping higher with exaggerated strength

Mugen Train

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train would be the resulting sequel. It is a movie that grossed over 500 million at the box office, making it the single most commercially successful anime film of all time. In part, due to crazed participation, It’s success can also be attributed to the timing of the release. Going public at a time when Japan was just easing up Covid-19 restrictions, fans of the flick found little else to compete with Mugen Train in terms of options at the box office at the time. 

The movie sees Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke, and Zenitsu board a train to help Kyōjurō Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, get a demon that has been making a name for itself, killing quite several demon slayers. They fall into a deep sleep as soon as they are settled onto the train. Emu then instructs four insomniac passengers to invade the dreams of the demon slayers, in exchange for sweet dreams of their own. 

The events that follow are gripping and intense, as there is a clear race against time, to get everyone back into consciousness, and deal with the demon who is out to get them. Tanjiro soon finds that it will take more than beheading this demon to put an end to it. 

In Closing

Demon slayers usually fall into the realm of fantasy, so does Demon slayer. Being set in a time when belief in such phenomena was still a big part of the human way of thinking, the story draws from its setting, but adds a very special-forces element to demon demon-slaying makes the series extra enjoyable for fans who aren’t big on magical themes.

Nobody knows for sure, but the difference between the Attack on Titan anime and manga is likely a result of creativity clashes. So without further ado, here they are.

The main protagonists are portrayed differently in the manga vs the anime series

Firstly, the anime series shows Aramin in a completely different light to the manga. The anime characterizes Armin as a fearful and submissive personality who later learns to use his intelligence as his sharpest tool. However, the manga gives him a different and more well-rounded character who doesn’t fold over too easily.

The same can be said of the anime’s portrayal of Eren. The comic gives a more holistic approach to revealing his character and shows him as someone who is driven by more than anger and the desire to eradicate Titans – a yearning for true freedom that he shares with his friend Armin.

The manga also describes Micasa in a different light. For one, she isn’t so obsessed with Eren in the manga as she is in the anime. Those who take the time to explore the manga will note that she socializes a lot more than what is depicted in the anime series.

Eren does NOT beat Annie in their epic encounter in manga

This was a very climactic moment, however, the exact sequence of events that leads to Annie coating herself in “diamond” to avoid interrogation is where things start to differ quite a bit.

In the anime series, Eren gains the upper hand and defeats Annie as they fight it out in Titan form. However, in the comic, Eren comes out second-best and needs the intervention of the Survey Corps to get her into her crystal cocoon.

There are differences in the censorship

Being such a brutal animated series, one might find it a little hard to believe that the Attack on Titan anime toned down some of the gore found in the manga. For fans of that kind of sheer brutality, it makes for a very satisfying experience.

Kenny and the Ackerman clan are given more depth in the manga

The manga goes into more detail about Kenny’s history and that of the Ackerman clan, even dropping a few hints about Micasa’s history. Kenny is also depicted more as a multifaceted character rather than a person who is simply fueled by destructive desires.

Even his history with Levi and what led to a souring of their relationship gets a more detailed description in the manga series.

Closing

Attack on Titan is not the only anime title that strays slightly from the manga series. To reconcile these differences, one should consider that time is of the essence when it comes to television, animated or not.

Release date of the Black Clover movie

We expect the movie to premiere in summer 2022. This is because the last episode aired nearly a year ago. The studio has come out and said that they stopped releasing Black Clover episodes because it caught up with the manga content; they didn’t want to release fillers. Now that the manga has progressed further, it seems like the perfect time to start airing again. Although no new information was given about the TV show: it would make sense for the show to restart airing after the movie.

Speculated plot/content (possible spoilers)

This movie adaptation of the Spade Kingdom Raid arc is much needed in the eyes of many fans. The show’s pacing was slowing down during the entire training arc. This movie will provide fans with a fast-paced adaptation of an entire arc and will lead into the series. This arc will explore the Devils even more as we discovered the secret behind Asta’s anti-magic powers in the TV show. Liebe- a new character- is already beloved. The devil’s tragic backstory tugged on many heartstrings; we can’t wait to learn more about him. We should expect to see Asta and Liebe’s friendship and bond grow deeper as they fight the Spade Kingdom Together.

However, this movie will also focus a lot more on Yuno as it was announced that he is the prince of the Spade Kingdom. We hope to learn more about Yuno’s past and his family. During this arc, the Clover kingdom will raid the Spade kingdom to rescue Yuri and William. Dante claimed they needed Yuri because he was the key to the underworld. This can mean that the Spade kingdom is trying to harness underworld powers such as devils. If they get their hands on these powers, no one will be able to stop them without help from other devils.

Closing thoughts

This movie will definitely be a hit and provide fans with fast-paced action to make up for the year-long hiatus. The stakes will be higher than ever and the Clover kingdom will be tested under great pressure against the powerful devil power-wielding Dark triad.

Plot of Jujutsu Kaisen 0

As this is an anime movie adaptation of the already existing manga series- Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High, we could take a good guess as to what will happen in the movie. Due to the movie being a prequel: it will help build a backbone to the already existing plot. We know that the plot will follow Yuta, a boy that the ghost of his dead friend possessed. The spirit of Rika possesses Yuta in order to protect him, at any cost. However angelic this may sound, the spirit takes the form of a demon and has a negative connotation surrounding it. 

The demon possessing Yuta causes havoc and he cannot control it. This leads the jujutsu sorcerers to capture him. Yuta wishes to be left alone to die because he feels responsible for the destruction that the demon possessing has caused. They are both suddenly given powerful cursed power that they were unable to control. Gojo sensei offers both of them similar opportunities to live. This is when Satoru Gojo (Gojo sensei) intervenes and offers Yuta another path. He offers him a chance to redeem himself by helping others with his powers, instead of letting them go to waste. 

Yuta then attends Jujutsu high and learns alongside other sorcerers to control his immense powers. This is when Yuta meets already known characters such as Panda, A talking panda that has 3 different personalities, Toge Inumaki, a quiet boy who uses cursed speech, and Maki Zenin, a cursed tool user. He then learns to accept what has happened and decides to use his powers to protect others. 

Connections to the ongoing plot

This prequel will provide a lot of background information on existing characters and what they had to go through. Fans will also be able to see more of Gojo’s past as he is one of the most liked characters from Jujutsu Kaisen. The character of Yuta is sort of a parallel to the character of Yuji Itadori. They both are possessed by demons of great caliber and are offered a path to learn their powers and utilize them to protect others by Gojo sensei. This movie will also give fans a lot more information about the world of jujutsu and cursed energy. 

Closing thoughts

We hope that the movie does not stray too far away from the manga content as the story in the manga gives a very good understanding of the world of cursed energy. We believe understanding the history of the characters is very important in understanding the present situation of the plot. This is why this prequel movie is very necessary in order to move on to the next part of the show.

What is Overlord about?

Overlord, another anime of the Isekai genre, follows a man who gets trapped inside an MMO game. That guy is then a complete badass that no one can defeat. I know, never seen this trope before – painful Sword Art Online flashbacks. But, don’t you worry. This anime is far better than it sounds. Its dark thematic and boldness will intrigue even those who aren’t big fans of the Isekai genre.

A regular Japanese citizen suddenly becomes powerful evil Overlord

The name of the MMO is Yggdrasil. From once a strong guild, only 4 members continued playing it. Momonga, our main character, is the guild leader. After intense 12 years of the game, it was announced that the servers will shut down. But, they didn’t. Momonga finds himself unable to use options like exit the game or general chat. Soon, he realizes what has actually happened.

What’s particularly interesting is that the man trapped inside the MMO is playing a traditional villain character. He is then met with certain lifestyle choices like whether he should start a harem. Obviously, that is entirely possible. He is the ultimate evil Overlord after all. But, he doesn’t opt for that. It simply doesn’t fit the character he is portraying which makes him intriguing.

Characters

From villagers to demons, bosses, politicians, and criminals. This show has a massive cast of main and supportive characters. Overlord himself is an amazing written character. He actually portrays a socially awkward guy who spends most of his time in an MMO. The comedic essence of the show comes from him keeping up the act while all of his subordinate demons see him as a literal god.

Did Madhouse disappoint with Overlord?

Overlords animation isn’t bad in any sense. However, the studio animating it is Madhouse. For their standards and compared to past work they did, this just simply doesn’t feel like one of their anime. Madhouse animation is known to be very fluid with stylized art, so this one was certainly a disappointment. Certain spells and some light effects at times feel out of place.

Worth the watch

With its interesting cast of characters and some quality waifu bait, this anime certainly stands out within the genre. The targeted audience of the show at some point had dreams of living in their favorite fantasy world. They managed to show the main character truthfully as a socially awkward guy, compared to Kirito from Sword Art Online. Sadly, because of the bad aftertaste the Isekai genre leaves on many anime watchers, Overlord doesn’t get enough recognition.

Castlevania’s ending

Continuing from the last season, Castlevania Season 4 has many loose ends that need to be tied up in order to give it a conclusive ending. Another thing that had many viewers concerned was whether or not they’d be able to get that right in a matter of ten episodes.

The telling of Castlevania Season 4’s story starts off a little sluggish. Featuring a reintroduction of the characters – set a few weeks after the closing events of the previous season. This leads into a season that has a very Game of Thrones esq flow to it.

Castlevania’s characters and conflicts

Apart from the Westeros-inspired scenery, the 4th season of Castlevania gives prominence to the multi-sided nature of the chaotic conflicts. Those conflicts include many sides tussling to secure the final victory. As they make their most decisive moves, their actions draw them ever closer to an action-packed finale.

In this final season, Castlevania leans heavily on some of its greatest strengths, which are the well-thought-out three-dimensional characters. This is then coupled with a good serving of character development, which adds to the depth of each of them. With the developmental arc of each of the main characters driven by one pressing question, can vampires and other beings overcome their differences to build a future for all?

Even though it’s only ten episodes, Castlevania Season 4 introduces a few new characters as well. A vampire named Varney and his accomplice, Ratko. And then there’s Greta, an entertaining addition that awakens the sleeping hero in Alucard.

The Good

Besides the character development, the fourth season of Castlevania does a great job of balancing out the character-focused episodes with the action-oriented ones – with plenty of the bloodbaths that the series has become known for.

The fight scenes radiate the king of intensity that one would expect from a vampire anime series, especially the penultimate. Generally, the studio made the fourth season a well-rounded ending. Despite that, people are not that satisfied.

The Bad

One of the downsides of Castlevania’s fourth season is how some characters’ stories end somewhat abruptly toward the latter portion of the season, making it seem rushed.

Another downer happens quite early on in season 4. In this specific episode during a flashback, the show reveals the core rationale of one of the characters. This may have deprived the series of a bit of intrigue and drama.

All in all, Castlevania’s final season gives a decent enough ending to each character’s journey – regardless of their ultimate fate. The focus on filling in every gap is also a strong point, though fans might feel that 4 seasons is far too short for a series like Castlevania.

Religion in Japan and its media

The media often uses mentions of Japanese religion and folklore as metaphors. In many famous animated feature films, series, and comics, elements are drawn from Shintoism and Buddhism play an important role in the main story.

Most audiences may recognize some of the storytelling mediums. However, other metaphors designed to connect with Japanese audiences can fly over the minds of audiences that have grown up in other cultures. You can find subtle religious hints in your favorite anime; Perhaps the protagonists visit the shrine on New Year’s Day, obtain charms or amulets, or offer incense to the deceased.

Difference between the portrayal of western and eastern religions in manga/anime

An interesting occurrence is that the majority of slice-of-life manga/anime often has elements of Shinto religion incorporated. Examples of that are a New Years’ episode where characters go to a shrine and pay respects to the local gods. However, dark and mysterious anime such as Hellsing or Neon Genesis Evangelion have plenty of Christian symbolism within them.

Western religions, particularly Christianity, are used for a sense of exoticness. Evangelion relied heavily on it because the Japanese audience wouldn’t be too familiar with certain terms such as the Dead sea scrolls. Another way Christianity is incorporated is because of the sentiment of absolute evil and absolute good. That sentiment doesn’t exist in the Japanese variations of Buddhism and Shintoism. Anime and manga do tend to make ideas thematic and religion is subjected to this process more often than anything else.

Portrayal of Church

Even the most religious places aren’t safe from evil. Corrupted Church is often perceived worse than a simple supervillain or League of Evil, because when even the holy priests turn to the dark side, what hope is there for humanity. In anime and manga, the Corrupt Church trope can be seen in many of them. Fullmetal Alchemist shows the Letoist church led by Father Cornelio. He is a pastor who uses the philosopher’s stone ring to create “miracles’ ‘ and induce Leo’s citizens to believe in a fabricated religion So that he can use them as soldiers to help him take over the Nation.

The Wall cult of Attack on Titan started as a group of zealots who worshipped the walls as a gift from god. After the fall of the wall, Maria gained rapid influence. One of the most dominant ones is the corrupt Church in the Fate series, where particularly the entire anime revolves around it. These are just one of the many examples.

Religion shown in Western Comics

A popular theory is that Superman is actually a re-written Moses. In the Superman comics, you have a story where his parents put an alien baby on a shuttle. They sent him to the land where he grew up, named Clark Kent. In the myth of Moses, his parents put him in a basket and then he became the liberator of his people. Superman, later, is named Kal-El, which is Hebrew and means “voice of God”. Superman is often portrayed as an image of Jesus as well. If you watch the trailer for the Batman vs Superman movie, there will be a picture of a superman statue with “false god” written on it, and Superman in the sky with the sun setting. He is just a shadow, giving people an angel-like or Christ image.

In addition to the mythical and sometimes even saviour image of Superman, religion, and comics are intertwined in different ways in several different titles, subtle or more obvious. For example, the superhero Thor himself is a god. If we even go beyond the characters, some comics try to address the meaning of religion, such as the popular series “Evil Men and Gods”, which compares celebrities to reincarnated ancient gods.

Catholic symbolism

Even Western comics rely on Christian symbolism, just in more of a friendlier manner than the Japanese manga. In the comics or recent Netflix series Daredevil, Matt Murdoch’s Catholic faith is part of the story. Sometimes he struggled with faith, sometimes he trusted it, but no matter what, he often appeared in the church. The most recent arc in the comic tells the entire story from Daredevil’s perspective. An interesting one from the confessional, telling the events to the priest. In this regard, the image of Catholicism often appears traditional churches, clerical costumes, and statues of saints.

A topic that has been a discussion by Batman fans is Batman’s religion. His parents’ graves have crosses on them, and he was a holder of the Holy Grail for a while. So, it is speculated that he might be Catholic. Throughout entertainment, the Knights Templars and The Holy Grail have been often covered in both eastern and western media. The Fate franchise features the Holy Grail in all of the shows and novels.

Why is Japan much more critical of the Church in comparison to the West?

It is no secret that the Church has done some shady stuff in the past. While Japanese society is extremely secularised and Christians make 1% of their population, they don’t have to fear losing sales because of the critical viewpoint of the Church. With the West, that is not the case. In the USA Christians make up 65% of the population as of 2020. It would simply be too risky to criticize it.

Within the first minutes, we are introduced to Dracula, a scientist who combines magic and technology to create a teleporting castle. Just about every episode gives another small part of world-building that makes the world of Castlevania seem like a real place that you wanna explore further. Such instances helped elevate the series from being just another horror action. Another breath of fresh air is Castlevanias villains. It is easy to sympathize and understand the villains’ motivations.

Animation in Castlevania

The show was animated by Powerhouse studio. The makers of the series planned it to be a 2D hand-drawn animation done by a Japanese animation studio. However, all of them were too busy so the project went to an American studio. Anime and artwork of Ayami Kojima for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night were influential in deciding about the animation style. Given the nature of the source material, there is an extensive amount of onscreen blood and severed limbs. Seasons 3 and 4’s animation quality is rough compared to the first two seasons. The choppiness or lack of fluidity, especially in many action sequences, seems like in-between frames were missing between keyframes.

Storytelling

Castlevanias storytelling is similar to the popular HBO show Game of Thrones. It focuses on impressive character interaction and witty banter. The big action set pieces are usually set at the end of a season. The main characters are on adventures of their own, with the major threats in the background making their way up to the surface. Along with amazing characters, the storytelling in Castlevania is extraordinary. The only bad side is a bit of iffy pacing as the show progresses.

The disappointing soundtrack to the fans of the original Castlevania games

Although Castlevanias soundtrack contains many masterpieces, the fans of the games aren’t happy. The show is very loyal to the original source material. Castlevania is largely based on Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse, which was released in 1989 (1990 in the United States) for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Some of the most popular tracks from Castlevania games, including “Bloody Tears” from Castlevania 2 and “Vampire Killer” from Castlevania, don’t make an appearance at all, even as background music.

Why are the fight scenes in Castlevania so special?

Fight scenes in Castlevania are some of the best. All the aspects feel real. When you see someone take a punch, it truly feels like that person took a punch. The physics in fights seem to be so real. Because of the range of magical creatures and their abilities, we rarely see old ones. For this reason, each fight feels novel and mysterious. Another good thing about Castlevania’s fight scenes is that we see both sides get wounded. They get tired and at last one side becomes victorious. This progression adds to the effect of realism and satisfaction when our heroes persevere.

Conclusion

Castlevania is everything we could have wanted from the adaptation of the beloved video game. It is a show that effortlessly blends the source materials lore with brilliant character work and breathtaking animation. Both the heroes and villains are fantastic And all their reasons for why there doing what there doing Feel real and organic. To top it all off, the anime is very funny.

The drawings are extremely crude, especially for Japanese manga standards. But something resonated with people. By 2012 One Punch Man had over 7.9 million hits. Later that year the comic was reillustrated by the spectacularly talented Yusuke Murata and in 2015 it was turned into a 12 episode anime. But why? How did this seemingly satire webcomic attract a talent such as Yusuke Murata and how did it get picked up by a high-profile studio called Madhouse?

Have you ever tried to recommend One Punch Man to a person who has never heard of it? It is extremely hard to convince them to watch it. It is difficult to get across how funny or daring the show can be. How is anyone meant to relate to a hero who never really struggled to achieve his goals? If there is no risk or a villain to push a hero to his limits, the show should get boring. And yet, with One Punch Man this isn’t the case.

Main Character of One Punch Man

Early on, the show establishes two rules: this is a world of superheroes and supervillains and no one comes close to Saitama’s powers. He crushes all competition with little to no effort to the point that it’s actually comical. The concept of an overpowered main character isn’t new or interesting. It is the way the show grounds Saitama that separates him from other heroes. The world doesn’t care about him or acknowledge his good deeds. The viewer is aware of Saitama’s greatness, but the people around Saitama aren’t. From that comes sympathy for the main character.

Fighting scenes

One punch man fights are different. They are not tactical or subtle in the way most battle animes are. There are little to no mind games going on throughout any fights. That is because One Punch Man isn’t about long battles. It is an explosion of intense action. The animation in fights is one of the best in the industry and they end with brutal finality. All of the characters got their unique traits and approaches to combat which keeps things feeling fresh and interesting.

Animation of One Punch Man

One of the best things about One Punch man is how it lets Studio Madhouse let loose with the animation. In particular with the action scenes. The show is chaotic with characters having insane powers which lets the animators go wild. Skys split, buildings fall, cities explode and all of it is gloriously animated. The camera angle changes a lot both in the anime and in the manga. Saitama in different situations is drawn very differently. In some, he’s a glorious superhero with big muscles, and in the other, he is drawn almost exactly like in the webcomic. It gives the show a comic feel and depicts how Saitama is feeling and what he thinks of himself in that given moment.

Conclusion

Saitama’s struggle for acceptance mirrors the one of One’s. Neither one of them ever stopped believing in themselves. This story comes from a very real place. One Punch Man aside from all of the jokes, bombastic action, and colossal fight scenes has real depth to it. Together with the amazing animation and soundtrack, it creates a staple masterpiece of the anime industry that is definitely worth watching,

The show follows the main character Shinji, a 14-year-old boy, who together with other children pilots giant robots called Evas. The main purpose of Evas is to fight the angels. Shinji and his friends work for an organization called Nerv in order to stop the third impact. Why is that important? Because the second impact wiped out half of humanity. To put it briefly, fate of the world is in the hands of 14-year-old children. The story is set in 2015 and exhibits a post-catastrophe sci-fi world with advanced technology.

Repetitiveness of Evangelion

Almost all of the episodes follow the same formula. They start either with Shinji having daddy issues or a slice of life filler. Midway an angel attacks. For a brief second the viewer is brought to believe that humans are winning. Then, something terrible happens and the Eva stops responding while Shinji’s mentor Misato is yelling out a whole lot of commands. In the end, the humans win despite all of the problems faced. A lot of the episodes also have Shinji enter an ongoing dilemma whether to continue to pilot the Eva or to simply leave and cause an apocalypse while the adults tell him that he has a choice. That choice being the doom of humanity and everyone he loves or the psychological strains that come with piloting the Eva.

A lot of questions, no answers

In the anime, the majority of the terms that are instrumental to the show are vaguely explained or not explained at all. The spear of Longinus is especially confusing: the Seele wants it, Ikari (Shinji’s dad and leader of Nerv) doesn’t, it seals away Lilith and destroys AT-fields. The premise assumes that only 14-year-old children can pilot the Evas. Why? Never touched on. The angels want Adam who comes from the white moon. Lilith comes from the black moon. What is the difference between them and the moons? Never explained. Terms often used such as angels, human instrumentality project, Seele are also not explained. These mysteries end up going nowhere: a ton of questions and no answers. Those answers are available online or you could sit through 6 movies and 20 games to get a grip on the story.

Stagnation and excessive religious symbolism

Neon Genesis Evangelion gives off a strong feeling of being stuck. It is not as hugely action-driven as similar anime in the same genre. This is often used as a critique and the show is described as boring because of it. On the contrary, it gives a realistic feel to the show. If there are robots piloted by 14-year old children killing some kind of overpowered aliens that just keep coming and you don’t know anything about either of them and are wondering when the world is gonna end, you are surely going to feel stuck.
There is a ton of symbolism in Evangelion but it cant act as a story enhancer if the story from the start isn’t that good. The weird thing about it is that the majority of it is Judeo-Christian symbolism which an average Japanese viewer won’t be able to relate to

Animation of Evangelion

It is definitely something. Likewise, with everything else in this show, the animation is a hot mess. There are some great frames with amazing battle scenes. Probably because of a lack of budget animation started deteriorating later on showcasing multiple still and silent frames creating a weird anxious scene. The more ridiculous ones are like the scene where Eva is holding a person. The frame is still for minutes with audio going over it. Books and newspapers often covered people’s mouths when speaking to cut some corners. The editing style is interesting and looks like a war sequence.

Soundtrack

The music in this show is pretty good. The opening is amazing and one of the most recognizable/”memed” anime openings of all time. However, the lyrics of the song do not match the main character at all. Some of the pieces are even blatant ripoffs from other places.

Conclusion

Evangelion certainly had the idea that meaningful ideas will outshine the messy story. It is considered a classic and whenever someone criticizes it they are told that they don’t understand the point of it. The show brings out many philosophical and meaningful questions, portrays internal struggles such as depression, fear of rejection, and a sense of self. Neon Genesis Evangelion will spark a ton of debates and discussions whenever mentioned. However, the show is a mess. The main premise of the show could have been portrayed a lot better.

The TV anime is produced by Studio Pierrot based on manga of the same name. The Director of the show is Shuhei Morita. During the surge of vampire anime, Tokyo Ghoul managed to stand out and leave a footprint in the industry choosing a less popular mythological creature. The opening of the first season (Unravel) is arguably the most popular opening of all time. Like many similar anime, Tokyo Ghoul took supernatural beings and made them look sympathetic despite their violent tendencies.

The main focus of the show was on two things: how the main character deals with his internal dilemma and his life being drastically changed practically overnight and the ongoing ‘’war’’ between ghouls and humans. The CCG is an organization designated to hunt down and kill ghouls. However, some ghouls eat already dead people, meaning not all of them are essentially bad. CCG’s denial of this part about them can be transferred into a lot of real-life situations with government organizations.

Main Critique of Tokyo Ghoul

The anime started pretty strong when the first season aired. A lot of hype surrounded the release and Tokyo Ghoul gained immense popularity. Season 2 upset a lot of people since it strayed from the manga material. It had a few plot holes and a bit of bad pacing. The third and fourth seasons were fully based on the sequel manga, Tokyo Ghoul: re. This is when Tokyo Ghoul became quite infamous. The anime rushed the whole story, cramming even 10 books (120 chapters) into 12 episodes and skipping the middle of the story. This was a disservice to the anime watchers since season 3 starts with absolutely no regard to what happened in season 2, which makes it hard for people who haven’t read the manga to follow.

Animation

Overall the animation was pretty good. At least for the part that we could see. Due to the gore nature of the anime, some TV channels censored a lot of the blood and ultimately disabled viewers to see the most interesting fight scenes. That is because the censoring was done horribly. Black blurry spots cover bloody or dismembered body parts and beams of light obscure wounds. During some battle scenes that were a bit more bloody than the rest, the colors were inverted causing the blood to appear a light shade of neon blue. The change from the original colors to the inverted ones was done drastically, making it seem distasteful.

The famous soundtrack of both Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:re

The tracks in this show are very beautifully made. The main thing I like about them is that they are longer than the majority of tracks in other anime. Because of that, one track or song was often split up so no individual song is playing for an extended amount of time. This created a nostalgic feel whenever a part of a song that played earlier in the show reappears.

Conclusion

Despite the most confusing, unexplained time-skips, I enjoyed the anime. There are a lot of interesting characters and good developments. However, as the show progressed, they left out characters quite often which can be infuriating if you started to like them. The music is amazing and the themes of ambiguous morality are prominent. There are a lot of lessons that we could take from this fantasy anime.

The Brief History

Kengan Ashura was originally a web manga series written by Yabako Sandrovic, and illustrated by Daromeon. Under Shogakukan’s publishing, the manga series went as far as 27 volumes (with one extra) from April 2012 to August 2018.

The Netflix licensed series that brought the sketches to life in July 2019 was a product of Larx Entertainment, and was produced under the directorship of Seiji Kishi.

The Story

In the business world that we know, negotiating skills usually play a key role in securing a deal. However, the Kengan Ashura world is rather different.

As the story is geared towards hand to hand combat, there aren’t many intricacies. Here businessmen hire gladiators to compete in brutal  1-on-1 fights known as “Kengan” matches. The main character, Tokita “Ashura” Ohma is one such gladiator.

He enters the world Kengan tournaments after devastating a Kengan fighter during a vicious street fight. His victory wins him the attention of Nogi group CEO, who head hunts him to fight on behalf of the corporation. Crushing his opponents fight after fight, his strength and skills as a fighter earn him a spot in the big league.

Having been invited to the Kengan annihilation tournament – hosted by the Japan’s biggest corporates, Tokita now tests himself against the best fighters for a chance to win the seat of chairman of the Kengan Associatin, while a mysterious past keeps creeping up on him.

The Good

The story focuses a lot on the fighting, so there are no sudden twists. As interesting as they can be in other contexts, the simplicity works very well for Kengan Ashura.

The fighting itself is pure, with no power ups, or energy beams. However, this is still anime, so exaggeration remains a key feature – with brilliant still shots that keep explanatory moments captivating.

The choreography the weaves together the fight scenes is magically fluid and detailed, never feeling too over or under done at any point. It emphasises what Kengan Ashura is, a martial arts themed anime.

The Bad

The first bit of bad news is for the “purists”. The creators of the Kengan Ashura anime series have opted to make use of technological advances like CGI. The truth of the matter is that they might have made very good use of it, as the flow of the visuals is very clean.

Another point that some viewers might not agree with is the character development. Though not completely void of it, some Kengan Ashura characters could have been assisted by a tad bit more of it.

The October 2020 released anime series is the latest from a multimedia project that began in 2017. Hypnosis Mic offers the viewer a unique combination of the Hip hop genre with great character design and popular talent.

The series began with a teaser clip on YouTube, that served as an introduction to the premise of the show and its 12 characters. This was later followed up with the release of CD singles and videos, plunging interested viewers deeper into its funny – and maybe a little bit sexist world. In 2020, Evil line records – with the help of Otomate and Idea Factory, have brought Hypnosis Mic to our screens for a more full filling watch.

The Story 

The story takes the effects of music on people and paints them in a hilariously literal nature. It is played out in a post conflict period under the totalitarian rule of women, where no form of weaponry is to be made or used. In this world, all differences are settled in rap battles – using Hypnosis Mics.

With these mics in hand, MCs turn their lyrical skills into direct psychic attacks against their opponents, bomb blasts, coffins, and pretty much anything that does harm to the other guy.

Interestingly, for a world controlled by women, they seem to do very little – if any – participating in the rap battles. This is interesting because the entire series revolves around these rap battles. So it is a little strange to me that those who are supposed to run the show don’t seem too “interested”. Besides, it’s not like women don’t have heated disagreements.

None-the-less, the story is both humorous and visually appealing. Moreover, it is told in such a way that it completely sidesteps any form of seriousness – which is probably a good way of limiting the number of viewers complaints regarding political correctness.

The Characters

The series follows four main rap crews – made up of three members each – that represent the different divisions. The MAD TRIGGER CREW represents Yokohama, Matenrou represents Shinjuku, Buster Bros represent Ikebukuro, and the Fling Posse represent Shibuya.

MAD TRIGGER CREW

The MAD TRIGGER CREW is made up Aohitsugi Samatoki or Mr.Hc -a bad tempered Yakuza member who used to be part of the Dirty Dawgs, Busujima Mason Rio aka Crazy M, a former soldier known for his merciless approach to conflicts, and Iruma Juto or 45 Rabbit -:a shady policeman who is deeply involved in Yakuza activities.

Matenrou

The Matenrou’s members are Izanami Hifumi aka GIGOLO, who is a bit of a ladies man, Kannonzaka Doppo or DOPPO is a pessimistic office worker with no real friends outside of the crew, and Jinguji Jakurai aka ill-DOC is a former medical doctor who seems fond of odd things and people.

Buster Bros

Yamada Ichirou or MC.B.B is a former delinquent with a strong sense of Justice, Yamada Jirou aka MC.M.B is the middle child of the Yamada family, and Yamada Saburou or MC.L.B is the youngest and best behaved of the lot.

Fling Posse

Yumeno Gentarou aka Phantom is a writer who lies very well, Arisugawa Daisu aka Dead or Alive is a gambling addict who lets a roll of the dice make decisions for him, and Amemura Ramuda or Easy R is the leader of the crew.

More specifically, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train beat out the previous record holder, Frozen 2 – which pulled in $ 16 million on its Japan debut, by taking in a bar setting $44 million dollars.

The Demon Slayer series is a creative work by Koyoharu Gotōge, with a manga series that has been published in Weekly Shōnen since 2016 under the title Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. This was followed by the release of an equally successful animated series by the same name.

What’s It All About? 

The series follows the life of the main character Tanjiro Kamado in a demon infested world, with many many aspects borrowing from culture of the Taishō period in Japanese history.

Having lost their parents to demons, Tanjiro and his sister – who also happens to be a demon – win the favor of a demon slayer named Giyū Tomioka, thus beginning Tanjiro’s journey to becoming a demon slayer. A journey not without its own twists, as Tanjiro is given a black sword – a bad omen – upon surviving initiation into the demon slayer corps.

Battling demon after demon trying to aquire the blood of the Twelve Kizuki (the demon leader’s twelve most powerful demons) to try to undo the demonization process – an idea he learned from Tamayo, an odd demon who is on the good side. Tanjiro later finds himself on the wrong side of other demon slayers and has to have the Grand Master of the demon slayers save him from execution (sorry for the spoiler).

What Can We Expect From The Movie?

Seeing as the movie adaptation of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba, dubbed Mugen Train, has only launched for the Japanese market at this point, one can only speculate on what the movie has in store for viewers.

Essentially, the Mugen Train movie should be continued right from where the end of season 1 left us. Based on the information currently available to us who aren’t in Japan, Tanjiro and his companions Zenitsu, and his sister Nezuko are tasked with helping a high ranking demon slayer, Rengoku, as he investigates anomalous reports.

It promises to be an enthralling watch as hinted by the trailer that was released in April this year. It teases about how Tanjiro and all have to the bottom of 40 strange disappearances and the deaths of several other demon slayers who met their ends investigating the same mystery.

How Much Longer Do We Have To Wait? 

As far as the western release is concerned, the best information sets point towards late 2020 to early 2021 release for the English language markets. With Aniplex America having licenced the film and GSC cinemas having hinted towards screening as early as the 5th of December, one only needs to hold on a little bit longer.

Na-Ga’s character designing and Maeda’s storytelling abilities were reunited to create this project PA works producer, Mitsuhito Tsuji, made it known that he was interested in working on a new original project to follow up after the 2010 released, Angel Beats, and 2015 released Charlotte. And the rest is history, some say.

The Story

The story follows a highschool student, Yota Narukami, who – like most children of his age – is anxiously preparing for his college entrance exam. On one fateful day – while playing baseball with a friend – what’s left of his life, and possibly the lives of everyone around him, would never be what he would have imagined of them.

Yota is approached by a young girl who introduces herself as Hina, who alights Yota to the fact that she also happens to be the omniscient god Odin. After a bit of scepticism from Yota and his friend.The boy is not immediately convinced of what he has been told and begins the journey of his most eventful summer holidays.

However, his new relationship with his omniscient god starts to put a straight on his relationship with his childhood friend. This dynamic usually plays out in comic scenarios where Hina tries to help but only makes matters worse.

As the story is opened through the first episode, there are two ideas that stream to the viewers mind after the “end of the world is in 30 days” bombshell is dropped. A person in a similar situation would be left with only two options. Try to save the world or make the most of what little time you have. If it is told well, this could be a very compelling watch.

The Good

The main name behind this project, Maeda, has already proven his ability to portray people’s emotions. This aspect of his work is just as present in this offering as it is been in previous works. The heavy emotional burden of knowing the world is going to end soon is very tangible.

The Bad

At this point in time, there isn’t a lot to go on when discussing “The Day I Became a Good” as the series is still at its beginning. However, going with the theme of the world ending in 30 days, one doesn’t imagine that  this series will run for very long.
