This year, in February, Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is in development. Its predecessor GTA 5 was released in 2013, so this title has been expected for a while. However, they announced it at the end of an update post, and thus it may have been missed by many. Here’s what it said:
“With the unprecedented longevity of GTA 5, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”
What Grand Theft Auto is about?
Grand Theft Auto is a series of action-adventure games. Its gameplay mainly revolves around shooting and driving. Players complete missions in order to progress in the story, but there is also a lot of different side activities that you can play. Nowadays, it is even possible to play it multiplayer with your friends. The game features an open world, usually focusing on a single city that has been modeled after real-life cities such as Miami or New York.
What can we expect so far?
It is way too early to give any guesses on GTA 6 since there’s zero information published. One question we can ask ourselves is: What took Rockstar so long to announce the new title in the franchise? There have been rumors in the gaming industry about a new GTA for years. More accurately, the development became an open secret two years ago.
In 2020, journalist Jason Schreier said for Kotaku that the company has been rethinking its development process. Later, for another magazine, he mentioned that a new title in making wasn’t a secret to anyone. Maybe Rockstar was trying to avoid disasters like Cyberpunk 2077. They announced it way earlier than they should have which caused an outrage whenever the game was delayed. To put the icing on the cake, Cyberpunk, when it was finally released, came with a lot of bugs and glitches. So, a later announcement makes sense.
GTA 6 has already generated a lot of hype, even with a slouchy announcement. It will be hard to manage everybody’s expectations. Today’s gaming community is certainly a lot different than it was when GTA 5 came out and hopefully the developers will take that into consideration. As for now, all we can do is wait for the trailers and the official release date.
