The game was first released for the Nintendo DSi portable gaming platform in October 2010, with a follow-up release the following year. The 2011 release of the game also featured a new Magic Mode, which sees our main protagonist, Shantae wielding extra attack power, at the expense of defensive ability though. I’m 2014, the studio released Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut. So titled because, at the time, the gaming firm had intended to release new iterations of the title as episodes of a greater narrative. 

That plan went the way of the dinosaurs, however, and instead, saw Risky’s Revenge releasing on multiple platforms in the years leading up to the Stadia release. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut saw an iOS release that very year, with a PlayStation for port happening in  2015. Nintendo Wii U players got to enjoy the game in 2016, and Xbox enthusiasts saw a port to their platform of choice last year. 

The veteran Shantae title released alongside stablemate, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Ultimate Edition on Google Stadia’s game streaming platform on the 23rd of February, this year. Meaning an new generation of gamers can spend hours trying to help Shantae save the day. 

The title’s narrative revolves around a Half-Genie heroine named Shantae. She is the appointed guardian of a territory called scuttle city. She loses her prestigious title after failing to thwart dastardly buccaneering ne’erdowell, Risky Boots, crashes a relic convention and pilfers a curious lamp. She sets out to restore her honor – Like Zuko in Avatar: Legend of The Last AirBender – by going after Risky.

Her uncle, Mimic, let’s her in on the fact that magic seals – three of ten, because its never easy – will be necessary to release the lamp’s powers. Probably figuring that she should head Risky off, Shantae set off to deal with the Barons of the Sequin Land, three treasure hunters who are currently in possession of the seals in question..

Risky dupes the Half-Genie’s allies into betraying her by handing her uncle over to her – trust greed. Upon Shantae’s return, Risky launches her trap and forces her to hand the seals over, in exchange for her uncle’s life. The title delivers hours of engaging gameplay with Shantae’s mix of abilities. 

Her main weapon is her hair, which she uses to whip enemies to oblivion. She also gains spells throughout the game, which offer the advantage of range attacks. The half genie also has the ability to morph into various animals, which allow for extra abilities. She can transform into a mermaid to swim underwater, an elephant to smash heavy objects, or clear away obstacles to new map areas. Shantae can also become a monkey to climb or scurry between walls.

The game’s 2D platform format is probably why it scored so highlg with critics. The Shantae titles  remind one of classic platform games like Castlevania, but has a lot of modern twists which make it an incredibly enjoyable title.

The mobile racing simulator was developed using Unreal Engine 4, so expect PC quality, detailed, graphics. Codemaster’s own EGO technology was also put to use in the development of the game. What resulted looks to be a crisp piece of work that really honors the automotive spirit.

The premise of the game being mastery through competition, players are given access to the best vehicles that the automotive industry has on offer. All fully customizable, with actual brand parts. These guys really did their licensing homework. 

The hyper-realistic high-end vehicle makes on offer feature iconic brands like, Ferrari, Porsche (not RUF, but Stuttgart, Porsche,) Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and many others. One can build their dream car collection, customized specifically to their tastes.

At the beginning of April, the much anticipated, AAA rated, title from Polish games developer, People Can Fly, Outriders, was made available on multiple platforms. Users of PC, Xbox, PlayStation, the Epic Games store, and streaming platforms, Steam, as well as mobile streaming platform, Google Stadia.

Players employ a arsenal mix of magic, and futuristic weapons to subdue the hostile planet and its inhabitants. To fulfill one’s quest, one must complete missions while blasting through enemies in solo mode, or in co-op mode, with up to three players.

The game’s Stadia release was the first to coincide with releases on other platforms. Titles have previously been released on Stadia a lot later than they had on other titles.  Madden NFL 21, Jedi Wars: Fallen Order, as well as Fifa 21 are some high profile titles that came to Stadia a lot later than their original release dates. Outriders’ gameplay is much like a cross between Gears of War, Anthem, and Destiny, so it won’t be completely unfamiliar with folks who have dabbled with any of those titles. Aside from that, it’s a brilliantly crafted game. The whole ‘dying earth’ narrative is getting rather clichéd though.

Developed by US-based mobile games outfit, Innersloth, the social guessing game, Among Us tooke the world by storm in 2020. Though being much older than it’s hype – it was released in 2018 – the game became the darling of 2020, it’s gameplay format somehow providing social interaction for a global population adhering to social distancing protocols. 

The Game

The game is simple enough in it’s design , in both, look and feel. It went for a simple, cartoonist look, which appealed to people in lockdown. So much so that it blew past more graphics intensive titles, PUBG, or Fortnite. Gameplay is far simpler as well, with the title’s format being similar to a whodunnit game like Mafia. 

The game splits players into two groups, “Crewmates” and “Imposters”. Crew members are tasked with doing gamified maintenance tasks on “vital equipment” across various space themed maps, while identifying Imposters, and staying alive. Imposters -, on the other hand – have to run around sabotaging maintainance work, killing crew members, and not getting caught. 

A simple enough set up that gets complicated by the fact that one cannot communicate in game, and must call an Emergency Meeting, which only Crew can call. Crew members call emergency meetings to report matters, and discuss who they suspect of being the Imposter. 

Crew members win by completing all assigned tasks, or booting out all Imposters. The other side wins by killing all crew, or doing irreparable damage to to vital equipment. Players who are killed, or booted out continue to play on, but in limited capacity.

Players who find themselves murdered, or voted out of play keep playing on in their respective roles as ghosts. Crew ghosts still continue to aid living crew member from the great beyond, by doing repairs. Dead imposters can still go around doing damage, and killing Crewmates. The only limitation is that they cannot communicate with ‘living’ players, or participate in – or call – emergency meetings. Meaning they have no way of alerting them to who the imposter is. 

The Hype 

Innersloth released AmongbUs in 2018, – as previously mentioned – but the game went passed-up for more popular, and “explosive” titles. It wasn’t until the chance occurance of  global Covid-19 pandemic lockdown regulations that the, previously unknown title took the spotlight. What appealed most to masses, about the game – perhaps – is that it may have offered a simulation of a relaxed social environment, where there are simple tasks to be done, and much time for chitchat. 

Among Us went from social guessing-game to social nework-like phenomenon on the back of social distancing induced isolation. All it took was for Twitch influencer, Sodapoppin’ streaming the game to his fans last July, for a game who’s parent company almost pulled the plug on – were it not for an outcry from a few devoted fans – to become the most popular game of 2020. 

By the end of last year, the game had become so popular that YouTube influencers, TikTok Influencers, Hollywood celebrities, as well as Politicians were streaming live footage of in-game action to viewers, who guessed along with them as to who the Imposter was. However, this new wave of innovation is not being spearheaded by the major names like Samsung, Apple or Huawei. This new wave of “Blockchain” phones see the Taiwanese Mobile phones Maverick, HTC, touting its Exodus 1 as “the world’s first Blockchain phone”. As the name Exodus suggests, this new wave of smartphone is supposed to usher in a new phase of middleman free internet, aka web3.0. Thus taking the power of personal information away from tech giants like Facebook, and giving it back to the user.

According to Phil Chen, HTC’s aptly named Decentralised Chief Officer, this is the first mobile device designed to suit this new kind of internet.

“We’re this far into the information age and there’s barely any conversation about digital property,”

“All of our private data – from credit history to search data – is handled by third parties. We don’t own or control any of it. Instead, it is just seven companies in the world that control almost all of the data. They have become more powerful than governments.” Chen told the Independent in February.

So let’s see if the Exodus 1 lives up to expectations.

The Design

The Exodus 1 is quite a chunky device, with 6-inches of Quad HD+ screen made available. Apart from the not very uncommon size of the screen, the front end of the phone is not that remarkable at all. Some might even call it outdated, especially when compared to the closest like the Galaxy S9, which have gone the route of shaving off the top and bottom bezels to an absolute minimum.

Aesthetically, the rear end of the Exodus 1 is where the phone shines. The rear case of the device is transparent, so the use can view a partially drawn map of the phones inner workings.
